We are making our final preparations for 8th grade graduation on June 1st. It is an exciting time as our 8th grade students say their final goodbyes to their teachers, classmates, and little buddies (kindergarteners). Most of the class of 2018 have been at St. Justin School for nine years (since kindergarten). For seventeen families, this is their last child at St. Justin, so we are saying good-bye to them as well. The class of 2018 are graduating as high academic achievers. Nine-seven percent of the class are moving on to Catholic high school. Upon graduation the class tested, on average, at the 10 th grade level in reading, and the 12 th grade level in math on STAR testing. Several students will be entering into honors courses in Math, English and Science, as well as Spanish 2. We are very proud of their hard work and determination! Last week we celebrated the class of 2018 with an all-school rally where each class sang a song or shouted a cheer expressing their love and best wishes for the class. The rally concluded with the kindergarten buddies telling why they love their 8th grade buddy and a resounding Mexican Hat dance together. It was touching to hear the kindergartener s heartfelt thoughts: I love my buddy because he/she is loving, kind, funny, and handsome. It is a touching tribute and a reminder to our 8 th graders that they have made an impact on the lives of their kindergarten buddies! So it is with joy and sadness that we say goodbye to these amazing young people. We are filled with joy, as we are confident they are well prepared for the future, and yet we are sad to say goodbye to them. These students are a success story. They truly are faith-filled individuals who are responsible and socially just citizens and we will miss them! Food & Diaper Collection Most of you are aware of the Community Ministry Collection Barrels that are located in our Church. During the month of June, we will continue to request canned Soup, Pork & Beans, Chili, Macaroni & Cheese and Tomato Sauce. We are also in need of Baby Diapers (Size 4 5). These are items that we do not receive often from the Second Harvest Food Bank. Please feel free to drop donations in the barrels in the Church, the barrel in the Foyer of the School or bring items to the Parish Office. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The origins of today's solemnity lie in thirteenth-century Belgium. In those days, people seldom received Holy Communion, and never from the chalice. A nun in a troubled convent, Juliana of Liège, devoted her life to stirring up love for the Eucharist, lobbying for a feast day to honor the Blessed Sacrament with Masses and processions. Juliana may have been inspired by the Ascension Day processions in nearby Bruges. Crusaders brought a treasure home to Bruges from Constantinople in 1204: a reliquary said to contain a cloth from Joseph of Arimathea with which he had helped prepare the body of Jesus for burial. The stain on the cloth was said to be the holy blood itself, and so the people of Bruges built a great basilica to house the relic. Bruges became a great center of pilgrimage because of this treasure, and the procession of the Holy Blood is still one of the greatest festivals in Belgium today. The bishop carries the relic through the narrow streets, and the people wear medieval costumes and act out scenes from the Bible. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. 6 FAITH Beyond 2000 Part I A dynamic formation program for catechists and others interested in gaining a better understanding of their faith. The Chancery 1150 N. First Street San Jose, CA Mondays, 6:45 p.m.-9:00 p.m. June 25: Prayer & Spirituality I Plan now to attend FAITH beyond 2000 and give your ministry and your spirituality a boost! STAND AND BE COUNTED Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment in all its dimensions brings you advantages, recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner makes things much easier when it is time for infant Baptism, weddings, when asked to be a Baptismal or Confirmation Sponsor and even funerals. We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and Confirmation Sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active and contributing member. So, are you a registered parishioner? If not, please consider registering. Registration forms are available in the Parish Ministry Center or online at Page 6 The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ June 3, 2018
