This will be the fourth Mother s Day without my mom. I know that many of you are in a similar situation. Moms are very important and we need to honor them and thank them often for the many sacrifices they make on behalf of their children. Mothers also teach us our values and share with us faith. I continue to thank God for the lessons taught me by my own mother. God bless our mothers! Thank you! On a lighter note, Fr. Bill Myers, a retired priest from our diocese, sends out some humorous stories and anecdotes each month to the area priests. In this month s letter he sent the following: Things my mother taught me: *My mother taught me to appreciate a job well done: If you re going to kill each other do it outside I just finished cleaning! *My mother taught me how to turn to God: You better pray that will come out of the carpet! *My mother taught me to think ahead: Make sure you wear clean underwear in case you get in an accident. *My mother taught me about osmosis: Shut your mouth and eat your food. *My mother taught me about contortionism: Will you look at the dirt on the back of your neck. In most dioceses of the United States today is the Feast of the Ascension of our Lord. Next week we gather to celebrate Pentecost the gift of the Holy Spirit. Today we are reminded that Christ s ascent into heaven does not mean we are abandoned. Rather the risen Christ continues to be with us through the gift of the Holy Spirit. I remember when I learned to ride a bike as a little child. That first bike had training wheels. I felt safe and secure knowing that the bike would not fall over when it stopped. One day my dad took those training wheels off but he held onto me while I rode the bike. Finally I figured out how to ride that bike on two wheels. I remember that when dad finally let go, he continued to run along side me in case I might fall. That image of my father running next to me while I was riding the bike is a fitting image for us to ponder. We are not left as orphans. We are not abandoned. God is with us and will never depart. Questions to ponder this week: *Jesus is not some distant memory. His Ascension to the Father is not a departure, but the opportunity for a deeper, new presence. Name a recent time that you were aware of God s presence guiding you? Can you look back at your life and see the working of grace, God s life?

3 St. Paul s Faith Stories Have you been missing our bulletin testimonies? Are you wondering where they have gone? We are currently looking for more stories! Do you know someone in our community who has had a powerful encounter with Jesus, who witnesses their faith in a humble yet vibrant way, who lives as an intentional disciple? Have you ever thought about nominating them for sharing their faith story? Take this chance to think about how God has moved in your own life or how you have seen Him working in others lives. Pope Francis tells us to "Go out and share your testimony, go out and interact with your brothers, go out and share, go out and ask. Become the Word in body as well as spirit." We are called to share and give glory to God who is working in our lives. If you'd like to nominate someone to share their story or if you have a powerful story, please check out the website or contact the office. We'd love to hear from you!

4 Blue Mass May 16 5:30 pm Saint Paul the Apostle Church and Knights of Columbus welcomes all first responders, law enforcement, fire, corrections staff, and dispatchers of Scott County to attend our second annual Blue Mass. The Blue Mass is so-named because of the predominantly blue colored uniforms of police officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians. First responders of all faiths and traditions are welcome and encouraged to attend. The focus and intention of the Blue Mass is to celebrate and honor public safety professionals as well as show UNITY with GOD and COM- MUNITY. Bishop Martin Amos and Fr. Tony Herold will concelebrate the Mass. There will be a reception following the Mass. St. Paul the Apostle Homebound Ministry Did you know that if you or a member of your family cannot come to church due to health or age, for a few weeks or permanently, we can come to you? Thank you to all who donated to the Seminarian Education fund. At the end of this week our diocese has raised $251,731 in seminarian donations from 1,932 households. The Assumption High School Choir and Jazz Choir Spring Choir Concert At Our Lady of Lourdes Tuesday, May 17th 7:00pm There will be no charge for admission, but donations are most welcome. The program will feature a variety of beautiful and fun choral music, Robert Ray s energetic and moving Gospel Mass, and acknowledgement of our graduating seniors. We hope you will make plans to join us! We can pray with you, bring Holy Communion or just visit for a while. We have a group of volunteers ready to come and see you. 5 St. Paul s Women s Golf League is scheduled! This is a best-ball style of play that allows for all levels of players. We meet eight times over the summer (Monday nights) for a cost of $136 due at the beginning of the season. Please join us for a little bit of exercise and a lot of social fun!
