Registration occurs in the summer Homestead Road, Santa Clara, CA Phone: (408) ~ Website: Celebrating First Communion On Holy Thursday, the school community came together to celebrate a Seder meal. Students learned about the Old Testament story of Moses, the pharaoh, how the blood of the lamb protected the Israelites, and how God saved them from slavery. After the completion of the Old Testament meal, we read the Gospel account of Jesus last supper with his disciples: And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Luke 22:19 After the Seder, we gathered in the church where our 8 th graders performed a live Stations of the Cross. The children brought to life the heartbreak of each station with solemnity. It was a deeply meaningful way for us to remember Christ s sacrifice for us and prepare for Easter. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one s life for one s friends. John 15:13 Each week at Mass we offer gifts of bread and wine, we remember the Last Supper and Jesus sacrifice. At each of the Masses this week we have the extreme pleasure to celebrate First Eucharist with 53 of our children. While a child s first Communion is indeed a cause for celebration and should be beautiful and memorable, the true focus of that holy and special day must remain the sacrament itself as the little ones are welcomed to the table of the Lord. The most helpful support for all children is the example and practice of their parents, to live a conscious Christian life at home. They do this by regularly attending Mass, spending time in prayer, reading the Scriptures, expressing sorrow for sin, and readily granting forgiveness. As a parish community, we welcome the children to the table of the Lord by being a family of believers. Model for them that church is a place where people sing, are happy, and where a child is greeted with a smile. Congratulate them on this very special day, and express your pleasure that they are joining you for Communion. For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:12 I am grateful to be a part of this wonderful community and join you in welcoming our newest members to the table. Our lives were touched by stories from Kenya, Guatemala, the Philippines, Malawi, Haiti and the United States. Through our Lenten prayers and donations, we have touched the lives of millions of people served by Catholic Relief Services, our representative to the poorest communities in the world. Please return your Rice Bowl to the Parish or School office by May 4 and Thank You for your generosity. Reflecting on God s Word Sometimes new worlds unexpectedly slip up over our horizon and catch us off guard. One morning we get up, stand at the foot of our bed, look out the window, and oh so briefly think how good it is to be alive; and for a moment we smile to ourselves before resuming the arranging of our day. Or we sit with a friend at a noonday lunch, telling stories and laughing over what our lives have been; and somewhere in the midst of it all we think to ourselves that what is happening right at this moment is worth all the struggles and tears of life. Or we sit by ourselves in the rare quiet of a house that is hardly ever so, and daydream, and think about what has gone on in this house over all the days and years, and realize that more than living has happened here, that love has, and maturing; and then the back door slams and our day returns to its tumultuous chaos. These are all moments of grace, moments when the shadows part if only briefly, and we see more clearly than we ever have before that it s the very presence of God in which we live and move. Then of course the moment disappears, and we d like to tell someone about it and maybe we try, but in the end our words fall short. After all, how does one find words to explain how for a brief while we walked life with God more consciously than ever before? I find myself wondering if that was part of what took place as Cleopas and his friend found themselves joined by a stranger on their journey from Jerusalem to Emmaus. How could they not know this stranger was Jesus? Maybe the grace of it was that through faith they came to recognize the Lord Jesus among them, and it didn t much matter whether that dawning of light came quickly or slowly. What did matter was that it happened. Rev. Joseph J. Juknialis Copyright 2013, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. St. Justin Mens Club will meet on Tuesday, May 6, at 6:00 p.m. in the Small Hall. Our guest speaker, Steve Russell will discuss and answer questions about Diocesan financing.
