Marriage Couples registered within the parish are required to make arrangements at least six months prior to the date of marriage by calling and must complete a Marriage Preparation Program. Sacrament of the Sick If you know of any parishioner who is ill, at home, or in the hospital, please notify the Parish Office so our Eucharistic Ministers of the Sick may bring communion or anointing can be arranged. Baptism Infant baptism is celebrated following completion of our parish Baptism Preparation Program. New and expectant parents are invited to call the Parish Office at Youth Confirmation High School Youth Confirmation is celebrated during the Easter Season. Registration occurs in the summer. We receive numerous invitations every day. Many of us receive dozens of s inviting us to buy or become part of unheard of things that promise to make our lives much better, almost immediately. It can be easy for us to believe that if we accepted some of these invitations, life will be better for us. We may have tried and found temporary satisfaction, but then a letdown and even deeper dissatisfaction. What works? How can we attain the peace and satisfaction we crave? Becoming one with God is the only thing that will do it! We need to screen our invitations and accept the ones that can lead us to that unity. Jesus message in the parable cautions against having exclusive beliefs about the kingdom of heaven. The parable also teaches about humility. Those who assume that they are the invited guests may find that they have refused the invitation, and so others are invited in their place. To accept the invitation is also to accept its obligations. Today s Gospel reminds us that God invites all of us to his kingdom. How do we respond to this invitation? In theological terms, God has granted us free will to accept or reject salvation. The parable of the wedding feast reminds us that God desires our wholehearted acceptance of his invitation to salvation. To accept the invitation is also to accept its obligations. God wants our full conversion in complete acceptance of his mercy. We need to see how wonderfully things can turn out when we decide to accept God s invitation. How wonderful our lives can be when we invite God to draw nearer to us, realizing that God wants very much to be part of our lives and part of our families. Contrary to popular belief, it is not to be primarily directed at children. And the ministry to children is intended as a means to support the Catholic Christian parents. WHAT: Over 50 different workshops that connect with prayer and calls forth an action for justice. Workshops will be offered in English, Spanish and Vietnamese. The conference will address questions such as: Where do I find hope? What does the Catholic Church teach? What are the best practices for ministry in a parish or parish school? How can I open wide the door of my heart to Christ? WHO: All of those interested in enriching their faith are welcome! In the past years over 2,000 attendees from all over Northern California attended. If you're a parish minister, catechetical leader, catechist, teacher, Fr. Joseph Geary Council of the Knights of Columbus of St. Justin and St. Martin parishes will be conducting its annual fund raising drive to benefit people with intellectual disabilities the weekend of Oct. 25th - 26th. Council members and family members will be asking for donations after the weekend Masses outside the church. Members will also be outside the Safeway store across the street from St. Justin on Friday, Oct. 17th and at the new Sprouts store at El Camino & Scott on Saturday & Sunday, Oct. 18th & 19th. The funds are raised for the Special Olympics and Parents Helping Parents organization who both help individuals with disabilities. Any contributions you can make will be greatly appreciated. At this time we have need of additional catechetical support in the following areas: 1. 6th Grade Aide 2. Infant Baptism Team Members: a new ministry for the parents baptizing their children here at St. Justin Parish. If you have any questions about our programs, contact Tracy Sevigny at Youth Faith Formation General Information Our Early Childhood Education Program (ages three through First Grade) meets Sunday, 9-10 a.m., while our Elementary Program (2 nd grade through Junior High) meets Sunday, 10:15-11:30 a.m. Did You Know We Have a Program for Your 3-year old? We offer an Early Childhood Program during the 9 a.m. Mass, from Fall until April. Our Three-year Old class still has plenty of room. Feel free to drop by ANY Sunday to see if it might be a good fit for your child. You may obtain registration forms in room 2 or download them from our parish website. Registration for Sunday Ongoing Faith Formation If you are new to Catechetical Ministry, please download a registration packet from our website or complete one in room 2 on Sunday. 5 MINISTRY NEWS Community Ministry Anniversary Dinner-Auction Thank you to all who attended last week s Anniversary Dinner Auction. We gathered and celebrated the 63rd year of our wonderful parish community. As you know the proceeds will support our own Community Ministry and will certainly help as we begin planning for the upcoming holiday season. Outreach Dinner Our Outreach Dinner will be taking place today, Sunday, October 12, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in our Parish Small Hall. All Senior Citizen members of our Parish are invited, along with a guest, to this meal followed by BINGO. Baby Food Needed Community Ministry is in need of Baby Food, especially Cereals and Fruits. Donations can be dropped off in the barrels located in the Church or Foyer of the School or brought to the Parish Office. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The confessional is a familiar setting in literature and drama. Everyone from Doestoevsky and Shakespeare down the line to Seinfeld has used the sacrament to tragic or comic effect or to reveal aspects of character otherwise hidden. All of this theater, from world classics to slapstick, has had a numbing effect on our own expectations, and has skewed how the culture looks at us and our struggle with sin and forgiveness, hope and healing. Yet the artists are on to something. The reconciliation chapel is a place where hearts are laid bare, where honesty is the watchword, and people confess their deepest needs. It is also a place of rebirth, or at least realignment. It is, like the baptismal font, a place where something dies, and where something else is born. Today, although literature has barely caught up, the place is usually not the dark and gloomy cabinet of old; rather it is a chapel that speaks of peace, serenity, and the comfort of a welcome home. People in one parish were astonished recently to see their children skipping with delight as they left the place of their first confession. We have to wait a bit for world literature to catch up with this reality, but at least we can experience the joy of penance, the thrill of a new beginning, the assurance of God s love. Rev.
