The above epigram was the question of the citizens of Israel, put to John the Baptist almost 2000 years ago. The answers were not farfetched, but very hard to practice. He spoke about generosity and love, justice and fairness, freedom and truthfulness. He did not speak in ambiguity or too many words, he was straight to the point without fear or favor. I was the conflict manager/prefect in my class many years ago; probably 4th grade. The teacher also directed that I should help the pupils maintain a good and orderly atmosphere in the class room. I walked around the classroom from time to time, trying my best to tell my fellow classmates to stop making noise. I was appointed to that position based on the simple fact that I was the youngest. From time to time I would report to the teacher those who called me names because of my height and slight build. The names they called me were smalli (very small person), blacky (very dark person), isi-oti (a person with large skull) and so on. Sometimes I would cry, some other times I would retaliate with bad words and most of the times I would keep quiet and ignore the taunting. Our Collection for the Immaculate Conception was $2, Thank you for your continued generosity! Our Second Collection for The Religious Retirement Fund was $3, Thank you for your continued generosity! The following year we graduated to 5th grade and I was happy to be relieved of the duty and responsibility. Now I could be a regular student like every other person. The class was a new block, new teacher and some of my old classmates. Two weeks into the new school year one of the teachers came into our classroom as asked, Who is Gerald Nwafor? I was afraid to stand up. He raised his voice and said, Who is Gerald Nwafor? Now all eyes were on me and I slowly raised my hand to indicate that I am the one. He said that his class was very noisy, and he asked the pupils, what should we do to stop this noise?, and they said I should call you to join their class. That was how I was moved over to another class against my wish and desire, and the name-calling and taunting continued. Now I am not sure what I was doing well, because I was only 8 years old but, I find it marvelous that the teacher was humble enough to ask the young students for their suggestion, What should we do? It is a life long journey towards a deeper relationship with Christ. Our program seeks to bring children to Christ, to prepare them for the sacramental life of the church, and to help them understand our call to serve one another through social justice. It s not too late to sign up for Ongoing Faith Formation Classes 3 s, 4 s, K, and 1st Grade:, 9-10: a.m. 2nd Jr. High:, 10:15-11:30 a.m. Registration forms are available online at st-justin.org. Sacramental Preparation Program Congratulations to our 52 First Communion Candidates who celebrated their First Reconciliation last! This program is for adults who are seeking baptism, or were baptized Catholic but have not celebrated the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. This is a process marked by liturgical rites that are celebrated with the community. This process is centered on the readings and includes attending Mass. 5 MINISTRY NEWS Community Ministry Christmas Project This weekend we are distributing Christmas food and gifts to over 500 families. We are still in need of 5 pound canned hams. They can be brought to the Parish Large Hall after all morning Masses. Also if you still have gifts for children that you want to donate bring them to the Hall as well. Outreach Dinner Our next Outreach Dinner will be taking place,, January 6. It will begin at 1:30 p.m. in our Parish Small Hall. All Senior Citizen members of our Parish are invited, along with a guest, to this meal followed by BINGO. COMMUNITY MINISTRY Financial Assistance for Parishioners St. Justin Community Ministry has set aside some funds to provide Parishioners with limited Financial Assistance when facing unexpected issues. If you find yourself in need, contact Joe Bauer via at jbauer@dsj.org or at extension 109. Fresh Fruit and Vegetables needed For those of you who have back yard fruit trees with an over abundance of fruit and/or gardens with vegetables please consider donating what you can to Community Ministry. The fruit and vegetables are a welcome addition to the food that we distribute to those seeking assistance. Donations can be dropped off at the Community Ministry Pantry Monday-Saturday from p.m. Food & Diaper Collection Most of you are aware of the Community Ministry Collection Barrels that are located in our Church. During the month of December, we will continue to request canned Soup, Ravioli, Chile, Macaroni & Cheese and Tomato Sauce. We are also in need of size 5 and size 6 diapers. These are items that we do not receive often from the Second Harvest Food Bank. Please feel free to drop donations in the barrels in the Church, the barrel in the Foyer of the School or bring items to the Parish Office. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Years ago, the trick question on religion quizzes would be to name all the liturgical colors, or the colors of the vestments worn at Mass. Rose is a color seldom seen, used at most two days a year. Today, Gaudete, is one of those days. The name of the day is drawn from an opening verse in the old Latin Mass texts: Gaudete is Latin for Rejoice! This year s Gospel certainly reflects that mood as Elizabeth feels her infant within her leaping for joy at the presence of Mary. Mary s visit to her aged cousin is an act of compassion between women, as two kinswomen who are bearing children into the world share their joy. Some churches retain the custom of having the priest wear rose vestments today, and many will use a rose candle in the Advent wreath. Violet is the official color for Advent and Lent, but many parishes employ different hues for each season, trying to keep them distinct. In medieval times, dye was costly, and poor parishes used unornamented plain cloth for vestments. Dyes were expensive and some colors, particularly purple, difficult to achieve. In England, purple dye was made from mollusks, yielding at best a deep indigo or blue and not the desired violet. Thus, the color of Advent in the British Isles has long been a deep blue, reminding many people of Mary s presence at the heart of the Advent mystery. 8 Due to the support that we received from many of you, we are able to assist 430 families with their Thanksgiving Dinner. In less than a month we hope to feed those same families and more. We also want to provide them with Christmas presents for their children and grandchildren. The entire parish community is invited to help by providing the needed food items for these Christmas meals. The families requesting food are given a choice of a Ham or $10 Grocery Store Gift Card. The menu is as follows: A Ham (5 pound canned) or $10 Grocery Store Card Pork Gravy, Stuffing, Cranberry Sauce Yams, Corn, Green Beans, Fruit Cocktail Here is how you can help... Food: Please help us to collect the needed food items by bringing them to Church or the Parish Ministry Center before Thursday, December 13. Gifts: We are once again allowing the parents and grandparents of the children receiving our gifts to pick out presents, so we need the gifts to be donated unwrapped. There is a Gift tag tree located in the front entrance of the Church or you can pick up gift tags in the Parish Ministry Center during the week. We would appreciate presents begin dropped off by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, December 14. Wrapping Paper, bows, ribbon, gift tags and boxes are welcome. Packing the food and organizing the gift tables will take place beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, December 14. You are more than welcome to join the fun. A light dinner will be served.
