6 General Conference of The United Methodist Church 2016 Who makes decisions for The United Methodist Church if there is no one person in charge? Good question. The only body that can set official policy and speak for the denomination is the General Conference. The General Conference is an international body of nearly 1,000 delegates that meets every four years. The delegates are elected by annual conferences (at annual conference sessions) to attend General Conference. They represent all annual conferences around the world. Half of the delegates are laity (non-clergy members), half are clergy. Bishops attend the General Conference but cannot vote. Different bishops serve as presiding officers during the conference. Other bishops cannot speak unless permission is specifically granted by the delegates. During General Conference, delegates discuss and vote on petitions and resolutions proposed by individuals, agencies, annual conferences, and other groups within the denomination. These actions result in a revision of the Book of Discipline, the denomination's book of law, and Book of Resolutions, policies of the denomination on current social issues. It is at General Conference where delegates wrestle with today's issues in light of scriptural teachings and the church's understanding of that teaching. Here is where the church's official stands and church policies are made regarding such issues as human sexuality, abortion, war and peace, as well as determination of ministries and funding. General Conferences are held in years divisible by 4, such as 2008, 2012, 2016, etc. Posted on the WNCC website Posted on January 21, 2016 by mrich As we prepare for General Conference 2016, resources have been collected for all who are interested. A landing page for all things General Conference has been established on our website (There is a prominent link on the bottom left of the front page that will remain through July 2016.) General Conference is scheduled for May 10-20, 2016 in Portland, Ore. Delegates from across the world will be gathering for business, fellowship, and worship. At the link below, you can see the members of the Western North Carolina delegation: Please be in prayer for General Conference before and during their meetings. They are faced with several challenging issues and debates. The peace of the Lord be with us all!

We are currently collecting new and gently used books for children ages Collection boxes will be placed in the narthex and west wing lobby for donations until Monday, May 2. All donations are greatly appreciated and will impact the community! If you have any questions, contact Hannah Dixon at hannah.dixon@alumni.lr.edu. DO YOU HAVE A PASSION GOD IS CALLING YOU TO SHARE? Do you have a special interest, a dream to serve the church or community in a certain way, or a desire to meet with people who share similar needs and concerns? You may want to form a small group focused on developing your skills in photography, enjoying fellowship while writing cards to shut-ins, serving at a local ministry or going overseas on a mission trip, experiencing the outdoors through weekend hiking trips, meeting with and ministering to parents of young children, or something completely different -- anything involving the opportunity to live out the small group ministry's mission: to develop and deepen Christian friendships for encouragement, support, and challenge for personal and community spiritual transformation. The small groups ministry invites you to interest sessions on Sunday, June 12, after the 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. worship services. Details to follow. We'd love to have you join us to learn about small groups, how you can use your unique talents and callings, and how the small group ministry can help. We'll also share how the model we're envisioning involves deep commitment for short periods of time. Let us know if you're coming or if you have questions. Contact Emily Roach, Karen Siburt, Lu Cooper ( or lulu7ncla@gmail.com), Paula Warlick, or Julie Rains ( or jsrains@gmail.com) for more information.

11 Hey everybody! I'm Hank Rains and this summer I will be working for Carolina Cross Connection (CCC) as a Project Director. I'll be organizing projects so church teams can do home repairs for low-income families. To do this though, I need your prayers and I need to raise $1750 before I start working. If you would like to donate online, just go to If you have questions or would like to donate some other way, just me at hankrains@gmail.com. Thanks! My name is Torri Foster. I am a senior Religion and Practical Theology major at Pfeiffer University, and I will be a CCC Camp Director! I currently claim two home churches, Lewisville UMC in Lewisville and The Village Church in Misenheimer. Both have made a huge impact on who I am as a person and who I am in Christ! This will be my very first year on staff, but I was a camper for four consecutive years while at LUMC, and I always knew that I would somehow make my way back. CCC was the catalyst to how I experience Christ now, not only living authentically but worshiping Christ full of joy and wonder. After my summer at CCC, I will be going to graduate school for a Masters in Practical Theology so that I can continue to be God s hands and feet! A monetary donation to my summer here at CCC would be amazing and such a blessing. Please continue to be in prayer for me, my staff members, and our campers. Oh, and hugs work too! Thank you so much for your love, prayers, and partnerships! A part of my job is to raise money for the summer in the form of donations and partnerships. Your prayers and tax-deductible gifts will help support me this summer and further the mission of Carolina Cross Connection. Call with credit card info, send a check payable to Carolina Cross Connection, PO Box 5723, Concord, NC (include my name in the memo line), or contribute online at this link: LUMC Church Family, I d like to let you know about an amazing opportunity God has given me for this summer. I ve been selected to be part of the GoNow Initiative at The Summit Church, which I attend in Raleigh when I am at NC State. As a part of this initiative, I ll be spending the summer doing City Project where I ll have the opportunity to serve the church and global mission of God. I hope to spend two months being immersed in the local church and cities around the globe. I will travel to New York City for one week to engage Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, and Buddhists with the gospel. The culmination of this trip will be in Mumbai, India where I will have an opportunity to reach the unreached for Christ. The dates of this project are May 24-July 22. The total cost is $4900. I prayerfully ask you to consider becoming part of my support team through financial giving and prayer. If you can assist me financially, please give online at Be sure to enter my name, Logan Criss, as well as City Project for the trip name. If you prefer to give by check, it should be payable to The Summit Church. You can mail your tax-deductible gift to The Summit Church, City Project Presidential Dr, Durham, NC, For your financial privacy, the church will tell me that you have contributed, but they will not disclose the amount. Most importantly, I ask for your prayers as I prepare for this huge opportunity. If you d like to me with any questions about my trip, my is: logancriss@yahoo.com. With gratitude, Logan Criss
