6 Since everyone else is writing about this, I figured I d better get on board. It s about 47-year-old Susan Boyle, who walked on stage on Britain s Got Talent. Susan was of average appearance, and all three judges on the show, as well as the audience, mentally and visibly wrote Susan off even before she started to sing. Then, she started to sing. She sang I Dreamed a Dream from Les Misérables. Everyone was amazed and soon realized what a huge mistake they made in pre-judging her. Soon, they were all on their feet applauding this amazing singer. Most times on the show they had expected people to sing according to their preconceived opinions. Now, her story has captured the hearts of those all over the world. I was also reminded of one of my favorites, Gomer Pyle, the gas station attendant played by Jim Nabors, on The Andy Griffith Show. A spin-off show puts him in the Marines where his countrified, backward nature served as the keystone for the show's humor. And yet, Surprise, surprise, surprise!" He had a golden baritone voice that was truly amazing. We learn from all this that as followers of Christ we should never put anyone in a preconceived mold. Though we worship outward physical beauty in our society, we lose sight that inward beauty is a far greater indication of the person. And especially, the church should never be a place where dreams are killed; only where they are realized and nurtured, no matter how the person is perceived. We cannot assume we know someone or what they are like based on appearances. It s what they think, it s the way they are, that matters. After all, non-biblical descriptions of the Apostle Paul say his physical appearance was as a man of little stature, bald, crooked in the legs, a good state of body with eyebrows joining, and nose somewhat hooked... In spite of his appearance, he became the writer of much of the New Testament, a leader in the early church and a model Christian for us today. So, keep yourself open to others and base your thoughts on what they do rather than your preconceived ideas. You may be surprised. Keith OUR CHURCH FAMILY.. Sympathy: We express our Christian love and sympathy to Sherry Armstrong in the death of her father, Cecil Foushee, on May 15. Jason Bourne Melvin, son of Eric and Kristin Melvin, received the Sacrament of Baptism on Sunday, May 17. JOB LOSS SUPPORT GROUP MEETS WEEKLY: A support group for those who have lost their jobs and those who are employed in an unstable economy is meeting every Tuesday at 7 pm in the church parlor. WORSHIP TIME CHANGE FOR MAY 31 On Sunday, May 31, we are asking our church family to combine and come together for one of the most important days in the life of the church. It s the day when our sixteen youth from the 2009 Confirmation Class will make their commitments to Christ and His Church. Because of the large number in the class this year, the Worship Committee has decided to hold one service at 10:00 a.m. (will be traditional) with Sunday School starting at 8:45 a.m. With sixteen confirmands, it will take time, more than we would have in a normal service time, thus the service may last until 11:15 a.m. There will be a reception for the confirmands after the service in the west wing lobby. We know this change is different from the usual and may be inconvenient for some, but we earnestly ask your support, understanding the eternal significance of that day and that our youth are more important than the worship times. Thank you in advance for your support of these young people.

7 Join us for our first Family Movie Night of the year on Friday, May 22nd, at 7 pm in the youth rooms. The movie is free, so come and enjoy it as we celebrate Christian Home Month in fellowship together. The night s feature is the movie Horton Hears A Who. Popcorn and drinks will be provided for donations only. MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY, MAY 25, 2009 Lewisville American Legion Post 522 will hold its annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Shallowford Square on Monday, May 25: º am: Military vehicles and helicopter on display; music by Ricky Gibson; º 11 am: Memorial Day Ceremony with guest speakers. 8 WELCOME, NEW MEMBERS! Recently we have welcomed several new members into our church fellowship: º Ashley Gwynn comes to us by transfer from the Arapahoe UM Church in Arapahoe, NC. Her son, Xander, is a part of our 2009 Confirmation Class. º Gwen Horn comes to us by transfer from First UM Church in Mocksville. Her daughter, Joyner, is a part of our 2009 Confirmation Class. º Ron and Donna Tickle come to us by transfer from Union Hills Friends Church and a UM Church in Maryland. They have two young adult children, Chase and Kedin. THANKS to everyone who participated in the Festival of Friends Dinner in April. The Circle of Concern was able to donate $550 to the Building Fund and $550 to the Parsonage Fund due to the generosity of others. FLOOD BUCKETS: With tornado season here, let s remember our on-going Flood Bucket Fund. To contribute, make checks payable to Lewisville UMC and put Flood Buckets on the notation line. ANNUAL CONFERENCE IS JUNE The Western North Carolina Annual Conference meets Thursday through Sunday, June 11-14, at Lake Junaluska. Our church delegate is Sue Darby. Going as District Delegates are Harriet Binkley, Dean Norman, Mae Norman, and Kevin Hayes. Other delegates are Becky Bingham (Diaconal Minister) and Clergy delegates: Keith Bingham and Tom Lee. Annual Conference meets annually to review the work of our WNCC Annual Conference and its 1,124 churches. The conference sets the program and ministry of the Annual Conference for the next year and appoints Pastors to local churches. Many decisions are made at Annual Conference that will affect our church, so be in prayer for Annual Conference. CHURCH-WIDE WORK DAY SET FOR JUNE 13 The UM Men are sponsoring a church-wide work day on Saturday, June 28, starting at 8:00 a.m. All persons are welcome to come and help make our church grounds more beautiful. This is a good opportunity for scouts and students who need community service hours.

9 REMEMBER THE CHURCH THIS SUMMER Last year we were encouraged to do it differently. Traditionally regular church giving drops significantly during the summer months and that creates a difficult challenge for the church. Our monthly expenses do not change in the summer. Last summer our church responded and we did well. So we are reminded that as we enjoy our summer months, let s not forget the ongoing ministry of Lewisville UM Church. SAVE THE DATE FOR SERVANT DAY The Mission Committee s 2009 church-wide Servant Day will be Saturday, October 17. This is when we ask you to set aside a day to help and serve others. We will arrange various places of service to go and help out. We will gather that morning, go to various places to work, and then return to the church for a luncheon. Last year we had about 80 persons serving. Plan to join us this year. CLUB 45 For current 4th and 5th grade students. Coming to LUMC on June 18 from 6:30-8:00 pm in Asbury Hall. This night will be full of games and fellowship. Don t miss out on this new event for our 4th and 5th grade students! See you there! LEWISVILLE IS A STEPHEN MINISTRY CHURCH Stephen Ministers are trained lay care-givers who provide emotional and spiritual care to persons who are experiencing difficulties in their lives hospitalization, loss of a loved one, loss of job, or any other crisis situation. This is care in addition to the care the pastor gives. If you are interested in having a Stephen Minister, fill out one of the slips in the pew rack and put it in the offering plate or hand it to the minister or one of the Stephen Leaders, Becky Bingham or Tom Lee. LUMC VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL June 22-25, am 12 noon This year at Vacation Bible School we will learn to serve family, serve friends, serve community, and serve Jesus. Our children will learn the challenges and joys of working together to serve others. Our mission emphasis will be The Children s Home, which turns 100 years old this year. In order to have a successful VBS we need many volunteers! Join the children in experiencing the joy and satisfaction of serving others by signing up as a volunteer! If you are interested in serving at VBS, please fill out the form below and return it to the church office or place it in the offering plate. Questions?
