Sacrament of the Sick If you know of any parishioner who is ill, at home, or in the hospital, please notify the Parish Office so our Eucharistic Ministers of the Sick may bring communion or anointing can be arranged. Baptism Infant baptism is celebrated following completion of our parish Baptism Preparation Program. New and expectant parents are invited to call the Parish Office at Youth Confirmation High School Youth Confirmation is celebrated during the Easter Season. Registration occurs in the summer. Jesus Our Treasure The last two weeks we have learned about the mystery of the Kingdom. Jesus teaches us about the Kingdom of God through the parables, and how the words of God transform our life and make it fruitful. The final result is incredible: The seeds produce in thirty, sixty and a hundred fold. My ministry at St. Justin has been fruitful during the past year as your parish priest thanks to the good soil of St. Justin where many lives have prospered. I have learned a lot in ministering at St. Justin this past year. Thanks to Dorothy for her leadership. I thank Fr. George and all the staff Your example, faith, and enduring service enable me to grow and dedicate myself with you as collaborator in the field of God. Each of you in the parish can be a parable of God s patience, mercy and transforming power. The parable of the treasure today reminds us that Jesus is the only Treasure In life that can lead us to eternal joy. There are many values that I see as treasures from St. Justin: your leaderships, stewardship, community, ministries, service for the poor, devotions, Eucharistic adoration, catholic education for the young, etc. As I am going to a new assignment, my heart is united to you in Jesus, for wherever we minister, Jesus is the center of our life and mission... He is our Treasure. I like to sing the words of St. Paul: We hold a treasure, not made of gold, in earthen vessel. One treasure only, the lord the Christ, in earthen vessel. I want to thank Fr. Christopher Bransfield, new pastor of St. Justin, who makes me feel supported even only one month working with him in the vineyard of God... I wish you my best as pastor of St. Justin. I was blessed and grateful for all the good pastors whom I collaborated with before (Fr. Angelo Re, Fr. Leo Rooney, and Fr. Joe Galang). Once again I thank you all, my brothers and sisters in Christ at St. Justin. You have been journeying with me in all circumstances and helping me to live my calling as priest. You are the living parable of Jesus. May Almighty God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, bless you. Please pray for me as I pray for you so that our lives are fruitful and be a sign of God s goodness. Fr. 3 Dear Brothers and Sisters, The Bishops of California today issued a statement on the arrival of displaced persons, mostly women and children, in Southern California. I join with my brother bishops in recognizing the enormity of this humanitarian crisis and in asking for your prayers. In particular, I ask that each parish include the intentions of these immigrants in the Universal Prayer/General Intercessions at Sunday and weekday Masses. Quoting from the bishop s statement (cacatholic.org), I want to emphasize the following three points regarding these immigrants: We recognize our responsibility as a Church of compassion to come to their aid and help provide them with the practical and pastoral support they so need. These children and families have journeyed to our country, fleeing violence and destitution in Central America. Sadly, their experience in California has thus far been marked by hostility and near chaos. They are exhausted, afraid and clinging to hope. The gravity of this situation transcends politics; it is truly a humanitarian crisis that calls all of us, Catholics and others of good will, to respond with compassion and with urgent action. May God bless the efforts of all who work on behalf of these children and families, and may the Lord move the hearts of those who are able to address a humanitarian crisis with humanitarian intervention. Proceeds from the collection will be sent directly to southern dioceses that are most impacted by this humanitarian crisis. We will take up this second collection on August 2 and 3. Or a baptized Christian seeking the full communion of the Catholic church? Or perhaps a baptized Catholic who wishes to complete initiation in the sacrament of confirmation? Youth Faith Formation Ongoing Faith Formation New Registration We provide ongoing faith formation for children age 3 (by December 1) through Junior High. The 3 s 1st grade meet 9-10 a.m., and the 2nd Jr. High meet 10:15-11:30 a.m. from September April. If you are new to our program, you may contact the Front Office (408) , ext. 0 and we will send you a registration packet or you may download one from our website. Ongoing Faith Formation Returning Registration If your child attended faith formation last year, you will receive a packet in August, which will include a database printout for you to sign and return, a calendar, and an invoice for fees. Sacramental Preparation Program We prepare second graders and older for the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist. They must have been enrolled in either Catholic School or our ongoing faith formation program the previous year. Please call the parish office (408) ext. 0 to make a registration appointment. High School Confirmation Registration If you are a high school student interested in participating in our High School Confirmation Process, please call our Front Office, (408) , ext. 0 and schedule a registration appointment. Baptism of School-Age Children If your child is seven years or older and unbaptized, we provide the Rite of Christian Initiation adapted for children. Please call the parish office (408) ext. 0 to make a registration appointment. In Search of Catechists & Aides Our catechetical programs could not function without the dedication of many catechist volunteers. We are looking for both adults and youth who feel called to this very important ministry. We will arrange your training and provide all materials. Our needs at this time are the following: Junior High team members (Sundays, 10:15-11:30am) 5th grade co-catechist (Sundays, 10:15-11:30am) High School Confirmation Team Members (Sundays, 5-6:30 p.m.) Call the Front Office, (408) , if God is calling you today. Vacation Bible Camp August 4 - August 8 9 a.m. - noon Join the fun, as our children learn about Jesus and the Bible while making fun crafts, playing wild games, learning how to live as Christians, while forming community! 5 MINISTRY NEWS Bishop McGrath will install Fr. Christopher Bransfield as the Pastor of St. Justin Parish Community on Saturday, August 9 at the 5:00 p.m. Mass. A reception will follow in the Large Hall. All are welcome. Outreach Dinner There will be an Outreach Dinner today, Sunday, July 27, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in our Parish Small Hall. All Senior Citizen members of our Parish are invited, along with a guest, to the meal followed by BINGO. Community Ministry Volunteers Needed!!! We are searching for a few adult volunteers who would be able to work in our Food Pantry on Saturdays, from 9 12 p.m. It could be every week or occasionally. If you are interested, contact Joe Bauer at ext. 109 or joeb@stjustin.org Community Ministry Food Collection Most of you are aware of the Community Ministry Collection Barrels that are located in our Church. During the month of July, we will continue to request Canned Soup, Pork & Beans, Chile, Macaroni & Cheese, Tomato Sauce and Canned Tuna. These are items that we do not receive often from the Second Harvest Food Bank. Please feel free to drop donations in the barrels in the Church, in the Foyer of the School or bring items to the Parish Office. Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Needed For those of you who have back yard fruit trees with an over abundance of fruit and/or gardens with vegetables please consider donating what you can to Community Ministry. The fruit and vegetables are a welcome addition to the food that we distribute to those seeking assistance. Bible Study with Fr. Chris & Fr. Peter every Friday, 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the Parish Ministry Center. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION By the dawn of the fourteenth century, the sacrament of confirmation was ripe for a rescue, since vast numbers of the faithful never received it, and when it was celebrated, it was done so in isolation from baptism and Eucharist. A bishop named William Durandus set out to reclaim this liturgy, but he had a creative touch and added some things into the mix that had never been thought of before. One was a slap. Oddly, he replaced the kiss of peace at the end of confirmation with a slap on the cheek that endured to modern times. This wake-up call was related in his imagination to a custom in the military, wherein ceremonies of knighthood and investiture involved a symbolic wound as a sign of willingness to suffer. Within every congregation today there are people who have memories of fretting through their confirmation liturgies, anxious to know how enthusiastic a slap the bishop would bestow. Durandus loved symbolism and had a reason for every ritual and practice, but his creative spin on the celebration shows how sadly adrift confirmation was from its anchorage in baptism, how far off-course from its home port of the eucharistic community.
