Marriage Couples registered within the parish are required to make arrangements at least six months prior to the date of marriage by calling and must complete a Marriage Preparation Program. Sacrament of the Sick If you know of any parishioner who is ill, at home, or in the hospital, please notify the Parish Office so our Eucharistic Ministers of the Sick may bring communion or anointing can be arranged. Baptism Infant baptism is celebrated following completion of our parish Baptism Preparation Program. New and expectant parents are invited to call the Parish Office at Youth Confirmation High School Youth Confirmation is celebrated during the Easter Season. Registration occurs in the summer. If we watch the news, we may find ourselves growing ever more cynical and despondent regarding the state of human nature and the direction in which our world seems to be headed. However, Christians are called to be beacons of hope. Joy is a fruit of the Spirit. We must strive not to succumb to the growing malaise that at times seems to engulf our society. This weekend s readings are a treatise on the theological virtue of Hope. In the readings, we see the metaphors of planting and growth as the best examples of absolute confidence in God s ability to bring all things to good for those who place their hope in Him. Ezekiel s description of a tender shoot being torn from the top of a cedar seems almost violent as it is then abruptly planted, unprotected from the elements on the top of the mountain. Yet this cedar grows to such an extent that other creatures end up finding a home in its protection. We, too, should have such confidence that though we may feel plucked from our comfort zone and asked to cope in a new environment, in fact, we can thrive, if we put our focus on God. In our Gospel, we reflect on how abundant and unexpected are the fruits of our labors. It is not in our control to determine the harvest. It is only for us to scatter the seeds wherever we go, confident that even though our seeds be very small, God can yield plants that meet the needs of others. Often, just as the tender shoot of the cedar is planted far from its mother tree, we move on before seeing the full results of our labors. Children graduate and move on. Parents move to their retirement homes. We are encouraged in our Scriptures to know that we and our loved ones are never abandoned by God. Though fragile, we are rooted in hope. They that are planted in the house of the Lord, shall flourish in the courts of our God. Similarly, it is with bittersweet joy that my family digs up its roots here at St. Justin and settles elsewhere. This community has nourished our souls for decades, and we pray that we have given back in adequate measure for all the gifts we have received along the way. You will remain in our prayers and we look forward to visiting in the years to come. May God bless you always! Special thanks to Joe and Ines Noia who donated the Hamburgers, to the Stablemates who prepared the Burgers and Beans, the Ladies Guild who brought the cookies and helped serve, the Guadalupe Society for preparing the Hot Dogs, the Fil-Am Group for providing the soda and water, the Knights of Columbus for the Garnish and sponsoring Neon the Clown, the school for preparing the games and face painting, Mary Sparacino who donated the Raffle tickets and our Choir for providing the entertainment. A great time was had by all!!! The 2015 Monsignor R.T. Mentasti Scholarship of $1,600 was awarded to Jin-Hee Lee from St. Justin School. Jin-Hee was presented with a certificate at the 8 th grade graduation ceremony on June 5 th and will be attending Archbishop Mitty High School in the fall. The St. Justin Parish Community extends their congratulations and best wishes for every success in this new and exciting step in Jin-Hee s educational journey. Stand and be Counted Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment in all its dimensions brings you advantages, recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner makes things much easier when it is time for infant Baptism, weddings, when asked to be a Baptismal or Confirmation Sponsor and even funerals. We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and Confirmation Sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active and contributing member. If you have any questions about our programs, contact Tracy Sevigny at Youth Faith Formation FAITH Beyond 2000 Our diocesan-sponsored Morning Early Childhood Program, 9-10am, s, PreK3-1st We offer an Early Childhood Program during the 9 a.m. Mass, from Fall until end of April. Grouped by age, three year olds through 1st graders experience an age-appropriate faith experience. Registration packets are available on our website or in the Parish Office. Ongoing Faith Formation, 10:15-11:30am, s, 2nd-Jr. High Continue to fulfill the promises you made at your child s baptism. Mature faith is a product of ongoing formation. Our program supports your efforts to assist your child in forming a lifelong relationship with Jesus. Registration packets are available on our website or in the Parish Office. Sacramental Preparation Program Our program prerequisite is enrollment in either Catholic School or our ongoing Faith Formation Sessions on mornings, for an entire year prior to preparation for the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist. Preparations are parent-led at home and family-oriented parish events. Enroll your child in our Ongoing Faith Formation this Fall for Communion, May High School Confirmation Program We use Ascension Press Chosen program to prepare St. Justin Parish youth for the sacrament of Confirmation. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION A wedding celebrated in the Eastern Church has a form that was fixed a thousand years ago. In the West, our story is more complicated by constant change and variation. As the world s structures tottered in the ninth century, bishops and priests stepped into the void left by collapsing civil structures. For the first time, marriage was referred to as a sacrament, and wedding ceremonies were to be in public (assuring the free consent of the bride) after an investigation of the couple by a priest. The custom of the blessing of the bridal room diminished, and was finally forbidden in 1012 by the Council of Rouen, although it continued for centuries. In the diocese of Perigueux in France, a ritual from 1827 had the parish priest clad in surplice and stole sprinkling the bridal couple as they stood modestly in their pajamas by the wedding bed. 5 MINISTRY NEWS A concert to benefit the restoration of the Cathedral s Stained Glass Windows. Community Ministry Food Collection Outreach Dinner Our next Outreach Dinner will be taking place on, June 28 beginning at 1:30 p.m. in our Parish Small Hall. All Senior Citizen members of our Parish are invited, along with a guest, to this meal followed by BINGO. Financial Assistance for Parishioners St. Justin Community Ministry has set aside some funds to provide Parishioners with limited Financial Assistance when facing unexpected issues. If you find yourself in need, contact Joe Bauer at Ex 109 or joeb@st-justin.org June 14, 2015 Most of you are aware of the Community Ministry Collection Barrels that are located in our Church. During the month of June, we will continue to request canned Soup, Pork & Beans, Chili, Macaroni & Cheese and Tomato Sauce. We are also in need of Baby Food, especially Vegetables, Fruits and Cereals. These are items that we do not receive often from the Second Harvest Food Bank. Please feel free to drop donations in the barrels in the Church, the barrel in the Foyer of the School or bring items to the Parish Office. Fresh Fruit and Vegetables needed For those of you who have back yard fruit trees with an over abundance of fruit and/or gardens with vegetables please consider donating what you can to Community Ministry. The fruit and vegetables are a welcome addition to the food that we distribute to those seeking assistance. Eleventh in Ordinary Time On, July 12, the Saint Joseph Cathedral Foundation is hosting a VIP reception in the Rectory, with a concert to follow featuring the Northwest Boychoir from Seattle Washington. The Northwest Boychoir shared a 2009 Grammy nomination with the Seattle Symphony for a recording of Samuel Jones The Shoe Bird. When soundtrack composers need the unique boychoir sound, they often turn to the Northwest Boychoir whose professional talents are featured on films and video games. The Northwest Boychoir is featured on Peggle 2, Quantum Leap Symphonic Choirs sample library, and has recorded with the Oscar-winning film composer, Michael Giacchino. The evening kicks off with a VIP reception where you will get to meet the members of the Northwest Boychoir and several dignitaries and end the evening with a concert full of the beautiful soaring voices of this premiere choir.
