Sacrament of the Sick If you know of any parishioner who is ill, at home, or in the hospital, please notify the Parish Office so our Eucharistic Ministers of the Sick may bring communion or anointing can be arranged. Baptism Infant baptism is celebrated following completion of our parish Baptism Preparation Program. New and expectant parents are invited to call the Parish Office at Youth Confirmation High School Youth Confirmation is celebrated during the Easter Season. Registration occurs in the summer. The Baptism of the Lord Although many of us may have already taken down our Christmas decorations, liturgically speaking, the Christmas season hasn t ended yet; today is the last day. Holidays like Christmas are moments of great grace. This grace renews us and prepares us for our return to the season of Ordinary Time, to the continuing work of discipleship. In a way, today s feast is the high point of the Christmas season. In the story of Jesus baptism, we hear the report of a significant moment in Jesus life. By accepting baptism from John the Baptist, Jesus shows himself to accept solidarity with sinners. In the voice from heaven and the descent of the Holy Spirit, we know that God received this offering from Jesus and found it pleasing. In the passages that follow in Mark s Gospel, we learn that Jesus baptism marks the beginning of his public ministry. Surprisingly, on this the last day of the Christmas season the Gospel does not tell a story from Jesus childhood. Instead the Gospel reveals Jesus relationship to God: the Son of Mary and Joseph is also God s own Son. We believe that through Baptism we are also made children of God. As the Christmas season comes to an end, we are now faced with a choice. We can forget about all these things and go back to business as usual, or we can take them seriously and do our best to live new lives. We need to continue the work of Jesus in the world we live in. We need to work to build the Kingdom of God in the world we live in. There is plenty of work for us to do. Perhaps this is the time for you to take a deep breath, summon your courage and step forward to become more involved in our community of faith. If you do, your life will certainly never be the same. 3 Diocesan Wedding Anniversary Celebration Bishop Patrick J. McGrath would like to invite all couples who are celebrating their 5th (or less), 25th, 40th and 50th (or more) Wedding Anniversaries in 2015 to participate in our Annual Wedding Anniversary Mass on February 14 at 2:00 p.m. at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph. The couples will be invited to renew their wedding vows and will receive a blessing from Bishop Patrick McGrath who will preside over the celebration. Each couple will also receive a certificate signed by the Bishop. General Information Our Early Childhood Education Program (ages three through First Grade) meets Sunday, 9-10 a.m., while our Elementary Program (2 nd grade through Junior High) meets Sunday, 10:15-11:30 a.m. If you are new to Catechetical Ministry, please print out a registration packet from our website or complete one in Room 2 on Sunday. How is Your Preschooler Enjoying Mass? During the 9 a.m. Mass, we offer an Early Childhood Program. Though our Kindergarten class is filled to capacity, our Three-year and Four-year old classes still have plenty of room. Our program provides a developmentally appropriate faith-based experience for the youngest members of our community. You are welcome to try a week and see if it is a good fit for your family. 5 MINISTRY NEWS Community Ministry The Baptism of the Lord Outreach Dinner Thank you to Linda Zazzara, her family and friends who sponsored last week s Outreach Dinner. Linda sponsored this meal in memory of her late husband, Robert Schwalbe who passed away on January 4, Our next Outreach Dinner will be taking place on Sunday, January 18, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in our Parish Small Hall. All Senior Citizen members of our Parish are invited, along with a guest, to this meal followed by BINGO. Blanket and Sleeping Bags Collection During the Cold Weather we often receive requests for Sleeping Bags and/or Blankets. If you have any that you could donate to Community Ministry please drop them off at the Pantry, Monday through Saturday from or the Parish Office, Monday through Friday from 9 5 (closed 12-1:15 p.m.) Food Collection Most of you are aware of the Community Ministry Collection Barrels that are located in our Church. During the month of January, we will continue to request Canned Soup, Pork & Beans, Chili, Macaroni & Cheese, Tomato Sauce and Canned Tuna. These are items that we do not receive often from the Second Harvest Food Bank. Please feel free to drop donations in the barrels in the Church, in the Foyer of the School or bring items to the Parish Office. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the 1560s, the Council of Trent attempted to standardize the widely variant customs for the pastoral care of the sick and dying. We had inherited a practice called extreme unction, from the Latin words meaning anointing at the point of death. The deeper tradition, however, is about the prayer of faith that will heal and restore the sick person, and is straight from the Letter of James. The Fathers went back to the beginning, and while not discarding the extreme unction name, made a plea for the proper use of this sacrament. As soon as a person is in danger of death from sickness or old age, they reasoned, the time for the sacrament had already arrived. As a result of this desire, the next ritual text for anointing contained an innovation: a rite for visiting the sick that included readings from scripture, psalms, and prayers. Old customs fade slowly, however, and the quality of pastoral care languished for centuries while people delayed the celebration of a consoling and effective sacrament, sometimes missing the opportunity completely. A priest ministering to a dying and unconscious patient alone in a room has never been the desire of the Church. Our tradition is far too rich for this sacrament to be celebrated in such a diminished and ungenerous manner. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 6 Ron and Pat Gerard January 1, 1958 Small Christian Communities Pope Francis has asked that we celebrate a Year of Consecrated Life starting with the new liturgical year. What better way to honor these priests and religious sisters and brothers than to encourage our young people to also give their lives to our Lord! Young people are 50% more inclined to consider and act on a religious vocation if at least 3 separate people invite them. Extend that invitation! There will be a discernment retreat January 16-18, 2015 for men and January 31-Feb 1, 2015 for women. These young people should be baptized Catholics and between years old. More details can be found at or on Facebook at A Small Christian Community meets on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month, 7:30-9:00 p.m., for discussion of faith and our church beliefs, based on a variety of sources such as Sunday Mass readings, faith-related books, video-taped lectures, etc. We will begin 2015 using the Quest Reflections series, which centers on the readings for the Sunday Mass following each meeting, with reflections and questions for discussion relevant to daily life. Our next meeting will be Monday, January 12th, discussing the readings for Sunday, January 18th. Anyone interested in increasing faith is welcome to attend, listen and take part in discussions.
