2 Fourth Sunday of lent March 31, 2019 A Reflection The 4th Sunday of Lent By Joe Juellich This weekend we celebrate the second of the three Scrutinies. So, today s reflections are going to be based on the readings of Cycle A. The themes of today s readings are light and darkness, sight and blindness. These themes are also part of the Baptismal Rite. Throughout these readings, remember this well -known phrase There are none so blind as those who will not see. In the first reading from the first Book of Samuel, Samuel is directed by God to select the next king of Israel. He is to choose one of the sons of Jesse of Bethlehem, who had 8 sons. Of the 7 sons present, God rejected all of them. The youngest son, David, was then summoned from the fields and was selected by God. It is not by physical appearance that God judges but by what is in a person s heart Not as man sees does God see. God knew that David would be a good king because he looked into David s heart and the spirit of the Lord rushed upon David. He was then anointed with oil (Messiah means anointed one) as the next king of Israel. The Gospel reading from John is the Story of the Blind Man. Remember that the Hebrews believed that a man born with any physical impairment was either a sinner or paying for the sins of his father. Jesus makes a mud paste, spreads the paste on the blind man s eyes. What Jesus did was, according to Jewish tradition, work, which was a violation of the Sabbath Law. He then tells him to wash in the pool of Siloam (meaning one who is sent ). Note: In 2005, archaeologists found the pool of Siloam exactly where John said it was located. He washes in the water and his sight is restored. Here, as in last week s reading, water symbolizes baptism, rebirth. Through the waters of baptism, we become the light of the world. Jesus performs this miracle on the Sabbath, where any work, however miniscule, is forbidden. The Pharisees, true to form, try to depict Jesus as a sinner because He does not keep the Sabbath. The blind man remains true to Jesus by telling the Pharisees that only a man of God could have cured him. At the end he becomes a follower of Jesus. The Pharisees never do see the Light (Jesus the Messiah), because they believed in the strict interpretation of the Law and not the spirit of the Law. Were they afraid to open their hearts and see the Light? To quote the late Bishop Ken Untener Our entire life is meant to be a process of opening our eyes, widening our vision. We are called to imitate the blind man, and not the Pharisees. (Joe Juellich has been a Bible Study Facilitator for the past 19 years. 4 Faith Formation Corner For this week s Faith Formation Corner we are going to continue our reflection on how to get the most out of this Lenten season by reflecting more deeply on this Sunday s Gospel where we hear Jesus providing sight to a man born blind. The passage begins with the disciples asking who had sinned to result in the man s blindness, but Jesus responds by explaining that sin has nothing to do with the situation. Can you imagine how the disciples were feeling as Jesus explained that people s situations are not always caused by their goodness or wickedness before God? After Jesus heals the man, the man is brought before the Pharisees because the people don t know how to respond. After the Pharisees ask the man what happened they also want to ask his parents. When the parents don t help, they ask the man to return and explain again how he gained his sight. The man is frustrated because he told the truth and yet these religious leaders don t trust him. Can you recall a time when you spoke the truth and those around you were unwilling to hear it? As this passage concludes, Jesus returns to the man and reveals himself as the Son of Man. The man responds by believing in Jesus and worshipping him. During this Lenten season, is there something Jesus has been trying to reveal to you? As we continue into Lent, let us ask Jesus how to deepen our belief in him. Blessings, Daniel Sunday Children s Ministries Nursery The nursery is open for parents with children to use. The Scrutinies This Sunday during the 11:30am Mass we will have the 2 nd Scrutiny. These Rites remind us all of the need to closely examine (scrutinize) our lives and explore how we can also grow closer to Jesus through our prayer and actions. The 3 rd Scrutiny will be April 7 th at the 10:00am Mass and we hope you can join us.

Combining prayer, craft and comfort, the Prayer Shawl Ministry lovingly creates beautiful shawls and lap blankets to give to those in need of solace, comfort and a warm, sheltered feeling. Throughout their creation, shawls are crafted with prayers prayed for the recipient. Donations of yarn are welcome to help defray costs incurred by the crafters. If you know someone who would like to receive a Prayer Shawl or if you are interested in joining: contact Mary Kay Tocce at or mktocce@aol.com Ministry meetings: crafters gather one afternoon a month to work and share ideas ext 316. VILLAGE HOUSE CORNER Our guest arrive soon! Our hosting for the 15 unhoused medically-fragile women will be May 6 - June 5. And we are ready for you to help! Our SignUp page is available for volunteers, and can be found at smvillagehouse.org. We have some updates this year to the volunteer scheduling, largely based on your feedback from last year. We have moved to only 2 Overnight shifts per night (from 3 per night last year), and some of the time slots have been adjusted-- check out the website for details. We need volunteers for overnight, intake, dinners, transportation, laundry, grocery shopping, and many more. Also available on SignUp are the training/orientation classes. Check it out! You will also find the SignUp for our day center at Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church on The Alameda. Shifts are available weekdays from 7am-10am or 10am- 1pm. FOOD BOX PROGRAM Our Food Box program continues to grow, and we are grateful for your donations that support our program.
