Have you ever wondered why the world is so messed up? Oh it may be the humans who live here! The world was made perfect by God Himself and it was He that gave the opportunity for free will to all. Wow! He gave us a choice to live for Him or die for self. It sounds easy but it is so hard to do, is it not? Even in this madness, I have seen good things in the world. Beautiful, flowing rivers, streams, oceans, lakes, our beautiful mountains, and people. WOW! What a world AMEN! As the song writer said, When I think of the goodness of Jesus and all He has done for me, my soul cries out hallelujah I thank God for saving me. It is not just me, it is an opportunity for all to be saved. Hear this, IT IS FOR ALL, NO EXCEPTIONS! The other day I was listening to a preacher Tony Evan who stated: Faith is acting like, is so even when it is not so, so that it might be so, simply because God said so! Is that not good news? Last week I was looking out a window at a bird feeder. I saw a collaboration of birds. I noticed a Cardinal, The red one especially He is a handsome bird, stands out and is known for showing off to the grey birds. We have people like that just out there to show off. The Cardinal likes crowds always bunching up together, don t really want the other birds around him. What kind of bird are you? Then I saw the doves-they coo most of the time and causing his kind to come around, like some of us following what sounds good, can talk another to do whatever we want with our cooing sounds. Then I saw the little sparrow. They are just all over the place. They even sit to eat and walk like some of us just sitting around. We cannot forget the mocking bird-they have no personal testimony like us just do what we see and done. Amen! There is the chicken, never flies unless they are scared. Always looking down and pecking. They will ingest almost anything and just pecking and pecking. Are there any chickens among us? Then there is the hummingbird-really fast, over here, over there, they are everywhere. I call them the church hoppers going from one place to another. You just can t keep up with them. What we need is to learn to be like the eagle. Proud, stead fast, unmovable, knows what they want. The eagle is knowns to always look to the sky, always flying high, always protecting its family, always committed to soaring high and looking out for danger. We need to be like an eagle, always soaring high, committed for the highest calling. When the eagle feels danger, it goes high, collects itself, and continues its job. We need to learn to go high sometimes and regroup and continue our work in our valleys. Operation Christmas Child The Mission Committee thanks you for participating in the Christmas in July Shoebox project. The Shoebox gifts were dedicated during the Worship Service on Sunday, August 12. As of that date, about 140 shoebox gifts had been returned. If you are still working on gifts, you may return them to the Narthex on Sunday mornings or leave them in the Church Office, (as soon as possible). Thank you for caring and helping spread God s love to children. Mission 100 Gifts to Mission 100 for this quarter will go to UMCOR. These gifts will be used to assist Greensboro residents with rebuilding after the April tornado. Mark you offering envelop for Mission 100 or just list the donation under benevolences. God s Helping Hands Food Pantry We have the opportunity to help those in need of food by bringing non-perishable food items and placing them in the large box in the Narthex. You may do this at any time, but we especially encourage you to bring food the first Sunday of each month. Thank you for helping others. Weaver House You are invited to help serve a meal to the homeless at Greensboro Urban Ministry on Thursday, September 13. Sign up on the board in the Narthex on Sunday, September 9.

3 The Informer Volume 46 Issue 9 Page 3 NURTURE Next Meeting Tuesday September 11 at 11:30 am Please join us in September for our next meeting. All are invited to attend. UMW Reading Together Book Club 2018 is a time to move forward with the UMW Reading Together Book Club. In 2017, 39 folks participated and 24 will received certificates at a special get together. Mark your calendars for the last Tuesday in each month from January to October at 10:00 am in the Spillman Room: September 25 and October 30. Reading forms need to be turned in November 15 so our UMW President can forward the info. For those interested in purchasing a book for the library or donating money, please talk with Joy Ellison at Circles are encouraged to contribute to this worthwhile UMW program. Peace in Christ, Joy Ellison, UMW Resource Program New Bible Study A new Bible Study is held each Thursday at 10 am in the Spillman Room. Everyone is welcome! It is based on the movie War Room. Come join us for a wonderful study each week. Note of Thanks... St. John s Friends, I am very appreciative on the many beautiful cards, calls, and especially your prayers during my illness. My heartfelt thanks for your kindnesses. I am doing better. Hope to be back in church soon! Please assist the Circle of Love provide school supplies for the underprivileged students at Hunter School. If you prefer to make a monetary contribution, write a check to St. John s and write Hunter School on your envelope. Financial News Update The five Sundays plus walk up in July were very helpful for our budget offerings. Please see the financial statement on page 6. For 2018, our receipts, $123,939, were just a little below our expenses, $125,200. THANKS!! However our August income has been unusually low. 4 Page 4 The Informer Volume 46 Issue 9 YOUTH, YOUNG ADULT & CHILDREN NEWS! Can you believe it? It's September and fall already! What happens in Fall? I'm glad you asked! It's time for the Annual Youth BBQ Fundraiser! I'm not going to write much this month but let the flyer below do all my talking. Get those orders in for our delicious BBQ. We will also have a hot dog lunch with yummy goodies to get the day started. Then you can venture back to the church for your BBQ plate and take a pound or 2 or 5 home with you. Shoulders freeze well and can be left whole or can be chopped or pulled whichever you prefer. See one of the youth families or Garry and Lisa Woodard. This is our major fundraiser for the year and it s also a lot of fun and great food! See you on the 15th and let's get those order forms filled out! 5 The Informer Volume 46 Issue 9 Page 5 UMW NEWS It was good to get together at circle after a month off. The Hannah s Haven covered dish dinner Monday, August 13 was inspirational. Thanks to Pat Drewery and helpers for the hard work putting it together. And to Lloyd Eubanks for the music. It was great! Thank you to those who helped with the building Clean Up project. Our church will look better for the up-coming events when our friends from other churches will be here. Saturday, September 8 is the UMW District Celebration: The Power of Bold Faith, Hope and Love in Action. Registration is 9:00 in the Fellowship Hall. A light continental breakfast will be served. Thanks to Carol Humble and the ladies who are preparing it. Reports will be available for unit Presidents. The celebration will begin at 10:00 in the sanctuary. Afterwards we will have a Walk for Missions around the building. I appreciate the ladies who signed up to be here and host this event. Because of Labor Day: #1 will meet second Monday, September 10 at 10:00. #2 will meet the usual time Tuesday, September 4, at 10:00. #3 will meet Tuesday, September 4, at 7:00. Monday, September 10 there will be an Executive Committee meeting at 6:30 and Gathering at 7:00. This will be a business meeting and a speaker, Chrissy Singleton from IRC. Please be here for this interesting meeting. Circle #3 will serve the UM Men s dinner on Thursday, September 27. I know you are preparing for the Bazaar Saturday, October 13. See Carol Humble to volunteer. We look forward to a day of work and fellowship with everyone who helps make this mission project successful, fun and helpful for our neighbors. The proceeds will go to Out of the Garden project to feed children and their families and to Habitat to help Greensboro tornado victims. You are busy servants for our church and our God. Becky Smith, UMW President UMW BAZAAR October 13, :00-1:30 How times flies! It is already September, so next month is our annual Bazaar to benefit mission projects. The proceeds this year will go to Habitat for Humanity tornado relief efforts here in Greensboro and Out of the Garden (which provides food to students and their families). Your help is needed to make this a successful event. Items needed are as follows: baked goods, crafts, plants, home canned jellies, pickles, etc., items for the silent auction and jar raffle. Also, gift cards go well in the Silent Auction. Ask your favorite merchant for a donation. As always, the day will begin with breakfast and lunch will follow, as the day goes on. YARD SALE Pass the word to friends and neighbors who might be interested in setting up a yard sale area. There will be no charge, (but church tables will not be available), so participates will need to set up their own displays. Please call Carol Humble or the Church office, to let us know if you plan to be part of the yard sale. If you have questions or wish to volunteer in any way, contact Carol Humble.
