LEWISVILLE IS A STEPHEN MINISTRY CHURCH Stephen Ministers are trained lay care-givers who provide emotional and spiritual care to persons who are experiencing difficulties in their lives hospitalization, loss of a loved one, loss of job, or any other crisis situation. This is care in addition to the care the pastor gives. If you are interested in having a Stephen Minister, fill out one of the slips in the pew rack and put it in the offering plate or hand it to the minister or one of the Stephen Leaders, Becky Bingham or Tom Lee.

6 September is Christian Education Month as we lift up the importance of Sunday School and other educational opportunities at LUMC. It s about our need to know the Bible and how it relates to the issues of our day. As a Christian, we are also disciples of Jesus Christ. A disciple is a student, one who learns from the Master. Nearly every day, we are all faced with issues of what is right or wrong. How can we decide? What is the basis on which we determine what to believe and what to do? In one of my recent sermons, I noted John Wesley s guide for this which we call Wesley s Quadrilateral. He lists four things to consider. First is Scripture. The Bible is primary, and all teachings must be accepted only when confirmed and compared to the Bible. Second is tradition. We can look at how the truths of the Bible have been interpreted over the centuries. One of the tasks of the Holy Spirit has been to reveal the truth to us, to help us understand the truths of the Bible. Tradition does have something to say to us and to learn from. Third is reason. Our faith and teachings must be submitted to critical and scholarly analysis. Reason is no enemy of truth. God gave us minds with the ability to reason and think, and we should use them. And fourth is experience. The experiences of individuals can also help us to rightly confirm authority and truth. If it s the same God who works in every person, then there should be some common experiences that can help us know truth. So, we have tradition, reason, and experience, but all these are secondary to the Bible, for the Bible is primary. Following Wesley s teaching can help us plow through the issues of our day. And that s the goal of Christian Education, learning and applying God s Word to our everyday lives. Keith OUR CHURCH FAMILY.. SYMPATHY AND SPECIAL PRAYERS to the family and friends of James Williams, 15, a student at Forbush High School, who died last Thursday, September 13. YADKIN VALLEY DISTRICT DAYS OF LISTENING The newly created Yadkin Valley District is now in the process of getting organized. But first, our District Superintendent, Bill Medlin, would like to listen and talk with as many of the congregations as possible. He wants to learn what is on their minds and hearts during this transitional period and what this new District can do to help each church. Thus, Dr. Medlin is having eight Days of Listening in regional areas around the District. LUMC will be attending the session on Thursday, October 4, 7:00 p.m. at Trinity UMC on Country Club Road in Winston-Salem. If you cannot attend on that day, you may attend one on Sunday, September 23, 6:00 p.m. at Bethlehem UMC in Advance.

8 UPDATE: REBUILDING GOD S HOUSE STEEPLE WORK TO START Since our Note Burning Service on July 25, we now have received $17,350 towards our first project of repairing our church steeple. Things are being set in motion now to get this work done. NOTE, checks should be made out to Lewisville UMC and designated for the CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT FUND rather than the Building Fund or something else. We encourage your help in funding these projects, but please make sure your gifts are above and beyond regular giving to the Ministry Funding Plan or budget, as our regular expenses need continuous giving for our growing ministry. The next scheduled project will be to place new directional signs around the church. This is to help persons find their way around LUMC much better. We have a rather complicated church facility after being added onto a number of times over the years. Then, we have a smaller, but needed, project to place a fence behind the basketball court near the shelter that will keep balls out of the trees and wood pile. After that, we will have some landscaping projects for the West Wing area. COMING SOON: LUMC ORIENTATION CLASS Pastor Keith will be offering a two-week orientation class during the Sunday School time (9:45 a.m.) in the Fellowship Hall on Sundays, October 14 and 21. The class will discuss the United Methodist Church in general (beliefs, history, organization) and LUMC in particular (history, organization, programs and ministries). Open to all interested, newcomers and long-time members. This class is not a requirement before a person joins our church, but helps all become more acquainted with Lewisville UMC. CROP WALK IS OCTOBER 21 The annual CROP Walk for world hunger is Sunday, October 21, at 2:30 p.m., starting at the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds. More information and details coming.
