LEWISVILLE IS A STEPHEN MINISTRY CHURCH Stephen Ministers are trained lay care-givers who provide emotional and spiritual care to persons who are experiencing difficulties in their lives hospitalization, loss of a loved one, loss of job, or any other crisis situation. This is care in addition to the care the pastor gives. If you are interested in having a Stephen Minister, fill out one of the slips in the pew rack and put it in the offering plate or hand it to the minister or one of the Stephen Leaders, Becky Bingham or Tom Lee. MEALS ON WHEELS NEEDS DRIVERS! A hot meal. A thank you hug. That s what it s all about for the people who deliver meals to our community s elderly in need. Right now the Meals-on-Wheels program of Senior Services needs 100 more volunteers in the next 100 days. Please give us a call if you can spare about an hour and a half, one day a week or one day a month to deliver hot meals to homebound seniors. There s someone out there waiting to give you a hug. To sign up or get more information, please call Leslie Smith at

6 From time to time I find a bird s nest in a tree. It s amazing to know how birds work so hard to build a nest for their young. After construction, the eggs are laid, protected, hatched, fed and cared for by the parents. Every ounce of the adults' energy is devoted, not to their own comfort and feeding, but to the survival of their young. Robert Schnase writes, The notion of building nests is often used as a metaphor to describe people successfully providing for their own comforts. If someone arrives at a career position of some ease and security, friends say, You've built yourself quite a nest for yourself here! When we are comfortable, secure, and feel at home in our workplace or living area, we talk about the space being our own little nest. The word nest often connotes shelter, coziness, homelike, comfortable. In actual fact, the nests which birds build are not for the birds who build them, but for their young, for the next generation. The hours of carrying straw, sticks, and mud, the days of defensive watchfulness, and the weeks of endless feeding are all for the benefit of the new ones, the young, the future. Now consider "nests" we build in our churches. The buildings, programs, ministries, job descriptions, and services we build - are they for our own comfort and coziness? Or are they to further the faith and provide for future generations? Does our giving serve us and our needs or serve God by serving the mission of the church to reach new people? Here at Lewisville UMC, we seek to serve those who are already a part of our church as well as those who are outside our church as well. We ask questions of ourselves about what will feed, nourish and help those outside the church or those new to the faith. And the budding faith of young people requires our committed attention, extra care and support. For those who practice Extravagant Generosity, the nests we build are not for ourselves, they are for the next generation, those new to the faith, the future of the body of Christ. Jesus said, I came not to be served, but to serve. LUMC is a generous church that serves not herself, but our community, our church family, children and youth. Follow Jesus example, be generous in spirit and seek to serve, not be served. Keith OUR CHURCH FAMILY.. SYMPATHY: We express our Christian love and sympathy to.. º Robbie and Erika Jester in the death of Robbie s grandfather, Martin Jester, Sr., on September 25; º Beryl Moser in the death of her brother, Frank Graham, of Winston-Salem on September 28; º Betty Leslie in the death of her uncle, Ray Snyder, of Roanoke, VA on September 28; º Christy, Matt, Macey and Brett Wiseman in the death of Christy s grandfather, Leo Harrell, on October 3. NEWCOMER ORIENTATION We will be offering a two-week class during the Sunday School time (9:45 am) in the Fellowship Hall on Sundays, October 16 and 23. The class will discuss the United Methodist Church in general (beliefs, history, organization) and LUMC in particular (history, organization, programs and ministries). Open to all interested. This class is not a requirement before a person joins our church, but helps all become more acquainted with Lewisville UMC. Even good for long-time members to learn more about the United Methodist Church.

7 ATTENTION, METHODIST MEN! The Methodist Men will have their monthly breakfast meeting on Sunday, October 9, at 7:30 am in Asbury Hall. All men are invited. MANDATORY ACOLYTE TRAINING Sunday, October 9 3 pm in the sanctuary I am ready to begin work on the picnic shelter and have set up the following work days for my Eagle Scout Project: Saturday, October 15, from 9 am to 5 pm and Saturday, November 5, from 8 am-4 pm. (Please note: the second workday, Nov. 5, was previously set for Oct. 29 but has been changed to Nov. 5.) Any Boy Scouts who would like to come work may earn service hours. I also need some adults with pickup trucks and power tools. Please call me for further information and to sign up at (home) and (cell). Thank you for your continued help and support in this endeavor. Thank you, Walt Williams God is doing exciting things at LUMC and that s something to celebrate and support. Each year during October, our church has a time of special emphasis on stewardship and our key word is generosity. Our theme for this year s emphasis is Extravagant Generosity: The Heart of Giving. Here s what to expect. Our active members will receive weekly mailings that will include a Heart Card. The Heart Card asks you to think about particular things about our church: what you love about our church; who in the church has made a difference in your spiritual life; your hopes for our church. Heart Cards are brought to church with you on Sundays and placed on a big board in the West Wing lobby to share with all. Special Heart Cards for children and youth will be available during Sunday School and both worship services. The week of October 24 th, the letter will include a 2012 Estimate of Giving brochure. Commitment Sunday, when we present our Estimate of Giving brochures to God, will be Sunday, October 30, at both worship services. Our theme talks about generosity, a quality that we respect when we see it in others and one that Christians seek in their own lives. The opposite of generosity is selfishness, self-centeredness, greed, and selfabsorption. We never describe people as generous who keep everything for themselves and only serve themselves. Generosity focuses on the spiritual qualities of the giver, derived from the generosity of God. God has been abundantly generous to us, so let s consider this month the spirit of generosity in our own lives.

The World Thank Offering is an opportunity to respond to God s abundance and grace with spontaneous gifts of gratitude. Through Thank Offering contributions, UMW mission projects are supported in all 50 states and in almost 100 countries, and even right here in Forsyth County. These projects vary from support to schools, hospitals and clinics, day care centers and homes for senior citizens to educational training courses to prevent soil erosion, leadership development, sewing and nutritional courses, and medical training. The first Thank Offering was observed in Lansing, MI, due to the inspiration of Mrs. H. E. Taylor 130 years ago. In 1881 Mrs. Taylor recorded this account: " I had just sold dried apples and had a $5 gold piece. I cried aloud, What shall I render unto the Lord for all his benefits? A voice said, You can make a Thank Offering. At once I thought of the gold piece and said, Yes, Lord! I can and I will. "I left my work - not the poetic kind, but the washtub-and told my husband that the Lord had given me a wonderful thought, and I was going to write Mrs. Lathrop, our district Corresponding Secretary, and tell her about Thank Offering. Step by step our women were guided to make a Thank Offering." The World Thank Offering was not thought out; it was given. At first each woman was asked to give two cents a week. Last year the amount given through the Thank Offering from all UMW across the world was around one million dollars. This beautiful story of "Thanksgiving" shows what can happen when one woman responds to the still small voice. Please join us on Thursday, November 3, 6:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall for our annual World Thank Offering Meeting. The meeting is pot luck and all are asked to bring a dish. The meeting will be hosted by the Melba Forbis Friendship Circle. Angela Davis, our Education and Interpretation Coordinator, will present our program and it s sure to be exciting and uplifting! You don t have to be a member of a circle to attend, all are welcome!
