To Know God, and to Make Him Known September 2018 Blessing of the Village by Marty Johnson On Sunday morning, September 16, we will have a blessing of the Village. Knowing that indeed it takes a village to raise a child, we chose to call our backpack blessing the Blessing of the Village. The Winstead community wants to take an opportunity to bless the backpacks of our children, as well as the children themselves, as they start a new school year. With the idea it takes a village to raise and to teach our children, we also want give a blessing to all the educators; teachers, counselors, librarians, mentors, volunteers, everyone who works with Hand in Hand and Seeds of Hope at Vick Elementary, as well as others at all of our schools. We're asking all of our young people and all of our educators, including college and secondary schools, to come forward so that we can see what a wonderful community and village we have and ask God s blessing on them. Please make sure that your child brings his or her backpack so we can bless the backpacks. A tag with a bible verse and fish shape carabiner will be placed on the backpacks. We will also pray and ask God s blessing on all those who are a part of that wonderful village that God uses to teach and to bless our children and students, young and not so young. Please mark September 16 on your calendar and come be a part of blessing those who teach and lead our children in so many ways.

Pastor s Musings Pastor George Loveland pastor@winsteadumc.org I hope you ve had time to drive by 1851 Airport Boulevard for a look at what s going on at our new church property. I can only describe it as a glorious mess! The crosses are flanked by earth movers, there are piles of dirt here and there, and there is a spot cleared where the first phase of the building project-- our Family Kitchen/ Peanut Facility--will stand. But it s all glorious because it means we re moving along with a dream that so many have worked faithfully on for so long. But while new buildings are exciting, they are not, of course, church. Colossians 1: reminds us of the genesis and foundation of church, and all its buildings, worship services, Sunday schools, and committees. And [Jesus Christ] is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. And Jesus Christ has been the head of the body of Winstead United Methodist Church from the beginning. Our official church history describes it this way: On July 21, 1949 a group of ten interested persons met in the home Pastor George s office hours are Monday-Thursday, 9:00 am - noon. He is also available for counseling or consultation by appointment: george.loveland@nccumc.org Cell phone: Pastor George will be out of the country from August 29 through September 8. The Emergency Pastor on Call during his absence is Rev. Bob Bergland of First United Methodist Church, Wilson: rbergland@nccumc.org (252) of Mr. and Mrs. D.A. Baker for a prayer service. It was at this meeting that Miss Zell Winstead gave fifty dollars which was used to purchase twenty-five Cokesbury Worship Hymnals and other incidentals. These cottage prayer services continued and as the weeks passed more persons became interested in the project. It was at the seventh meeting, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Rosser, that plans were made to clear the lot for a building. It was not when the lot was cleared, and it was not when the hymnals were purchased that Winstead became a church. The seeds of Winstead were planted when this small group of faithful disciples met and prayed together, and acknowledged that Jesus Christ alone is the head of the body, the church. And the original building, the Sunday school wing, Hood Hall, our sanctuary, and now our new facilities on Airport Boulevard are church because He is the head of the body, the church. Praise God! 2

Connecting W.A.M. by Sandy Pittman I am so excited to share with you a new program ~ W.A.M. (Worship and Music). This program will be offered on Sunday nights in connection with our new Church Family Night. The purpose of W.A.M. is to provide children an opportunity to learn more about Jesus love for them, learn more about the Bible and the wonderful stories found within the pages, and prepare creative ways to share the Gospel Message through song and drama. Each week, the children will immediately participate in some type of interactive activities (between 6:45-7 pm). The activities include, but are not limited to, movement and rhythm, hand chimes, children s bells and memory moments. After all children are in place (7 pm), they will sing and learn creative ways to share those lessons. For the season, we will be learning about the parables of Jesus. The children will learn about these wonderful, timeless stories of Jesus through memorizing key verses (age appropriate), acting out the stories, and singing songs that reinforce the concept for that parable. At the end of this season, the children will celebrate all that they have learned by presenting a musical called Parabalooza on Sunday, March 31 during the 11:00 worship time. This is an interactive musical that resembles a game show. There will be something for everyone in this presentation. This is something that you don t want to miss. Again, I am very excited about the programming that we are now offering the children of Winstead United Methodist Church. If you have any questions please contact one of our core W.A.M. team members: Sandy Pittman - Minister of Music Becky Holland - Children s Music Director Debbie Williams - Drama and Movement Director Priscilla Morello, Executive Director of Seeds of Hope Wilson, and Pastor George Loveland accept a certificate of appreciation for our sponsorship of the Latino Growers Academy September

Serve Hand in Hand News By Sanda Hight Our Church's Hand in Hand Ministry will continue for the school year. On Thursday, August 9, Priscilla Morello, Sanda Hight and Pastor George Loveland met with Dr. Walthall, principal at Vick Elementary School, to plan Hand in Hand activities for the coming school year. Dr. Walthall requested that we continue with the activities that we provided during the last school year. The Hand in Hand Committee and others provided a back-to-school breakfast for the Vick staff on Monday, August 13, the first day that the staff reported for school this year. Thanks to all who provided food for the breakfast and for all who helped set up the meal and greet the Vick staff. Those from our church who attended the breakfast and provided food were Peggie Shultz, Priscilla Morello, Edwina Kaeser, Mary Ellen Bass, Linda Lane, Pastor George Loveland, and Sanda Hight Others who helped by providing food were Claudine Perkins, Peggy Wilson, and Barbara Whaley. Our school supplies drive for the students and teachers at Vick is under way. Items needed this year are as follows: # 2 pencils, notebook paper, sewn composition notebooks, erasers, Kleenex, colored pencils, crayons, dry-erase markers, mechanical pencils, glue sticks, blocks (ABCs, 123s), washable markers, copy paper, and hand sanitizer. Please do not take Clorox wipes this year. ALL ITEMS FOR THE SCHOOL SUPPLIES DRIVE MAY BE PLACED IN THE DES- IGNATED BIN IN THE NARTHEX. We will have Prayer Partners this year, but we are asking the whole congregation to participate by signing cards for the staff, which will be provided for signing on the first Sunday of each month starting in September at the Sunday School assembly and after the worship service in the Narthex. We would like for lots of people to sign cards, write greetings for the staff, and remember to pray for the staff and students at Vick and for academic success for this school year. Please listen for future announcements about Classroom Buddies and other ways to participate in our Hand in Hand Ministry as the school year continues. The next Hand in Hand meeting will be on Tuesday, September 4 at 7:00 in the Choir Room. Seeds of Hope by Priscilla Morello Seeds of Hope Wilson had an amazing first year of the After School Program at Seeds of Hope House (SOHH). Vick Elementary had vastly improved End of Grade scores this year and we would like to think that we played a small part in that as we served and taught third grade students. I was at Vick s open house this week and students from last year were asking if they could be part of our program again this year. But they are now fourth graders and our program will be for 20 third graders this year. (Continued on page 7) 6

Get Involved Seeds of Hope (cont d) (Continued from page 6) The SPOT helped our program with teachers and financial support and they were all set to do even more this year but they had a temporary set-back in they did not receive a much coveted grant for this school year. You can help Seeds of Hope Wilson by supporting our annual Family Feud for Families fundraiser to be held on Thursday, September 20, 2018 at 7:00 pm at the SURGE Center, 910 Raleigh Rd. Pkwy. Please become part of the awesome audience for this event by purchasing tickets to attend. See Fred, Linda Lane, Priscilla, or Pastor George for tickets. Still $8.00 a person. Or, please consider sponsoring this once-a-year fundraiser. Gold Sponsorship--$500, Silver Sponsorship--$250, or Bronze Sponsorship--$100. We did not hold our 360 Campaign this past year in which we ask families to pledge $360 for the year, so we are counting on folks to invest in the work we are doing through Family Feud sponsorships. Thanks for your prayers and support, United Methodist Men By Fred Hight The United Methodist Men (UMM) met on August 12 for their first meeting since June. We will have a potato and salad bar lunch on Sunday, October 14. This event has been on the calendar for quite some time. The fundraiser goes to benefit La Estrella, and we will have a representative from La Estrella to be with us that day. Duke Day will be Saturday, October 20. Duke will play Virginia, and the cost is $25 per person. We will provide scholarships for people who need it. Our next breakfast meeting will be on Sunday, September 9 at 7:45 am. All men of the church are invited. There will be a golf outing at the Sunday School Picnic on September 9. Greens fees will be $20 per person. The first tee time will be 1:00 or 1:30 with 4 or 5 different groups. We encourage everyone to participate. Agape Boxes Still Needed By Cissy Parks Several Agape boxes have been completed but lack the $5.00 shipping fee. If you would like to donate $5.00 to help with this, it would be greatly appreciated. We still have some plastic boxes that need to be filled. Pick one up from the Narthex along with a list of required items. These are due by October 1. Thanks so much for your help with this wonderful project. September
