1 St. Jude Newsletter A bi-monthly newsletter dedicated to nurturing the growth and community of St. Jude Parish Jan-March.2014 St. Jude Lenten Experience Sunday, March 9 from noon 3pm Eight areas will be set up in the Parish Hall with a variety of activities that will draw you and your family into the spirit of Lent. St. Jude Prepares For Lent and Triduum Change me, Lord, from glory to glory; Mold me, Lord, till I am like you. Change me, Lord, from glory to glory; Change me, Lord, make me new. By Kevin Demetroff On Sunday, March 2, the Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time, also known as Carnival Sunday, we bring last year s Palm Sunday palms to Mass. At the end of Mass, we bring them forward in procession to the foot of the altar. We burn them to make our Ash Wednesday ashes. We celebrate Ash Wednesday Mass on March 5 at 6:15 a.m., 8:15 a.m., 10:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Ashes are distributed at each Mass. On this day, unlike others, there is no Penitential Act at the beginning of Mass. We begin with song, sign of Continued on pg. 3

3 Lent and Triduum cont. from pg 1 the cross, greeting and the collect (opening prayer). As we enter the Lenten springtime of the spirit, our celebration of Mass is marked by the season. The church in which we worship stands sober, simple. Violet, the royal hue, replaces the greens of ordinary time. Mass begins after a time of silence on our knees or seated. On Sundays we sing Change me, Lord and hear the Entrance Antiphon and psalm verses of the Mass of the day. We acknowledge our sinfulness in the Penitential Act B (Priest: Have mercy on us, Lord. / ALL: FOR WE HAVE SINNED AGAINST YOU. / Priest: Show us, O Lord, your mercy. / ALL: AND GRANT US YOUR SALVATION.) We sing our ancient cry for God s gentle mercy, Kyrie eleison, a Greek phrase meaning Lord, have mercy. Scripture readings and psalms remind us of our need for repentance and assure us of God s constant mercy and the salvation accomplished in Christ Jesus. We hear the stories that prepare our catechumens for baptism, and prepare those of us already baptized to renew our baptismal commitment. Our shout of joy, Alleluia! is not heard until the Easter Vigil. We play musical instruments only to accompany singing. Lenten worship is not sad or mournful, but simple, to allow us to concentrate on the disciplines that renew us prayer, fasting and almsgiving. On the first two Sundays of Lent each year we hear the stories of Jesus fasting in the wilderness, and the Transfiguration of Jesus on Mount Tabor. On the third, fourth and fifth Sundays, at Masses with those preparing for baptism, as well as all Masses in Year A, we hear of the meeting of Jesus with the Samaritan woman at Jacob s well, the healing by Jesus of the man born blind, and Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. These readings are so important that they may be used every year. On Palm Sunday, the Passion of Jesus according to Saint Matthew is proclaimed. During Lent we also celebrate: --The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick on Sunday, March 16, at 12:30 p.m. --Outdoor Stations of the Cross on Sunday, March 23, at 1 pm. --Our parish Lenten Reconciliation Service on Thursday, April 10, at 7:00 p.m. --Stations of the Cross each Friday of Lent at 1:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. --Mass each Friday of Lent at 6:00 p.m., before Stations All of this leads us to the Sacred Paschal Triduum, our great Three Days, beginning with the Evening Mass of the Lord s Supper at 7:00 p.m. on Holy Thursday, April 17 and ending with Great Paschal Evensong on Easter Sunday, April 20, at 5:00 p.m. Set these days aside now. Mark your calendar for the most important days of the year. The full Triduum schedule is elsewhere in this newsletter, will be published in the parish bulletin and posted in the Litugy and Music section under Worship on our parish web site Visit our web site often on your desktop, laptop, tablet or smart phone, to celebrate the season along with the parish and with the church throughout the world. 3

4 Tuition Reconfiguration Plan Hello everyone, This past January I unveiled the plan for our tuition reconfiguration. This exciting change is going to be a great benefit for St. Jude Parish. I know that this plan will be a change for school families, but I think it is a change that is well-worth the effort. As you know, the state of Indiana has inaugurated a School Choice Scholarship program. This program (commonly referred to as the voucher program) pays for the parent portion of their child s education expenses at whatever school they choose up to $4700 per student. However, the choice voucher does not cover the full cost of education, but only the parent s tuition portion. Our previous tuition system gave an automatic price reduction for parishioner status and for multiple children. This means that almost every child that attended St. Jude last year received some aid from St. Jude Parish. I m happy to give this aid and I want it to continue. However, by changing our tuition structure, and by charging the full cost of tuition, we will receive the full cost of education from the state of Indiana for each child who qualifies for a choice scholarship. Families that do not qualify for choice scholarships will be asked to apply for financial assistance. Using very generous income qualifications, we will grant financial assistance to the amount that equaled last year s tuition discount. This means that for the vast majority of those who paid tuition last year, your effective tuition will not increase this year. Rather than receiving a tuition discount from the parish, you will receive financial assistance. But, by and large, you will not see an appreciable change in the amount of tuition you will pay. We are not substantially raising tuition, we are changing the way we understand tuition. I hope this helps everyone to understand what is going on. I m more than happy to discuss this with every parish family if necessary. Just give me a call ( ) or send me an Thanks, Father Jake The Grapevine Goes Quarterly By The Communication Committee Beginning with this issue, our parish newsletter The Grapevine will be published quarterly as opposed to six times a year. We still want to pack every issue with as much parish and school news, liturgical information and photos as possible. We would like to have a page of Happenings, so if you have pictures from any parish or school events you would like included, please them to Also, we Save the Date would really like to educate the parish on what all of our comst. Jude VBS 2014 mittees do here at St. Jude. Please if you would like to include a write-up about your committee. June 24, 25, 26 9am - noon Lastly, we would like to invite anyone who is interested in working on editing and publishing The Grapevine to join the Children age 4 through grade 7 are Communications committee. We would love to have many difencouraged to attend ferent perspectives, so that we can best serve all the needs of the parish. 4
