My family and I want to thank everyone for their visits, texts, Facebook messages, phone calls, food, cards and memorial gifts following Hubert s death. Thanks also, to all who worked to set up and clean up for the visitation and service. The caring of friends helps to make times like this bearable. Your thoughtfulness is very much appreciated. Love, Sara Grace In, Grace Out The computer acronym GIGO garbage in, garbage out describes how putting wrong code into a machine will lead to faulty output. Jesus offers a similar lesson in Matthew 15: What comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person (v. 18, ESV). GIGO works the other way, too. If we put good things (including the good news of salvation) in our hearts, Jesus goodness will shine out through our lives. And when God s grace enters and changes us, we ll also reach out and share that good news with others.

Their goal is to spread God s Love through community fellowship and activities. For more information, additional pick-up sites, or to volunteer please call Hill s Chapel UMC at

11 Pastor s Pen Do you like August? Some people love August. It's beach time! Or mountain time! They like the hot weather, the sunshine, even the afternoon thunder boomers (as we used to call them). Trips to the pool, ice cream, watermelon, there are all these things to enjoy. And, of course, playing outside! Other people, well, don't love August. Too hot, too humid, way too many bees and bugs. Too hot outside, too hot inside. And, of course, school is starting back. (Though many parents include this in why they love August!) In many ways, August is a time of transition. Vacations are over, so it's back to work until Thanksgiving. Students will be packing up and returning to college. New cars will be arriving at dealerships, Fall clothes will be out in stores, and you'll be able to buy a calendar for next year. Here at Hill s Chapel, we will be finishing up our summer youth program, Wonderful Wednesday. Bible study will be close to starting back up in September. And attendance will pick back up as summer trips give way to back to normal. But what if What if we treated every month like August? What if we regularly gave ourselves permission to sit outside with a glass of tea? What if we regularly gave ourselves permission to take a trip? What if CCC or Camp Meeting wasn't only once a year? What if VBS wasn't only a summer thing? What if we were able to make a transition in our lives and give ourselves permission to ease into God s presence? Jesus said, Take my yoke upon you, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. (Mt , NIV). The rest of the year, we are pretty good at yoking our lives to other things. The demands of work, school, family, friends, even church, can drain us of energy and take our stress levels through the roof. But did you hear the comments at the youth service after their week at CCC? More than once, it was said, It was just what I needed. Think about that: working outside in the July heat was just what someone needed. How?? Because they put on a different yoke. Instead of worrying about pleasing someone else, they were pleasing God. Instead of taking that week to work because the bills were piling up, they shared God s love with other of God s children. How can we as a church, as your church, give more opportunities for this to happen? Let me know your ideas! Maybe next August, we will have something different, a new way to enjoy the month as we love on one another. And who knows? It may be just what you needed.
