Baptism Infant baptism is celebrated following completion of our parish Baptism Preparation Program. New and expectant parents are invited to call the Parish Office at Youth Confirmation High School Youth Confirmation is celebrated during the Easter Season. Today, I would like to share with you part of the sermon Pope Francis preached last May when he visited the Basilica of St. Mary Major. He spoke about a woman s role as a mother, and how Mary serves as a model for all of us. A mother always worries above all about the health of her children I think above all: she helps us grow, to confront life, to be free. A mother helps her children grow up and wants them to grow strong; that is why she teaches them not to be lazy not to sink into a comfortable life-style, contenting oneself with possessions. The mother takes care that her children develop better, that they grow strong, capable of accepting responsibilities, of engaging in life, of striving for great ideals. The mother helps her children to see the problems of life realistically and not to get lost in them, but to confront them with courage, not to be weak, and to know how to overcome them, in a healthy balance that a mother senses between the area of security and the area of risk. And a mother can do this! She does not always take the child along the safe road, because in that way the child cannot develop, but neither does she leave the child only on the risky path, because that is dangerous. A mother knows how to balance things. A life without challenges does not exist Lastly, a good mother not only accompanies her children in their growth, without avoiding the problems and challenges of life; a good mother also helps them to make definitive decisions with freedom. This is not easy, but a mother knows how to do it. But what does freedom mean? It is certainly not doing whatever you want, allowing yourself to be dominated by the passions, to pass from one experience to another without discernment, to follow the fashions of the day; freedom does not mean, so to speak, throwing everything that you don t like out the window. No, that is not freedom! Freedom is given to us so that we know how to make good decisions in life! During this month of May, we join the Church in celebrating Mary: The mother teaches us how to be fruitful, to be open to life and to always bear good fruit, joyful fruit, hopeful fruit, and never to lose hope, to give life to others, physical and spiritual life. If you have any questions about our programs, contact Tracy Sevigny at Youth Faith Formation Sunday Morning Early Childhood Program, 9-10am, Sundays We offer an Early Childhood Program during the 9 a.m. Mass, from Fall until April. Three year olds through 1st graders experience an age-appropriate faith development program. Ongoing Faith Formation, 10:15-11:30am, Sundays, 2nd - Jr. High Continue to fulfill the promises you made at your child s baptism. Mature faith is a product of ongoing formation. Our program supports your efforts to assist your child in forming a lifelong relationship with Jesus. Sacramental Preparation Program Our program prerequisite is enrollment in either Catholic School or our ongoing Faith Formation Sessions on Sunday mornings, for an entire year prior to preparation for the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist. All community members are welcome to attend this Mass. Please keep the candidates, their families, sponsors, and catechists in your prayers as they approach their final sacrament of initiation. 5 MINISTRY NEWS Community Ministry Second Collection Thank you to all who gave so generously to last week s Second Collection supporting our own Community Ministry. $ was collected which will certainly help us to continue to provide services to those who come to us seeking assistance. Community Garden News Most of you are aware of the fact that we now have a Community Garden. What started out as a project organized by four wonderful 7 th grade Girl Scouts is now a working garden. Last week vegetable planting took place with the food being raised to be distributed through Community Ministry. We want you to know of two ways that we could use some help. Community Ministry 1. We are searching for a few volunteers who might be interested in helping with the watering of the garden, especially during the summer when school is not in session. 2. If you are interested in supporting the garden by purchasing an Engraved Brick for either $125 or $500 please contact the parish or school office by the end of this month. Outreach Dinner Thank you Ginny Ronchetti and Bessie Nicosia who sponsored last week s Outreach Dinner with the help of Christy & Dennis Jacobs and Nikola Modric. There is another Outreach Dinner taking place today, Sunday, May 18, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in our Parish Small Hall. All Senior Citizens are invited to this Meal followed by BINGO. Food Collection Most of you are aware of the Community Ministry Collection Barrels that are located in our Church. During the month of May, we will continue to request Canned Soup, Pork & Beans, Chile, Macaroni & Cheese, Tomato Sauce and Canned Tuna. These are items that we do not receive often from the Second Harvest Food Bank. Please feel free to drop donations in the barrels in the Church, in the Foyer of the School or bring items to the Parish Office. Fresh Fruit and Vegetables needed For those of you who have back yard fruit trees with an over abundance of fruit and/or gardens with vegetables please consider donating what you can to Community Ministry. The fruit and vegetables are a welcome addition to the food that we distribute to those seeking assistance. Being a registered parishioner makes things much easier when it is time for infant Baptism, weddings, when asked to be a Baptismal or Confirmation Sponsor and even funerals. We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and Confirmation Sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active and contributing member.
