When Matthew has Jesus speak of the Law and the prophets he means the whole Scripture. When the Messiah brings the fullness of the kingdom none of scripture will be done away with. Instead it will be fulfilled. Matthew s Jesus does not overturn the Law of Moses, nor does he set his followers free from the Law. He requires his followers to go beyond the Law by doing more than the Law requires. The Law condemned murder. Jesus condemns anger. The Law condemned adultery. Jesus condemns even lustful looks. Matthew s community needs a way to understand the difference Jesus and the kingdom he brings. They affirmed that God had always been at work in history through the Law and the prophets. But God s work goes beyond that to be embodied by the Messiah who reveals the definitive will of God. This week take the time to make a list of rules that we are called to follow in our home in order for everyone to get along together. Think about rules for play time, rules for eating, rules for how to speak to one another, rules for going out with friends, and so on. Remember that we often follow rules as a way of showing love and respect for one another. Do we really believe that God s Law of Love can be thought of as rules that we are to follow in order to show our love and respect for one another? How do we deal with anger? How do we deal with those who break the rules? Things we all should think about. Have a good week. Fr. It is a life long journey towards a deeper relationship with Christ. Sacramental Preparation Called to His Supper: Session 1: Completed by February 12th Letters for First Communion Mass choice have been mailed. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Are you an adult seeking baptism? Or a baptized Christian seeking the full communion of the Catholic church? Or perhaps a baptized Catholic who wishes to complete initiation in the sacrament of confirmation? This program is for adults who are seeking baptism, or were baptized Catholic but have not celebrated the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. This is a process marked by liturgical rites that are celebrated with the community. This process is centered on the readings and includes attending Mass. For those who are spiritually prepared, they will receive the Sacraments of Initiation, (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) during the Easter Vigil. 5 MINISTRY NEWS COMMUNITY MINISTRY Outreach Dinner Our next Outreach dinner will be taking place next, February 19, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the Parish Small Hall. All Senior Citizen members of our Parish are invited, along with a guest, to this meal followed by BINGO. Financial Assistance for Parishioners St. Justin Community Ministry has set aside some funds to provide Parishioners with limited Financial Assistance when facing unexpected issues. If you find yourself in need, contact Joe Bauer at extension 109 or jbauer@dsj.org Food & Diaper Collection Most of you are aware of the Community Ministry Collection Barrels that are located in our Church. During the month of February, we will continue to request canned Soup, Pork & Beans, Chili, Macaroni & Cheese and Tomato Sauce. We are also in need of Baby Food (Fruits and Vegetables) as well as Baby Diapers (Size 3 5). These are items that we do not receive often from the Second Harvest Food Bank. Please feel free to drop donations in the barrels in the Church, the barrel in the Foyer of the School or bring items to the Parish Office. Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Needed For those of you who have back yard fruit trees with an over abundance of fruit and/or gardens with vegetables please consider donating what you can to Community Ministry. The fruit and vegetables are a welcome addition to the food that we distribute to those seeking assistance. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION By the early 1950s some scholars were calling for the restoration of Communion of the faithful on Good Friday, since by then only a priest received, consuming the host from the Holy Thursday repository. In 1955 the new Good Friday liturgy was timed to begin at three o clock everywhere, and included the option of Holy Communion, but without the Precious Blood that had originally been part of the liturgy. Today, there is increasing debate among theologians. Some feel that it would be better to fast from the Eucharist on Good Friday, focusing on the mystery of the cross and highlighting the Easter Communion. Others say that this Communion infuses the sadness of the day with awareness of Christ s victory. It is not a day of mourning, of course, and the Passion according to John grounds the liturgy in a sense of Christ s victory over death and the triumph of the cross. The tradition is rich and varied, and we are still in the early stages of recovering an ancient way of doing things. Why do we call the day good? The English and Dutch languages share this name, and its origin stems from the name God s Friday. The traditional name for the day in Latin is Feria VI in Parasceve, which translates as The Sixth Day of the Week of Preparation. Other languages make do with Holy Friday. In another part of England, as in Denmark, the people used to call it Long Friday, a good description for a quiet day without work and no chance for play or a good meal! Rev. Stand and be Counted Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment in all its dimensions brings you advantages, recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner makes things much easier when it is time for infant Baptism, weddings, when asked to be a Baptismal or Confirmation Sponsor and even funerals. We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and Confirmation Sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active and contributing member. By Diocese of San Jose (SAN JOSE, CA, 02/06/17) When did we see you a stranger and welcome you? - Matthew 25:38 WASHINGTON Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), and Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles, vice president of the USCCB, have issued the following joint statement regarding the recent executive order on the new refugee policy announced by President Trump this past Friday. President Trump s executive order suspends the entry of refugees into the United States for 120 days. The order also indefinitely stops the admission of Syrian refugees and for 90 days, bars individuals from seven predominantly Muslim countries. Full joint statement as follows: Over the past several days, many brother bishops have spoken out in defense of God s people. We are grateful for their witness. Now, we call upon all the Catholic faithful to join us as we unite our voices with all who speak in defense of human dignity. The bond between Christians and Muslims is founded on the unbreakable strength of charity and justice. The Second Vatican Council in Nostra Aetate urged us to sincerely work toward a mutual understanding that would promote together for the benefit of all mankind social justice and moral welfare, as well as peace and freedom. The Church will not waver in her defense of our sisters and brothers of all faiths who suffer at the hands of merciless persecutors. Message from the Office of the Bishop Temporary Liturgical Adaptations during the Flu/Cold Season 1.We will suspend offering Holy Communion under both Species. 2. Holy Communion will be distributed only into the hands of communicants; during this time, Holy Communion will not be distributed on the tongue. 3. The Sign of Peace should be adapted so as to allow for a greeting that does not involve shaking hands or touching. The refugees fleeing from ISIS and other extremists are sacrificing all they have in the name of peace and freedom. Often, they could be spared if only they surrendered to the violent vision of their tormentors. They stand firm in their faith. Many are families, no different from yours or mine, seeking safety and security for their children. Our nation should welcome them as allies in a common fight against evil. We must screen vigilantly for infiltrators who would do us harm, but we must always be equally vigilant in our welcome of friends. The Lord Jesus fled the tyranny of Herod, was falsely accused and then deserted by his friends. He had nowhere to lay His head (Lk. 9:58). Welcoming the stranger and those in flight is not one option among many in the Christian life. It is the very form of Christianity itself. Our actions must remind people of Jesus. The actions of our government must remind people of basic humanity. Where our brothers and sisters suffer rejection and abandonment we will lift our voice on their behalf. We will welcome them and receive them. They are Jesus and the Church will not turn away from Him. Our desire is not to enter the political arena, but rather to proclaim Christ alive in the world today. In the very moment a family abandons their home under threat of death, Jesus is present. And He says to each of us, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me (MT 25:40). 4. People should avoid holding hands during the recitation or singing of the Lord s Prayer. 5. A reminder that the obligation to participate in Mass does not hold for those who are seriously ill or may have flu or cold symptoms. When appropriate, we will return to our normal liturgical practices, which highly value full participation in the Eucharist through the sharing of the cup and generous signs of hospitality, Page 6 Sixth in Ordinary Time February 12, 2017
