Marriage Couples registered within the parish are required to make arrangements at least six months prior to the date of marriage by calling and must complete a Marriage Preparation Program. Sacrament of the Sick If you know of any parishioner who is ill, at home, or in the hospital, please notify the Parish Office so our Eucharistic Ministers of the Sick may bring communion or anointing can be arranged. Baptism Infant baptism is celebrated following completion of our parish Baptism Preparation Program. New and expectant parents are invited to call the Parish Office at Youth Confirmation High School Youth Confirmation is celebrated during the Easter Season. Registration occurs in the summer Homestead Road, Santa Clara, CA (408) ~ Congratulation Class of 2015 As we are approaching the end of the school year, we are busily preparing for 8 th grade graduation on June 5 th. It is an exciting time as our 8 th graders say final goodbyes to their teachers, classmates, and little buddies (kindergarteners). The class of 2015 is a delightful group of individuals, many of whom have been at St. Justin School since kindergarten, and a few who joined during the last few years. Last week we celebrated the class of 2015 with an all-school rally where each class sang a song or shouted a cheer expressing their love for the class. The rally concluded with the kindergarten buddies telling why they love their 8 th grade buddy. It was touching to hear the kindergartener s heartfelt thoughts: I love my buddy because he/she is loving, kind, funny, and beautiful. I have to agree, the class of 2015 has been, and no doubt will be, outstanding examples of the St. Justin School motto Living our Faith. The class of 2015 also demonstrated high achievement in academics! More than half the class maintained at least a 3.5 GPA. Of those who applied to our Catholic High Schools, 100% of them were accepted. In addition, 25% of those were admitted with honors. Several are testing now into advanced math, science, and language arts classes many have already received notice of their success. So it is with joy and sadness that we say goodbye to these amazing young people. We are filled with joy, as we are confident they are well prepared for the future, and yet we are sad to say goodbye to these unique and talented individuals. The philosophy of St. Justin School is to educate the whole child in a Christcentered environment that fosters spiritual growth, lifelong learning, and service to the local and global community. These students are a success story. They truly are faith-filled individuals who are responsible and socially just citizens and we will miss them! If you have any questions about our programs, contact Tracy Sevigny at Youth Faith Formation FAITH Beyond 2000 Our diocesan-sponsored Morning Early Childhood Program, 9-10am, s, PreK3-1st We offer an Early Childhood Program during the 9 a.m. Mass, from Fall until end of April. Grouped by age, three year olds through 1st graders experience an age-appropriate faith experience. Registration packets are available on our website or in the Parish Office. Ongoing Faith Formation, 10:15-11:30am, s, 2nd-Jr. High Continue to fulfill the promises you made at your child s baptism. Mature faith is a product of ongoing formation. Our program supports your efforts to assist your child in forming a lifelong relationship with Jesus. Registration packets are available on our website or in the Parish Office. Sacramental Preparation Program Our program prerequisite is enrollment in either Catholic School or our ongoing Faith Formation Sessions on mornings, for an entire year prior to preparation for the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist. Preparations are parent-led at home and family-oriented parish events. Enroll your child in our Ongoing Faith Formation this Fall for Communion, May High School Confirmation Program We use Ascension Press Chosen program to prepare St. Justin Parish youth for the sacrament of Confirmation. The candidate sessions take place on s, 5-6:30 p.m. Preparation will begin in the Fall with Confirmation taking place Spring In Search of Catechists & Aides Our catechetical programs could not function without the dedication of many catechist volunteers. We are looking for both adults and youth who feel called to this very important ministry. We will arrange your training and provide all materials. THANKSGIVING The word thanksgiving most often calls to our mind the holiday in November. But as early as the middle of the second century Justin Martyr referred to the blessed bread and wine of the Lord s Supper as food we call thanksgiving (in Greek eucharistia). The Thanksgiving we celebrate in the autumn is at times marked by a sort of proud societal self congratulation and the consumption of food until we sink into an inert stupor. The thanksgiving that we call our Eucharist is just the opposite: we are led to it by an acknowledgment of our own failings; we remember our humble place in the scheme of things by giving praise to God alone. While the food of Christ s body and blood fills our spiritual hungers, it also creates in us a greater hunger. We are not sent to our spiritual sofas to let the Lord s Supper settle; we are sent to be living signs of that thanksgiving for the world by looking out for the poor and powerless, feeding the hungry, caring for the sick, speaking out against the self righteous. 5 MINISTRY NEWS Financial Assistance for Parishioners St. Justin Community Ministry has set aside some funds to provide Parishioners with limited Financial Assistance when facing unexpected issues. If you find yourself in need, contact Joe Bauer at Ex 109 or Outreach Dinner Thank you to our St. Justin School Fifth Grade Class who sponsored last week s Outreach Dinner. Our next Outreach Dinner will be taking place on, June 28 beginning at 1:30 p.m. in our Parish Small Hall. All Senior Citizen members of our Parish are invited, along with a guest, to this meal followed by BINGO. Community Ministry Food Collection Most of you are aware of the Community Ministry Collection Barrels that are located in our Church. During the month of June, we will continue to request canned Soup, Pork & Beans, Chili, Macaroni & Cheese and Tomato Sauce. We are also in need of Baby Food, especially Vegetables, Fruits and Cereals. These are items that we do not receive often from the Second Harvest Food Bank. Please feel free to drop donations in the barrels in the Church, the barrel in the Foyer of the School or bring items to the Parish Office. Fresh Fruit and Vegetables needed For those of you who have back yard fruit trees with an over abundance of fruit and/or gardens with vegetables please consider donating what you can to Community Ministry. The fruit and vegetables are a welcome addition to the food that we distribute to those seeking assistance. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It has been said that the Church breathes with two lungs, East and West. Some of our family treasures are in the East, and it is interesting to consider how liturgical families developed around differing customs. Centuries before Christ, after the young girl was given to her husband by her father, the spouses were crowned. Christians retained that custom, keeping the wedding in the home, and sometimes inviting a visiting priest or bishop to put the crowns on their heads. By the fourth century, the crowns were seen not as royal crowns, but as the crowns of victory worn by martyrs. The crowns have nothing to do with being king and queen for a day, but rather speak of the sacrifice of love poured out fully. There are no vows exchanged at all, but the crowning is followed by a joyful dance by the priest and couple around the Gospel book.
