STEWARDSHIP CORNER Through Baptism, God has made us His own. At that point, we began our spiritual journeys to become the stewards God has called us to be. We most often think of stewardship as something we do, and certainly we are to do acts of stewardship, but first we must dedicate ourselves to being stewards of all God's good and gracious gifts. LEWISVILLE IS A STEPHEN MINISTRY CHURCH Stephen Ministers are trained lay care-givers who provide emotional and spiritual care to persons who are experiencing difficulties in their lives hospitalization, loss of a loved one, loss of job, or any other crisis situation. This is care in addition to the care the pastor gives. If you are interested in having a Stephen Minister, fill out one of the slips in the pew rack and put it in the offering plate or hand it to the minister or one of the Stephen Leaders, Becky Bingham or Tom Lee.

6 What image are you going to take away from the Beijing 2008 Olympics? Is it Michael Phelps with his history-breaking number of gold medals? Is it the first-ever gold/silver finish in women s gymnastics? Is it close calls, gut-wrenching defeats, stunning victories, or surprising winners? All these stand out, and then fade back into the haze of the entire Olympic experience. What is required of an Olympic athlete? In a nutshell, disciplined determination, absolute commitment and fixation upon one single goal. Athletes work nonstop for years. But they all know that in the end there will only be three medalists. And there will only be one gold medal winner. Here is what is so amazing to me, and maybe the most lasting image of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Even though they know they may never win a medal, yet each of these unknown athletes works with the same single-minded determination, experiences the same pains, makes the same sacrifices of time and money and even family. It is this intense personal commitment, to win one thing, that enables those athletes to give it their all, every day, for years. They may not ever earn a medal, but every one of them is a winner. The Apostle Paul says to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. (Romans 12:1) Paul is calling Jesus followers to see their physical bodies as dedicated to being lifted up as an offering to God. Each one of us needs to present our physical bodies in praise and worship to God. God is in the business of living sacrifices...people who dedicate their entire beings to serving God by bringing persons into His Kingdom, bettering humanity and building a better world. Like each Olympic athlete who represents their country and wants to do their best for their country, we represent God. We are God s ambassadors. Not many of us will write best-selling books or get our names in the halls and walls of fame. But we can be just as devoted, work just as hard, and pray without ceasing, without the glory and the medals. We can be the real stars, the real Olympians. Keith OUR CHURCH FAMILY.. Sympathy: We express our Christian love and sympathy to Levonda Craft and the Craft Family in the death of Don Craft, Jr., who passed away on August 21. GRANDPARENTS DAY IS SEPTEMBER 7 Grandparents Day is Sunday, September 7. Grandparents will be recognized at both services. Bring your grandparents for this special day. PATHWAYS STUDY GROUP The Pathways Study Group will start up again on Tuesday, September 9, and continue each Tuesday morning from 10:00-11:00 a.m. The group is OPEN to all available at that time. Starting September 9, the group will start with a detailed study on Developing A More Meaningful Prayer Life. Taught by Pastor Keith, the study will cover every aspect of prayer with the goal of our having a more meaningful prayer life. We have a lot of questions about prayer and we will seek to explore each one in this study. Come and join us. We meet in the Yokefellow Classroom.

These building teams will go to countries like Costa Rica, Guatemala, Jamaica, Honduras, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, and well as to Palestine/Israel, Alaska, Armenia, Bolivia, and Liberia. Teams will work on various building projects like sanctuaries, chapels, multi-purpose buildings, schools, etc. Cost varies from $1,200 to $3,500. If interested, see our Pastor for more details and information. You can also go to for information. Teams get filled up fast, so act soon. It s a great opportunity. USED CELL PHONE COLLECTION AND FUNDRAISER LUMC is participating in a cell phone fund-raising drive. There is nothing for you to buy or sell to participate. We simply ask that you donate your extra inactive cell phones to our drive. No chargers or accessories are needed. Most households have 5 to 6 unused cell phones just sitting in drawers. Please put these phones to good use. They will raise needed funds and 100% of the proceeds will go directly to our church Building Fund. This drive will benefit our church and the environment by keeping the harmful materials the phones contain out of our landfills (lead, arsenic, beryllium, etc.). To make it even easier, just bring the cell phones with their batteries to church AND DROP IN A SPECIAL CONTAINER located in the west wing lobby and outside the church office. FLOOD BUCKETS: With hurricane season here, let s remember our on-going Flood Bucket Fund. To contribute, make checks payable to Lewisville UMC and put Flood Buckets on the notation line. REMEMBER SERVANT DAY Servant Day is our opportunity to serve in mission work in our area. We will be sending teams to Speas Elementary, Open Arms Ministry, Bethlehem Center, The Children s Home, Crisis Control and Habitat Restore. SUPPORT THE CHILDREN S HOME The Winston-Salem District of the United Methodist Church has given all churches a challenge to respond to the Great Commission by supporting The Children s Home in Winston-Salem at 1001 Reynolda Road. The W-S District has asked each person to support this effort by giving $6.00 each. Children s Home, Inc. has cared for children, families, and individuals in need for nearly 100 years. With campuses in Winston Salem and Franklin, The Home has served Western North Carolina by being the place Where Children and Families Matter Most. In recent years, The Children s Home has undergone significant changes, including becoming licensed by the State of North Carolina as a Mental Health Residential Treatment Center. The Home is also licensed as a Mental Health Day Treatment Program and a Child Placing Agency for Family Foster Care and Therapeutic Foster Care. Most recently, The Home officially became a licensed Adoption Agency, specializing in foster-to-adopt placements. They offer residential programs as well as day centers and counseling for children and families. The Children s Home continues to reach those in need, embracing its mission to grow healthy futures for children, adults and families by ministering to the mind, body and spirit, and heeding the words of Jesus, Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these, my brethren, you did it unto me. Lewisville UMC wants to show our support by encouraging all those who are a part of our church to consider giving $6.00 each. Since not everyone may be able to give the same, if you can do more it would help us meet our goal. Truly, The Children s Home is one of our most successful ministries and deserves our support. Be sure that you clearly mark your gift The Children s Home so it can be directed to the right place. Thanks for your support.
