The reading for this feast is taken from the Gospel of Matthew. The Transfiguration occurs after Peter confesses his belief that Jesus is the Messiah and after Jesus predicts his own Passion. Jesus then takes three of his disciples Peter, James, and John to a high mountain. While they are there, Elijah and Moses appear and converse with Jesus. Elijah and Moses are both significant figures. Moses led the Israelites out of slavery and received the Ten Commandments. Moses represents the Law. Elijah is one of the most important prophets, and some believed that Elijah s return would signal the coming of the Messiah. The appearance of these two figures indicate Jesus continuity with the Law and the prophets and reveal that Jesus is the fulfillment of all that was promised. In each of the reports of the Transfiguration, Jesus instructed the disciples to keep secret what they had seen until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead. Until they witnessed Jesus Passion and Death, the disciples could not possibly understand what he meant by being raised from the dead. We have the benefit of hindsight. In our hearing of the Transfiguration, we see an anticipation of Jesus Resurrection and the promise of our own resurrection. We all have special moments that we remember and share. In sharing these stories, the meaning and importance of the events develops and deepens over time. This is how it was with the disciples remembrance of Jesus Transfiguration. The full significance of what they had seen and experienced could only be understood after Jesus Death and Resurrection. As Peter, James, and John reflected on the event and told other believers about the Transfiguration, their own faith deepened. Because Matthew, Mark, and Luke recorded the account of the Transfiguration in their writings, we too can deepen our faith in Jesus, the Son of God and our Savior and do our best to listen to him. If you have any questions about our programs, contact Mary Kane at (408) ext. 104 GENERAL INFORMATION Faith Formation is more than just religious education. It is a life long journey towards a deeper relationship with Christ. Ongoing Faith Formation Program Classes will begin October 1st These classes meet on s, Pre-K3 through 1st Grade: 9-10 a.m. 2nd Grade through 8th Grade:10:15-11:30 a.m. High School Confirmation Session will begin September 24th This program begins in September and culminates with the Sacrament of Confirmation in May. The candidate sessions take place on s, 5:30-7:00 p.m. Registration begins August 1st. Sacramental Preparation You may register for this program if your child has already completed one year of Ongoing Faith Formation or is enrolled in a Catholic school. This program is for baptized children in 2nd grade and higher. Parent-Child interviews will begin in August. CLOW (Children s Liturgy of the Word) During the 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Masses, children are dismissed to the Parish Ministry Center Chapel for an age appropriate Liturgy of the Word. The children return to church during the Presentation of the Gifts. Jr. High Catechists Needed There is no better gift than that of passing on the faith to our children. We are looking for teachers/catechist for our Faith Formation program. No experience necessary, just a willing heart to share our faith with our children. If you feel called to this ministry, please contact Mary Kane at mykane@dsj.org (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Are you an adult seeking baptism? Or were you baptized Catholic as a child but have not celebrated the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist? This program is a process of spiritual and education formation through a conversion of mind and heart. It is marked by liturgical rites that are celebrated with the parish community. It is open to all who genuinely seek, by God s grace to live their lives in the Catholic Christian faith. Baptism of School-Age Children If your child is seven years or older and unbaptized, we provide the Rite of Christian Initiation adapted for children. 5 MINISTRY NEWS COMMUNITY MINISTRY Community Ministry Holiday Help As you know, each year Community Ministry helps families at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter with food and gifts at Christmas. We are searching for an individual or individuals who would be interested in helping with the coordination of these special projects. It does get to be a bit time consuming as we get closer to the holidays so we are searching for people who do have some extra time and desire to become involved. If you are interested or want more information contact Joe Bauer at ext. 109 or jbauer@dsj.org. Outreach Dinner Our next Outreach Dinner will be taking place on, August 20, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in our Parish Small Hall. All Senior Citizen members of our Parish are invited, along with a guest, to this meal followed by BINGO. Financial Assistance for Parishioners St. Justin Community Ministry has set aside some funds to provide Parishioners with limited Financial Assistance when facing unexpected issues. If you find yourself in need, contact Joe Bauer at extension 109 or jbauer@dsj.org Food & Diaper Collection Most of you are aware of the Community Ministry Collection Barrels that are located in our Church. During the month of August, we will continue to request canned Soup, Pork & Beans, Chili, Macaroni & Cheese and Tomato Sauce. We are also in need of Baby Diapers (Size 3-5). These are items that we do not receive often from the Second Harvest Food Bank. Please feel free to drop donations in the barrels in the Church, the barrel in the Foyer of the School or bring items to the Parish Office. Fresh Fruit and Vegetables needed For those of you who have back yard fruit trees with an over abundance of fruit and/or gardens with vegetables please consider donating what you can to Community Ministry. The fruit and vegetables are a welcome addition to the food that we distribute to those seeking assistance. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As the Latin Mass evolved in the first six centuries, the central prayer, what the Greeks called the anaphora and what we call today the Eucharistic Prayer, became fairly standard almost everywhere in the West. What we now know as Eucharistic Prayer I, or the Roman Canon, took a complex shape, not at all like the fluid and spontaneous prayers of early Rome, but a real architectural construction. The city of Rome was in a terrible condition by that time, and a series of political upheavals, plagues, and invasions swept through. Not much of Rome s former glory was left standing, except for the pope, who became a symbol of protection and hope for the troubled people. The structures of law and administration were swept away in the chaos, and the pope gradually assumed authority to restore and maintain order. Soon, the public liturgy of Rome became the city s only glory. The Romans wanted good order not only in their civic life, but in their liturgy. One prayer, increasingly enriched by music (although when the music tried to overtake the prayer the pope banned musical instruments entirely) was the new rule of the day. That one prayer, the Roman Canon, was solidly in place when the first liturgical book we have, the Leonine Sacramentary of 540, was compiled. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Have you ever wondered who does the flowers for the Church? Have you wished to learn how to arrange flowers? We have an opportunity for you to be trained to help the Flower Committee. The Flower committee arranges flowers for the Church every week. You can volunteer to be on the committee, and be paired and trained for flower arrangements, so you can become an independent flower arranger. We need more volunteers! Usually we do flower arrangements on Friday afternoons or Saturday mornings. We set up a schedule about every 6 months, and you volunteer for a good day for your schedule. St. Justin s pays for the flowers, and you pick them up at Fuji s or Mt. Eden and then arrange them. All of this will be covered in training.
