He commands them to "stop murmuring" -- to stop limiting what they know. Only by opening themselves to be "taught by God" can they come to see who Jesus really is ("the living bread...from heaven"). Only with this deeper knowledge can they receive the greatest gift he offers -- himself, the "living bread." Sacrament of Baptism Baptismal Preparation classes are held once a month. Call the Parish Office Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) Call the Parish Office to register Ext.309 Faith Formation: Ext. 305 Catechetical instructions (1st to 8th grades) Confirmation Classes: Jesus offers us more than the visit of an angel to sustain us: he gives us his very self to eat and promises that in this bread we will find eternal life. The food he offers us is not only his very flesh but also his word of truth. Psalm 34 indicates that the life we receive by tasting this "goodness of the Lord" is not reserved for the end of our days, but is given to us right now. Already our faces are radiant and our souls sing with glory. Already we are transformed by this Bread of Life that is the person of Jesus. We have only to eat heartily and to let ourselves become what we are eating. Living Liturgy Parish Office churchoffice@stveronicassf.com

4 From the Pastor s Desk Dear Parishioners, When lovers get together for a meal, they care about the food they eat. They might be meticulous about the right food and restaurant. When families gather for dinner, we prepare food both tasty and nourishing. The school lunch programs are careful now about the food they serve. At the Thanksgiving dinner, we like no surprises: it is food defined by culture and tradition. The television food channels tell us about what food to choose and how to cook. Even I who grew up with no cooking skills whatsoever am able to pick up some simple culinary skills from my sisters and sisters-inlaw. In the midst of all kinds of foods available, it is all the more important to pay attention to what we eat. However, there is so much more to food. Years ago, I was with friends on the elevator of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Riding on the same elevator were a young man and a woman, both splendidly dressed and stunningly handsome. When the elevator arrived at the Jules Verne restaurant on the second floor, as a magnificent Parisian night view emerged over the Seine, this couple began to argue, throwing harsh words at each other. They seemed to have everything: good looks, money, fashionable clothes---and a romantic place for dinner. But they didn t have the more that was necessary. To my sadness, they split up at that very moment, and each went their individual way. They were like the rich young man in the gospel story who went away sad. The spirit we bring into the eating is essential. A meal with others is always a sacred activity because while eating we forge relationships sealed in a spirit of friendship and family. Jesus ate with the marginalized in society, demonstrating that the Kingdom Banquet will belong to those who come to it in the spirit of the beatitudes. Jesus invites us to food in the famous discourse from the 6th chapter of John s gospel. Our tendency immediately is to think of the Eucharistic bread. It is true that Eucharist is the fundamental sacrament where we feed on Jesus and grow to be his disciples and apostles. That is why going to Mass is vital for Catholics. I wonder why more people, especially the young, don t flock to Mass on weekends, where we are fed with the Eucharist in which Jesus is truly, really, and substantially present. However, going to the Eucharist always presupposes the conviction that Jesus is the bread of our life, an experience mediated by the Word of God, in which Jesus who is the Word himself will become again and again the Word -made-flesh for us, addressing our current situations and struggles. Hence the essential relationship established by Vatican II between the Sacrament of the Word and the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Jesus is the Bread of life in and through the Eucharist. Before we are comforted by the ritual of the Eucharist, our hearts and minds are to be attuned to the voice of Christ. In the Emmaus event in Luke 24 Jesus speaks the words of eternal life before he will give his life giving bread to them. At the dismissal of the Mass, thanks to the Word and Bread, enlightened and united, we shall learn to encounter the Bread of life on the highways of life. Dispirited though we may be, like Elijah in the first reading, Jesus will feed and sustain us for the journeys to our Mount Horebs, the sacred spaces and times in the midst of life, for union with the Body of Christ, the Bread of life---and the body of Christ, the family of God. Your Friend & Pastor, Father Charles Puthota (This Scripture reflection on the readings of the 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time was published by Catholic San Francisco on August 10, 2012)

5 Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary - A Holy Day of Obligation Wednesday, August 15, 2012 is a Holy Day of Obligation. Mass times will be as follows: 6:30 a.m. 8:30 a.m. 6:30 p.m. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The roots of this week s feast of the Assumption can be traced back at least to the fifth century, when it is noted in the Armenian lectionary. Celebrated in Jerusalem, the feast in honor of the Theotokos, the Mother of God, became the principal feast of Mary throughout the Christian world. The place of celebration was at the tomb of Mary in Gethsemane and was therefore known as the Dormition of Mary. In some cultures this feast is celebrated today with a resting statue of Mary, much like a wake service of modern times. The liturgy of this feast provides images of the place of your rest in Psalm 132, and reverence for the Ark of the Covenant that held the signs of the Promise. Like that Ark, Mary is for us the ark of the Savior, the one who bore the Son of God. When the doctrine of the Assumption was defined in 1950, the Gospel reading for the feast was changed to include the verses of Mary s song, the Magnificat. The scripture readings for both the vigil Mass and the Mass of the day speak to us of life after death as well as the path to be followed in order to reach it. The key to this promised immortality is found as we take to heart the words of the vigil s Gospel, Blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Growing in the Knowledge of Catholic Faith In January 2012, the Archdiocese began Forward in Faith, a two-semester program designed to enrich the doctrinal understanding and personal faith of adult Catholics. The first semester was extremely successful, enrolling more than 1,600 men and women who attended weekly sessions consisting of 40-minute on-line lectures from the faculty of Boston College, followed by 30-minute small-group discussion of the lecture. During the week of September 11, the 2nd semester will begin and there are a limited number of spots available for new students. This semester s nine evenings of faith will focus on the sacramental life of the Church. If you were not a student in the program last semester but are interested in joining for this semester, please Cindy Kilpatrick at kilpatrickc@sfarchdiocese.org, or phone her at before September 1st. If you are a returning student from last semester, you do not need to re-register. R.C.I.A. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Registration is now open to all who are interested. R.C.I.A. is a four-part journey starting with the welcoming of adult newcomers (inquirers) into the Roman Catholic Church and those Catholics who desire to receive first Eucharist and/or Confirmation. The second part of the journey leads to a transformation of mind and spirit. Guided by the Gospel and by the examples set by the church members, newcomers can find their place in the community of believers. Part three is the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation, (baptism, confirmation, and Eucharist) at Easter Vigil. "When we were baptized we joined Jesus in death so that we might walk in the newness of his life". If you, or someone you know is interested in this program, please contact Pat and Tom Lama at patlama09@yahoo.com for information and registration or call the parish office at Southern California Mission Tour A group is planning a 4-day, 3-night guided tour to the nine Southern California missions from August 28-31, The trip package includes all transportation, all meals, lodging, admission fees to the missions, service charges, gratuities and taxes.
