6 May is a month full of joyful and exciting things at LUMC. It is Christian Home Month and we have a lot of things going on to celebrate that theme throughout the month. We ll have our first church-wide picnic/ cookout in a long time and that s very exciting. I truly hope you will join your church family (see other article). It is also a month when our Confirmation Class makes their own personal commitment to Jesus Christ. This is a glorious and high point of the year. Support these young people, be present and thank God for them. (see other article) We also have Mother s Day on May 13. My mother has enjoyed heaven since She was a great influence in my life and she still inspires me today. As you probably know, I have two daughters. Jennifer is expecting her second son in May and the excitement of a new life in God s world is so amazing. When my other daughter Kara was almost 13, she entered a local Mother s Day contest (not sure if through the school or the local newspaper), but her entry ended up being published in the newspaper. I share it with you because it expresses some thoughts that can enrich us this Mother s Day. Here s what she wrote as an introduction: As I am on my way to being thirteen, I realize how much my mother gave me. To express what my mother gave me, I wrote a poem called.. MY MOTHER GAVE ME. My mother gave me life, So that I might live. My mother gave me love, So that I might love. My mother gave me kindness, So that I might be kind. My mother gave me fairness, So that I might be fair. My mother gave me help, So that I could help others. My mother gave, So that I might give. by Kara Bingham Hope to see you at church on Sunday. Pastor Keith HELP! In the 1980s a group from this church began a weekly trip to Vienna Village for a singa-long. The purpose is to provide entertainment, but it also involves interacting with the residents. Those who first went each Thursday are mostly gone and there is a need for others to take up the reins. This is a vital mission work of our church, joined by others who came to be a part of the group by contact with the LUMC volunteers. It needs the input of new blood. If you can spare an hour on Thursday mornings, please give it a try. Both men and women are needed. Don t let this mission project die. Harriet Binkley RELAY FOR LIFE REPORT Thank you to everyone who supported the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. Thanks to your generosity with loose change in the collection tins, checks and cash, our team, made up of three local United Methodist Churches, reached its goal of $1,500, which was second place of the 14 teams that comprised the Northwest Forsyth County Team. The weather was a bit chilly all day (and night) Sat., but the cause was heartwarming. Thank you again. Phyllis Moore MOTHER S DAY IS MAY 13. LUMC will be celebrating Mother s Day at both services on Sunday, May 13.

7 OUR CHURCH FAMILY.. SYMPATHY: We express our Christian love and sympathy to.. º Robert Barrett in the death of his mother, Ethel Peters, on April 27 in Iowa; º Barbara Moser in the death of her daughter, Mellyn Myers, on April 29 in Roanoke, VA. IN MEMORIAM Mellyn Moser Myers November 11, 1963 April 29, 2012 Thank you to all of you in our dear church family for your kind and thoughtful expressions of condolence to both our family and my mother at the sudden death of my father in March. It has been a difficult adjustment for us, but the love expressed to us through cards, flowers, meals, and hugs has helped a great deal. God bless each of you! Denise & Ken Criss and family BLUE STAR MEMORIAL HIGHWAY DEDICATION IS MAY 5 The Lewisville Town Council has requested and received approval to have US Highway 421 through Forsyth County designated as a Blue Star Memorial Highway, which honors all past, present and future veterans from Forsyth County. This is a growing national movement now with over 70,000 miles of highway dedicated. Appropriate signs will be erected to note this designation. The Dedication Ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 5, at 11:00 a.m. at Shallowford Square, with the rain backup location at Lewisville UMC. Participants in the dedication will include the West Forsyth High School ROTC, American Legion 522, Ralph Womble (member of the NCDOT Board of Transportation), NC House Representative Julia Howard, and other local and county persons. All are welcome and encouraged to attend this special dedication service. Lewisville UMC Members, Thank you for your generous donation of glasses for my upcoming medical mission trip to Honduras. I cannot believe that I leave in 2 weeks! I know that the Lord will do many amazing things, and thanks to your donations, many citizens of Honduras will receive glasses that otherwise could not have afforded them. I hope to send pictures soon! God bless you all! Kim Mitchell I would like to thank my church family for all their care and support when my sister, Alice Smith, passed away. Your thoughtfulness is much appreciated. Emily Sturdy and family MAY METHODIST MADNESS (Christian Home Month) To start this month off on a great note, we will have a church-wide picnic at our newly remodeled picnic shelter on Sunday, May 6. 8 ORCHESTRA CONCERT TO BE HELD AT LUMC The 9th-12th grade orchestra from Forsyth Country Day School will have their spring concert on Thursday, May 3, at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary of Lewisville UMC. This is their final concert of the season and will present the music of twentieth-century British string composers. Entitled God Save the Queen, they plan to perform music by Percy Grainger, Ralph Vaughn Williams, and Gustav Holst. The FCDS Concert Band will begin our evening concert with their performance starting at 7:00 pm. The FCDS Orchestra will take the stage for their performance at 7:45 pm. ALL ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND. Orchestra Director Aaron Craven states, Developed in the spring of 2001 the FCDS orchestra department now boasts more than 170 musicians in the program. As of the spring of 2012, the award winning FCDS orchestra department has been recognized as one of the top independent school orchestra programs in the Southeastern United States. The Mission of the FCDS Orchestra is to engage, inspire, and educate through music. We strive to destroy notes, one at a time, in a way that is pleasing to the ear. SPECIAL GUESTS COMING MAY 6 Lewisville UMC is privileged to welcome the Western North Carolina Board of Laity, who will be joining us for our 11:00 worship service on Sunday, May 6. The Board of Laity rotates its meetings to different local churches to experience God s work in various places. The Board of Laity plans special events in our Annual Conference, such as a Gathering of the Laity held each year at Lake Junaluska in August. After the service they will have lunch here and their meeting. Our Worship Committee has decided to serve Holy Communion on May 6 at both services and Pastor Keith will offer A Child s View of Holy Communion. He will try to explain Holy Communion so children can better understand the Sacrament. Parents of children, be sure your children come and learn about this special meal our Lord Jesus initiated. GENERAL CONFERENCE IS IN SESSION General Conference, the United Methodist Church's top legislative body, is meeting now until May 4 in Tampa, Florida. Convened every four years, the General Conference is the only entity that speaks for the entire denomination. Delegates are revising the Book of Discipline, which regulates the manner in which local churches, annual conferences and general agencies are organized. The Discipline also sets policies regarding church membership, ordination, administration, property and judicial procedures. Pastor Keith is keeping up with the events and decisions made at General Conference. If you have any questions, just ask him. YOU are encouraged to be in prayer for General Conference. The decisions made will affect our church for the next 4 years. Pray that God would lead delegates to decisions that are in accordance to His will and direction for the United Methodist Church. To keep up with events there, you can also go to the General Conference website: PRAY, PRAY, PRAY.

9 LEWISVILLE IS A STEPHEN MINISTRY CHURCH Stephen Ministers are trained lay care-givers who provide emotional and spiritual care to persons who are experiencing difficulties in their lives hospitalization, loss of a loved one, loss of job, or any other crisis situation. This is care in addition to the care the pastor gives. If you are interested in having a Stephen Minister, fill out one of the slips in the pew rack and put it in the offering plate or hand it to the minister or one of the Stephen Leaders, Becky Bingham or Tom Lee. NEW! A Stephen Minister will be available to members of the congregation for questions or prayer each Sunday morning. After the 8:30 am worship service, go to Room 212 on the Adult Education Wing. After the 11:00 am worship service, go to the parlor. METHODIST MEN S BREAKFAST MEETING The Methodist Men will have their monthly breakfast meeting Sunday, May 13, at 7:30 am in Asbury Hall. All men are invited. MOTHER'S DAY OFFERING On Mother s Day, May 13, United Methodist Churches throughout six districts in the Western North Carolina Conference are asked to support a Mother's Day Offering which supports the Financial Assistance Ministry at Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community. The Mother's Day Offering is only used for the monthly fee of a deserving/needy resident. Last year 34 financially needy residents received assistance to cover costs, as many have just outlived their income and assets. All donations, big and small, are equally important to residents who depend on financial assistance. ARE YOU GRADUATING THIS YEAR? We want to help celebrate this huge accomplishment in your life! 10 CONFIRMATION SUNDAY Sunday, May 20, is when twenty youth, who are part of our 2012 Confirmation Class, will make their commitments to Christ and His Church. They have been studying for 5 months about their faith, the Christian Church and our Church and are now ready to make their personal commitment to Christ. Sunday School will start at 9:15 a.m. A reception for the Confirmands will be held in the West Wing Lobby following the worship service. So that all these youth can be confirmed and join Christ s church together, we will have a joint worship service at 10:30 a.m. We have a joint service usually just two Sundays a year (the other is Harvest Sunday in November). But because it s a change from the usual, some may be like those early disciples, not liking to venture out of their personal comfort zone. Yes, we enjoy the type of service that is meaningful to us and the time that best suits us, but May 20 is a time we need to think about someone else other than ourselves and our comfort zones. These young people desire our support and presence on May 20. I pray that you will allow the Holy Spirit to give you the spiritual power to break from your comfort CONGRATULATIONS to Mike Collins, Randy Melton, Brandon James, and Chris Olsen for winning the 9th annual Lewisville United Methodist Men's golf tournament. Also, congratulations to our very own David McGuire for winning the longest drive competition. I would like to thank all of the people who made the golf tournament a wonderful success by their generosity either playing in the tournament, donating door prizes, or sponsoring a hole. A very special "thank you" to Wayne Hall for his guidance and encouragement. I truly appreciate it! Also, to Mandy Jones for making all of the signs for our hole sponsors. The Methodist Men are very grateful to you for your special participation. Thanks again, Chris Sonafrank LUMC VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL Christmas in July July am 12 noon In order to have a successful VBS we need many volunteers!
