6 It was a shocking experience Sunday night (Sept. 7) as the Cardiac Cats (Carolina Panthers) won the game in the last seconds. It was even more shocking in that my ICD (Implanted Cardiac Defibrillator) decided I needed a good jolt of electrical energy to keep my heart going. In seeking to let you know what has happened, here is what I know. Background: after a silent heart attack around January, 2001 (discovered six months later that June, 2001), there was a certain amount of heart damage and a blood clot in the heart. Scar tissue from the clot and the heart damage made me susceptible to a heart electrical problem called ventricular tachycardia (or v-tach). This is where the bottom part of the heart goes into an irregular, fast rhythm. Since this was a possibility, doctors implanted an ICD (Implanted Cardiac Defibrillator) in my chest in Aug The ICD acts like the paddles you see used to shock heart attack victims. Since then, things have been quiet until Sunday night, September 7, when it went off about 7:00 p.m. The ICD gave me a shock. About 20 seconds later, it did it again, only a little stronger. EMS took me to the Emergency Room where they worked to get the heart back in rhythm. The ICD shocked three more times in the ER. Finally, they got it under control using various medications and sent me to Coronary Care ICU for monitoring. Monday morning (in seeking some causation for the event) they did a heart catheterization that showed no new blockages, affirming that I did not have another heart attack. I was released from Forsyth Medical Center about 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. They still do not know what triggered the event, but have me on a medication regimen that should keep things in check. I thank you for all your prayers and support and pray that the new medication does what it should to keep the defibrillator inactive. I share this with you because, besides being your Pastor, I am prone to many of the types of issues many in our church family go through. As I pondered about the event, I share these reflections. God is good and He is with us in good times and very difficult times. Life is precious, so make each day count, seriously. Give a hug to someone you love today. Treasure each day. This cardiac event was dangerous and scary, but the ICD did what it was supposed to do and I am thankful. I confess that even as I prayed during it all, I was still anxious and quite concerned, especially after being shocked five times. But somehow I was able to find some peace, knowing that all was being done that could be done for me and that God was working in the midst of it all. Whatever happened, I was going to be ok. I was also reminded of the need for family and friends. My family was with me and even my soon to be son in law. I also heard from those in our church and other friends who called to check on me. It does help to know that people care. I also rejoice in God s healing. God gave scientists the ability to make ICD s that can save a life. It did that for me that Sunday night. God heals through research scientists, doctors, nurses and in many other ways He has chosen. But behind it all, Jesus the Great Physician is still healing as He did in the Gospels. Thanks for your prayers and support Keith Welcome, New Members! Welcome to Brad and Barbara McBride who joined our church on Sunday, September 7. They have two sons, Caleb and Joshua. Their address is 5535 Woodspring Drive, Winston-Salem, NC Phone number is We are happy to have them in our church family.

The trust is to be used only for maintenance on church- owned property and only the interest on the fund is available for distribution. What this means is the church family of Lewisville UMC already has this fund available to any who would like to include in their estate/will planning, a charitable gift that will become a living memorial and help with the future needs of the church. Lewisville UMC then asks that you consider your church in your will and estate planning. If you need to know more, contact the Church Trustees.

John and Tara Stebbins are the proud grandparents and Bob and Donna Stebbins are the proud great-grandparents. º Clayton and Abby Allen on the birth of a daughter, Chloe Ruth, on September 10. Chloe has a sister, Jessie, and two brothers, Alex and Hank. LEWISVILLE IS A STEPHEN MINISTRY CHURCH Stephen Ministers are trained lay care-givers who provide emotional and spiritual care to persons who are experiencing difficulties in their lives hospitalization, loss of a loved one, loss of job, or any other crisis situation. This is care in addition to the care the pastor gives. If you are interested in having a Stephen Minister, fill out one of the slips in the pew rack and put it in the offering plate or hand it to the minister or one of the Stephen Leaders, Becky Bingham or Tom Lee. SUPPORT THE CHILDREN S HOME The Winston-Salem District of the United Methodist Church has given all churches a challenge to respond to the Great Commission by supporting The Children s Home in Winston-Salem at 1001 Reynolda Road. The W-S District has asked each person to support this effort by giving $6.00 each. Children s Home, Inc. has cared for children, families, and individuals in need for nearly 100 years. With campuses in Winston Salem and Franklin, The Home has served Western North Carolina by being the place Where Children and Families Matter Most. In recent years, The Children s Home has undergone significant changes, including becoming licensed by the State of North Carolina as a Mental Health Residential Treatment Center. The Home is also licensed as a Mental Health Day Treatment Program and a Child Placing Agency for Family Foster Care and Therapeutic Foster Care. Most recently, The Home officially became a licensed Adoption Agency, specializing in foster-to-adopt placements. They offer residential programs as well as day centers and counseling for children and families. The Children s Home continues to reach those in need, embracing its mission to grow healthy futures for children, adults and families by ministering to the mind, body and spirit, and heeding the words of Jesus, Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these, my brethren, you did it unto me. Lewisville UMC wants to show our support by encouraging all those who are a part of our church to consider giving $6.00 each. Since not everyone may be able to give the same, if you can do more it would help us meet our goal. Truly, The Children s Home is one of our most successful ministries and deserves our support. Be sure that you clearly mark your gift The Children s Home so it can be directed to the right place. Thanks for your support.
