6 Summer: The Season of Rest [The following article is adapted from the writings of Rev. Dr. Dave Barnhart, a United Methodist pastor in the North Alabama Conference. I hope you find it helpful, as I did.] Rest is not a word that we Americans understand too well. Sure, we rest at night when we sleep. But rest is so much more than sleeping. For many of us rest seems like a waste of time. Some people have a difficult time imagining a day devoted to rest. We admire people who work hard and play hard. We have weekend projects, maintaining home or yard or garden. We travel or watch television. We have ball games and family obligations and hobbies. There is too much to do and too little time, and anyway, idle hands are the devil s workshop, right? As the old saying goes, there s no rest for the wicked, and the righteous don t need any. So to many of us, rest seems like a waste of time. We all feel the stress of busyness. We know we need a break, and we say that we should stop and smell the roses. But there never seems to be enough time for rest. We try to budget our time, stuffing time into envelopes and rationing it the way we budget money. We make distinctions between regular time and quality time. We know the consequences of such stress: high blood pressure, heart attacks, broken relationships, sleep deprivation, poor eating habits, and so on. Yet even knowing these things, hearing that we ought or should try to take a break simply gives us one more thing to squeeze into our calendars between the doctor s appointment and the deadline. Unfortunately, church doesn t help much, with our programs and studies and mission projects, all of which are so important to our spiritual growth. How can we rest? We re doing the Lord s work! So although we may know we need a break, we don t feel that we have time to rest. Yet God rested. How strange! A God who never sleeps, who is all-powerful and ever-present, decides to take the day off. We can hardly imagine it. What does God do on God s off day? The point is that because God rested, God directs God s people to rest (Exodus 31:17). The word sabbath actually comes from the Hebrew verb for rest. God instructs God s people to keep the sabbath holy as a perpetual sign of the covenant between God and Israel. Keeping the sabbath is like tithing our time to God. We give to God the first moments of the day, or the first day of our week. Because we are made in the image of God, we imitate God s rest after a busy week of doing and creating. It reminds us that all time is God s time. We make time for a little slice of eternity, and give that time as an offering to God in the same way that we put money into the offering plate. People who keep a sabbath, whether it is Saturday, Sunday, or some other regular day of rest and reflection, often say that it helps them value their time during the week even more. There s a paradox at work in the spiritual discipline of keeping a sabbath. Just as people who give generously never seem to run out of money, people who make a habit of carving out time for sabbath rest never seem to run out of time. Actually, we have more than enough time. Although time is finite, God somehow gives us minutes as fast as we spend them. God promises us eternal life, a joyful life without end, an abundant life where seconds and minutes, weeks and years are simply the beats and rests of an amazing symphony that never stops. We mark time within this music, playing our instruments with the skill God has given us, careful to pause during the rests, so that we may play on cue. God is generous with God s time. We have more than enough time, so we tithe that time back to God. Imagine your life with a regular sabbath rest. What do you do with those twenty-four hours if God forbids work? Nap in a hammock? Swing on a porch swing, sipping lemonade? Talk with friends? Picnic in the park with the kids? The Bible tells us that the sabbath is a foretaste of the kingdom of God, where children play in the streets and everyone sits in the shade of their own vineyard. Imagine: God wants such a life for us! An endless summer afternoon, spent in the company of people we love. God says, Why wait for heaven? Start doing it now. Shalom and happy Sabbath rest this summer! Ivan

8 Dads need lovin too! Join us for Father s Day! Turning the calendar to June, we find the wonderful day of celebration for our fathers or like-fathers. Irrespective of the language you speak, the word Dad or whoever you call Dad, speaks volumes about those special men who have contributed so much to who we are. The fatherly ways of love, guidance, wisdom and sometimes downright silliness, help to mold our future. On Sunday, June 19 th, at both services we are planning to have a Table of Tribute to the Dads. We encourage you to bring a photo, poem or a written letter/ , or any other item that reminds you of that special Dad such as an old tool or sports ball. Please bring the item with a sticky note attached (optional) including your name and that of your Father or Special Dad. At the designated time during the service, you will be asked to bring the item to the altar area as a Living Thanks and place it on the Tribute Table. Your items can be collected immediately following the service for return home. All men are a masterpiece of the living God. Let us celebrate the amazing men who have given us strength, encouragement and leadership, making an awesome difference in our lives. 9 WILL YOU HELP BUILD THE KINGDOM KITCHEN? Open Arms Community, a ministry of the Board of Global Missions of the United Methodist Church since 2000, serves over 4500 meals a year to low-resource children and adults in Winston- Salem. The meals are prepared in a residential kitchen that is so severely in need of repairs and updates that the floor is in danger of collapsing. We often think about disaster missions and international missions, but this is a mission in our own community that desperately needs our assistance. Some of our local United Methodist churches working together through missional networks have committed to making these renovations happen. The project is called Kingdom Kitchen. So far Open Arms has financial grants totaling $19,000 against a budget of $71,000, which is 26% of the funds needed. We are asking churches and groups within churches, such as UMW Circles, UMM, and Sunday School classes, to help us raise this funding. Please help us by spreading the word about this need in your congregation and prayerfully considering how you can help. Perhaps your church or group can meet one of these specific needs. Cabinets, stainless steel counter tops, flooring, appliances, painting, new wiring, new plumbing from street, etc. will be replaced. We need everything including the kitchen sink! For more information, contact: Paul Mullican, pwmullican@aol.com, or at You can mail checks directly to Open Arms, 437 E. Sprague Street, Winston- Salem, NC Please mark your check: "KINGDOM KITCHEN". UPCOMING DATES º June 19: Father s Day º June 27-30: Vacation Bible School º July 9: Trip on the Dan River º Aug. 5: Dash Ball Game DONATIONS FOR OUR UMAR FRIENDS! Items needed: paper towels, toilet paper, laundry detergent, zip-lock bags (all sizes), aluminum foil, Saran Wrap, craft supplies. Please leave your donations in the box under the table outside the Fellowship Hall. Our UMAR friends pick up our donations each month when they attend the Wednesday Night Pot-Luck Suppers A NIGHT AT THE DASH BALLGAME!!! Make your plans now to join us on August 5 for a night at the DASH. We are only reserving 60 seats on a first-come, first-served basis, so sign up as soon as you can! Cost for the tickets is $10 per person. Yes, I/we would like to attend the Dash ballgame on August 5. Name Number attending Phone number

10 Our two covenant classes would like to thank Ivan for his leadership and teaching of this wonderful and spiritual journey. Talk to anyone who attended and they will verify this was time well spent in our walk with Christ. When this is taught again, may I suggest you start expanding your covenant with God. And please remember; this is all for God's glory. AMEN & AMEN! Below is a covenant prayer I wrote from the Covenant teaching that was presented. Since covenant is your own personal relationship with God, may you start now making your covenant with our God. He is waiting! AMEN! Blessing & Shalom, Paul Mullican Paul's Covenant Prayer My one and only glorious and most loving God. Use me as you would any servant who loves and glorifies his GOD! You put me on this earth to serve and please you. Let your will be done through Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and your servant, Paul. My whole being, heart, soul, and mind is on this earth because you put me here for your Glory. You are the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. You placed the four corners of the earth and hung the stars. I only say this because it is true and to acknowledge your Godliness. I am not even worthy to gather up the crumbs under your table. But thank you, my blessed Lord, for forgiveness of my many sins. And may your word always be embedded in my heart and soul. You are the potter, I am the clay. Your spirit is my spirit. Mold me and make me into your image. And the moment my life comes to an end on this earth, I know this covenant will go with me to heaven; forever and ever. AMEN & AMEN! HELP BID FAREWELL TO OUR GRADUATES In the hallway outside of the youth room, there are laundry hampers for each high school graduate. As our gift to them, we all have the opportunity between now and Sunday, August 7th, to drop off items for them to take to college. Be creative, and shower them with love! Below is a suggested list of items that college students love, for all different kinds of budgets (but items shouldn t be limited to this list): Pens, pencils, paper, notebook, index cards, highlighters, desk accessories, microwavable food/ snacks, gift cards/money, laundry detergent, fabric softener, rolls of quarters, toiletries, address book, photo album, extra long sheets, air freshener, 3m strips, something homemade, any pieces of home, quick recipes, first aid kit, devotional, flash drive, iron, dvds/cds, alarm clock, extension cord/surge protector, stamps, stationery, personalized items, etc. If you give to one graduate, we ask that you give to all. Thank you for helping us share {and evenly disperse} the love! BIG THANKS to all who helped make Graduation Sunday a huge success: our speakers, our cooks, our staff, our graduates, and of course, our God. THANK YOU ALL! -Love, Emily
