6 September is Christian Education Month at LUMC. Here s a story/parable about a wealthy family from Massachusetts who used to take a month s vacation every summer to the coast of Maine, taking their maid with them. The maid had an annual ritual at the beach. She wore an old-fashioned bathing suit, complete with a little white hat, and carried enough paraphernalia to stock Wal- Mart. She would settle herself on the beach, cover every inch of her exposed flesh and journey down to the water s edge. There she would hesitate while taking deep breaths. Slowly she would work up her courage to enter the icy-cold water. Finally, she would daintily extend one foot and lower it slowly into the water until she barely had her big toe submerged. Then she repeated the act with the other foot. Then, having satisfied her minimal urge for a swim, she would retreat to her chair and umbrella and spend the remainder of the vacation curled around a book. This maid reminds us of many Christians. They have the stuff of greatness in them, but they never really wade into the waters of Christian discipleship. Maybe a toe. Sometimes an ankle, but rarely do they become so stirred up with the spirit of God that they venture anything great for God. They re like a car whose transmission is locked in neutral. The sound of the motor is impressive. The lights and the radio work fine. The tread on their tires is brand new. The only problem is that they re not going anywhere. They settle for being nominal followers of the Master. Clarence Jordan, the great activist saint of God who inspired the musical The Cotton Patch Gospel, believed such people violated the Third Commandment, Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. He said taking the Lord s name in vain was not something you do with your lips (by uttering a profanity), but with your life. You take the name of the Lord in vain when you accept the name of Jesus Christ but don t do anything with it. Discipleship is about learning and growing in our faith. LUMC offers a variety of avenues to assist you with this, starting with Sunday School. Be a true disciple and not just a nominal follower of one who lived 2,000 years ago. Jesus is alive and wants to know you better. Pastor Keith DISTRICT LAITY AWARD RECOGNITION Charlie Mays is our 2013 Laity Service Award Recipient and will be recognized at this service on Sunday, September 29, at 2:30 p.m. at Mt. Tabor UMC. No reservations necessary. Speaker will be Shannon Sherfey, Appalachian District Lay Leader. All welcome. LUMC STEEPLE NEWS Our beautiful steeple with a new spire (the top part), remodeled base, lighting inside base, the Methodist Cross and Flame logo on the base, a cross on the top, and a carillon that will play hymns or songs (seasonal as needed) and chimes, Mon.-Sat. at 9 am, 12 noon and 6 pm and Sundays at 10:45 am, is now projected to be shipped to us on Monday, October 30.

FIFTH SUNDAY MISSIONS EMPHASIS IS SEPTEMBER 29 The third of our Fifth Sunday Missions emphases is Sunday, September 29 th. In these, our Missions Team seeks to inform LUMC of the varied outreach ministries in which we are involved. We hear a lot about The Children s Home in Winston-Salem but many are not sure about what they do. For over 100 years, The Children s Home has ministered to children and youth who are in difficult circumstances. The scope of their ministry now is broad and inspiring. Several of our older members grew up in The Children s Home. The Children s Home has two locations, the Winston-Salem main campus and the Franklin Campus in Franklin, NC. On Sunday, Sept. 29, we will be honored and privileged to welcome Maurice Ware, who is the President/CEO of The Children s Home. He will share with us at both services about what they are involved in today and how things have changed over the years. As part of our mission emphasis, we will have the opportunity to generously support their ministry to children and youth as part of the Western NC Annual Conference Children s Home Sunday. Come and learn about this exciting ministry right in our area.
