3 March 18, th Sunday of Lent Create a clean heart in me, O God. (Psalm Response) Today s Responsorial Psalm portrays King David s response to God after he had committed adultery ordered Bathsheba s husband to be killed in battle. David was known as a man after God s own heart, but this story looks more like something you would see in a soap opera than what you would see in a man of God. What s worse, David couldn t even see that he had done anything wrong that is, until God sent Nathan the prophet to open his eyes. That s where today s psalm comes in. So what can we learn as we pray this psalm along with David? First, often we cannot see our own sins, both our small sins and our big sins. Lust, selfishness, pride, selfrighteousness, anger any of these can blind us, just as they blinded David. Thank you, Lord, for sending people to me who can help me to grow in holiness. Second, God always pursues us, both when we are close to him and when we are separated from him. He always pricks our minds. He always sends angels and other people to help us. He does what he can, by any means, to help us confess our sins and draw closer to him. Lord, help me to be more sensitive to your touch each day. Third, God s mercy is unfathomable. Even David s acts of adultery and murder didn t keep God from pursuing him and fulfilling his plan for the king. The moment we repent, God s love and mercy will well up in our hearts, just as it did for David. Thank you, Lord, for your faithfulness. Finally, look at the last two lines of this psalm. David is promising that if God forgives him, he will do his best to lead other people to him. A desire to serve and care for other people is the natural response to God s mercy. Lord, use me for your purposes. O God, have mercy on me. Create a clean heart in me. Fill me with your Holy Spirit, and I will share my faith with everyone around me. Gospel Mark 14:1-15:47 The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ In the Gospel that was read before the procession, the crowd was supportive, joyous, loving. In the Passion, which is read now, the crowd is quite the opposite. Our palms still lying on the pew behind us, the crowd has become hostile, shouting Crucify him! to Pilate, painting Jesus as a fraud and a danger. As we listen to Mark s account of the Passion, let us imagine the confidence Jesus had in his Father, enabling him to be obedient to the point of death. Shredding Event for both Paper & Electronics With the remodel project already underway, we will NOT be having a shredding event this summer for our staff and parishioners, teachers and school families, as we have in the even years before. We would like to let you know of an upcoming shredding opportunity, in case you are in need of those services. There will be a: Windermere Shredding Party for both Paper & Electronics, Saturday, April 14th from 11 am - 2 pm Windermere Office 311 N 85 th They will also be serving Barbecue! Hi Bill The Winter Olympics ended a few of weeks ago and I thought of the slogan "NO PAIN, NO GAIN. That slogan reminds me of a young man who was not a typical athlete as he was busy doing other things. He took care of his widowed mother. Had many friends and followers who enjoyed being with him. He could laugh and cry, loved to walk miles and miles. However, he met a very brutal death. His pain was our gain so that we could enter heaven. His name was Jesus. On Sunday, March 18, N Seattle Catholic Youth will offer one sexual abuse prevention course to your youth. In our efforts to protect our vulnerable population, the Archdiocese of Seattle has integrated abuse prevention material into our faith formation and youth ministry curriculum in the context of teaching our youth about our Catholic faith. To help you understand what your youth will be offered, we ask you to visit: This will provide you with Parent/ Guardian Resources, to inform you about the curriculum being used while also making available the actual lessons. As the guardian, you have the right to opt your child/youth out of this lesson. This announcement is to notify you of our new initiative to provide abuse prevention curriculum to our youth in Faith Formation/Youth Ministry. 7 Summer Trips with N Seattle Catholic Youth YOUTH MIGRANT CAMP MIDDLE SCHOOL MISSION TRIP August 19 to 24 St. John Parish has invited members of N Seattle Catholic Youth to join their annual Youth Migrant Camp Mission Trip in Burlington, WA. This immersion mission trip opportunity is for students in grades 6-8. Students pay for their room and board in a neighboring parish, and then spend four intense days immersed in migrant camp life.
