The following are some of the comments we received from young people (seventh and eighth graders) who helped us with our distribution of food and gifts. It was really an amazing experience to be able to meet the people that we were helping, talk to them, and to hear their stories. The gratitude that they expressed was heartwarming --Matthew Upcoming Second Offerings Your generosity is appreciated. *Denotes Parish Second Collection. 2/5 Community Ministry* When I volunteered at St. Justin, I met a girl named. Her house had burned down, but all she could think about was getting a gift for her mom. I completely rethought about my entire life and how lucky I was to be this fortunate --Bella When I went to St. Justin to deliver gifts to the people who couldn t afford them, it was like entering a new world. So many people there, and it was our job to help them all. I felt honored --Xavier When everything was said and done, St. Justin Community Ministry had packed and distributed Thanksgiving food to over 540 families. For Christmas, we distributed food to over 580 families and provided Christmas presents to over 1,850 children and grandchildren. Our extra gifts were taken to Sacred Heart Community Services where they were distributed before Christmas. It would be impossible to name all the individuals that helped to make our Thanksgiving and Christmas projects brighten the lives of so many. This weekend, our Second Collection is being taken to enable us to continue to provide food and services for people needing assistance. Thank you for all you do. 3 Matthew: The King and His Kingdom. This Catholic Bible study brings the history of Christ to life through Matthew s Gospel, our gospel readings for this Liturgical Year. You will see Jesus as the awaited Messiah who fulfills the promises and prophecies of the Old Testament, establishes the New Law, and inaugurates the Kingdom of Heaven. Set in the rich context of Jesus life, Matthew shows us who Jesus is and what his life and teachings mean for us today. Meet in the narthex before Mass for processional. After Mass, Boy Scout Troop 14 invites everyone to the Small Hall for coffee and donuts and to learn about the Troop and activities. Boy Scout Troop 14 has been active in Santa Clara for over 50 years and is chartered by St Justin Parish Community. We meet each Monday evening from 7:30 p.m. 9:00 p.m. in the Small Hall. The Troop goes on monthly camping trips and performs community service while working on advancement and learning valuable leadership skills. It is a life long journey towards a deeper relationship with Christ. Please return your costumes from the Christmas Eve liturgy to the Parish Ministry Center if you have not done so already. CLOW (Children s Liturgy of the Word) During the 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Masses, children are dismissed to the Parish Ministry Center Chapel for an age appropriate Liturgy of the Word. The children return to church during the Presentation of the Gifts. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Are you an adult seeking baptism? Or a baptized Christian seeking the full communion of the Catholic church? Or perhaps a baptized Catholic who wishes to complete initiation in the sacrament of confirmation? This program is for adults who are seeking baptism, or were baptized Catholic but have not celebrated the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. This is a process marked by liturgical rites that are celebrated with the community. This process is centered on the readings and includes attending Mass. For those who are spiritually prepared, they will receive the Sacraments of Initiation, (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) during the Easter Vigil. 5 MINISTRY NEWS COMMUNITY MINISTRY Outreach Dinner Our next Outreach dinner will be taking place next, February 19, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the Parish Small Hall. All Senior Citizen members of our Parish are invited, along with a guest, to this meal followed by BINGO. Financial Assistance for Parishioners St. Justin Community Ministry has set aside some funds to provide Parishioners with limited Financial Assistance when facing unexpected issues. If you find yourself in need, contact Joe Bauer at extension 109 or jbauer@dsj.org Food & Diaper Collection Most of you are aware of the Community Ministry Collection Barrels that are located in our Church. During the month of February, we will continue to request canned Soup, Pork & Beans, Chili, Macaroni & Cheese and Tomato Sauce. We are also in need of Baby Food (Fruits and Vegetables) as well as Baby Diapers (Size 3 5). These are items that we do not receive often from the Second Harvest Food Bank. Please feel free to drop donations in the barrels in the Church, the barrel in the Foyer of the School or bring items to the Parish Office. Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Needed For those of you who have back yard fruit trees with an over abundance of fruit and/or gardens with vegetables please consider donating what you can to Community Ministry. The fruit and vegetables are a welcome addition to the food that we distribute to those seeking assistance. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When the custom of the stational liturgies was revived in the city of Rome in the early days of the twentieth century, the papal liturgy for Good Friday was appropriately housed in the stational church of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, the Holy Cross of Jerusalem. The church is off the tourist track today, but true pilgrims would never miss it. It stands on the grounds of the Sessorian Palace, the home of the Empress St. Helena, mother of Constantine. She dedicated her life to finding the true cross of Christ in Jerusalem, and desired to found a church in Rome for people who could not make the long and dangerous trip to the Holy Land. Eventually, it came to house relics of the cross. When the pope fled the city of Rome for Avignon, the religious institutions of Rome collapsed and the church was abandoned. Centuries later it was given into the care of monks. Amazingly, it concealed a forgotten treasure. In 1492 repairmen took down a brick wall and discovered a niche with the inscription Title of the Cross, and within, an ancient wooden tablet on which was carved the inscription dictated by Pilate for the cross of Christ in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. No one is certain that this is authentic, although its discovery was enough to give the church great prestige among pilgrims. Stand and be Counted Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment in all its dimensions brings you advantages, recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner makes things much easier when it is time for infant Baptism, weddings, when asked to be a Baptismal or Confirmation Sponsor and even funerals. We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and Confirmation Sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active and contributing member. So, are you a registered parishioner? If not, please consider registering. Registration forms are available in the Parish Ministry Center or online at MUSLIM-CATHOLIC COMMUNITY EVENT PRODUCES PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN TWO FAITHS By Diocese of San Jose (SAN JOSE, CA, 01/17/17) Over 750 Muslims and Catholics from the surrounding area gathered at the SABA Islamic Center on Monday, January 16, for a community event of hope and solidarity. Following the event, leaders from the two religious communities have agreed to form a local Muslim-Catholic Council. Let us commit to move forward together so that today s prayer is not simply a symbolic gesture of good will, but rather, a promise to engage in an on-going dialogue of mutual understanding leading to friendship and common work, said Bishop Patrick J. McGrath, of the Diocese of San Jose during the event. Bishop McGrath will appoint several Catholic members and the same will be appointed from members of the Muslim community. The Council will meet quarterly to plan and evaluate collaborative efforts. The multi-lateral aspects of their efforts will include: Clergy-to-clergy. This would entail regular meetings between Catholic clergy and professional ministerial staff and Muslim clergy and professional staff. These conversations could be about topics that clergy deal with every day, things of professional interest, or possible projects that clergy might want to do together. Some sessions could talk about respective theology and culture, others about hotter items like Palestine. The Council would determine the curriculum of such conversations. Message from the Office of the Bishop Temporary Liturgical Adaptations during the Flu/Cold Season 1.We will suspend offering Holy Communion under both Species. 2. Holy Communion will be distributed only into the hands of communicants; during this time, Holy Communion will not be distributed on the tongue. 3. The Sign of Peace should be adapted so as to allow for a greeting that does not involve shaking hands or touching. 4. People should avoid holding hands Religious Education; educator-toeducator. These conversations would be between Catholic educators and Muslim educators. Among them, school principals, administrators, religious educators, who would gather to talk about topics that would help respective Muslim and Catholic students understand and appreciate the nuances of religious traditions. It would also help plan and coordinate guest speakers to come to speak to students in classrooms. Congregation-to-congregation. These conversations would bring Catholics and Muslims together for fellowship and popular education about respective traditions and it would help demystify and demythologize negative impressions. The Council would help create a curriculum and process for these conversations. Peace drives our work within our communities and our work in the world, said the Bishop. We must seize this opportunity to work together to make this country a better place for all people. Muslims and Catholics share many beliefs and values which in turn offer a platform to launch our efforts from, said Moulana Nabi Raza Abidi of the SABA Islamic Center. We look forward to working closely together to serve our creator through serving his creation. during the recitation or singing of the Lord s Prayer. 5. A reminder that the obligation to participate in Mass does not hold for those who are seriously ill or may have flu or cold symptoms. When appropriate, we will return to our normal liturgical practices, which highly value full participation in the Eucharist through the sharing of the cup and generous signs of hospitality, reconciliation, and unity.
