On behalf of the staff I want to wish you and your family a glorious and joyous Easter. May we all experience the joy of Easter and share it. May we all believe in the resurrection and live it. May the peace of the Risen Christ be with us so we may become the visible expressions of that peace. I hope our visitors and guests this Easter come back to celebrate with us again and again. Remember that we are a better church in your presence and a lesser Church in your absence. On this Easter let us all pray that we may allow the power of the Lord s resurrection to impel us to chose to love...again and again and again. May the Risen Christ be alive in us and may our parish community always be a visible presence of our Lord and Savior. This Easter let us rededicate ourselves to our baptismal promises of being good and faithful disciples. Let us dispense from all the excuses as to why we don t have the time, or the ability, or the know-how. Let our actions and words proclaim the Good News symbolized by the empty tomb. It is a life long journey towards a deeper relationship with Christ. HAPPY EASTER! No sessions this! See you next week! Ongoing Faith Formation Program These classes meet on s, Pre-K3 through 1st Grade: 9-10 a.m. 2nd Grade through 8th Grade:10:15-11:30 a.m. As our Elect and Candidates celebrate the Easter Sacraments this weekend, some of you may be reflecting on your own faith journey. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about the Roman Catholic faith, please contact Mary Kane at mykane@dsj.org High School Confirmation This program begins in September and culminates with the Sacrament of Confirmation in May. The candidate sessions take place on s, 5:30-7:00 p.m. Sacramental Preparation You may register for this program if your child has already completed one year of Ongoing Faith Formation with consistent attendance or was enrolled in a Catholic school. This program is for baptized children in 2nd grade and higher. RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Are you an adult seeking baptism? Or were you baptized Catholic as a child but have not celebrated the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist? This program offers the opportunity to meet in a small group setting to learn more about our faith and prepare for the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist during Easter. CLOW (Children s Liturgy of the Word) During the 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Masses, children are dismissed to the Parish Ministry Center Chapel for an age appropriate Liturgy of the Word. The children return to church during the Presentation of the Gifts. Do you feel God s call to share your faith with others? Have you thought about becoming a catechist for our Children s Liturgy of the Word on mornings? A catechist is a person of faith who responds to that call, and passes on the traditions and teachings of our Church to others. Our Children s Liturgy of the Word allows our children to be in a focused environment that opens their hearts and minds to hear and to respond to God s Word in an age appropriate manner. 5 MINISTRY NEWS COMMUNITY MINISTRY Holy Thursday Collection for Community Ministry Thank you to all who gave so generously to the collection taken on Holy Thursday to support our own Community Ministry. Easter Food Project Last weekend we packed Easter Food and Children s Easter Baskets for all the Santa Clara families who requested our assistance. Thank you to all of you who helped brighten the lives of many families this Easter. Outreach Dinner Our next Outreach Dinner will be taking place after Easter, on, April 23, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in our Parish Small Hall. All Senior Citizen members of our Parish are invited, along with a guest, to this meals followed by BINGO. Financial Assistance for Parishioners St. Justin Community Ministry has set aside some funds to provide Parishioners with limited Financial Assistance when facing unexpected issues. If you find yourself in need, contact Joe Bauer at extension 109 or jbauer@dsj.org Food & Diaper Collection Most of you are aware of the Community Ministry Collection Barrels that are located in our Church. During the month of April, we will continue to request canned Soup, Pork & Beans, Chili, Macaroni & Cheese and Tomato Sauce. We are also in need of Baby Diapers (Size 3 5). These are items that we do not receive often from the Second Harvest Food Bank. Please feel free to drop donations in the barrels in the Church, the barrel in the Foyer of the School or bring items to the Parish Office. Encounter the Risen Christ We prayed, fasted, and gave almsand now we celebrate Easter joy! Our Lenten journey with CRS Rice Bowl ends as we encounter our risen Lord. We reflect on our brothers and sisters whom we walked with in India, Zambia, El Salvador, Mexico, Ethiopia and Hawaii. And we commit to bring Easter joy to each person we meet in our daily lives. Don t forget to turn in your CRS Rice Bowl in the next few weeks. They can be dropped off in the Parish or School Office. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Easter is nearly three weeks later this year than last. Why does the date wobble around the calendar so? The way of calculating the date was set by the Emperor Constantine in 325. The decision ended a very bitter controversy in the church. Some people wanted to synchronize the Pasch with Passover on the fourteenth day of the Jewish month Nissan, and their opponents wanted it after the Passover was complete, on the after the first full moon of springtime. The ecclesiastical rules do not exactly connect with the astronomical rules. The emperor squashed the hopes of the quartodecimans, as the fans of 14 Nissan were called, and chose. The traditional rule is that Easter is the first after the first ecclesiastical full moon that occurs on or after the vernal equinox, the fourteenth day of the new moon, and later than March 21. Thus, Easter wobbles between March 22 and April 25. The actual tables and methods for computing the date are extraordinarily detailed, with subtle variations and mind-bending exceptions and charts with golden numbers, dominical letters, and epacts measuring leap years. In 1954 and 1962 the ecclesiastical calculations actually overrode the astronomical new moons and bumped Easter back a month! Today, there is a movement in the World Council of Churches (Protestants and Orthodox) for all Christians to combine their celebrations, based on the star charts for the Jerusalem skies. In principle, the Catholic Church is open to an ecumenical agreement on a fixed date for Easter, but we desire a unanimous decision from the World Council. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. 6 EASTER MESSAGE FROM BISHOP PATRICK J. MCGRATH Dear Brothers and Sisters, Without the devastation of Good Friday, we could never appreciate the wonder of Easter and the joy of the Resurrection. Only in the context of the utter defeat of the Cross can the Empty Tomb be invested with meaning. Where death had seemed to conquer, life triumphed. In remaining faithful to the Father, Jesus did not regard equality with God something to be grasped... Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him. (Philippians 2:7-9a) Looking to the Resurrection, we strive toward our own participation in Jesus victory over death. As we sense in our own time that which renders life meaningless, so much more do we need what Risen Life promises: If we have died with the Lord, we shall rise with the Lord (2 Timothy 2:11). The first witnesses to the Resurrection included the Apostles, Peter and John, and Mary Magdalene, Apostle to the Apostles, who was the first to encounter the Risen Lord, thinking Him to be the gardener; it was she who ran to the Eleven to share with them the news of that Easter morning. As we enter into the holiest of our days and our celebrations, may the Risen One bring you, your families and loved ones the joy and peace that flows from His Resurrection from the dead. Alleluia! The Lord is truly risen. Alleluia!
