2 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL From the Pastor Again and again throughout the season of Lent, we are called to conversion of heart and repentance. Consequently the priests of Queen of All Saints Parish spend quite a bit of time hearing confessions. We ordinarily double the amount of time available for confessions, and it s gratifying to see so many people taking advantage of these opportunities. In addition, at the invitation of Pope Francis, this year we celebrated a Festival of Forgiveness along with Catholic parishes all over the world on February 28. We had six priests available for confessions for three hours on that day. This week at Queens the students in our Parish Religious Education Program will have the opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation during their class times. Last week all the children in our school were given the same opportunity. So by the time Lent comes to an end, all our children will have received God s loving sacramental forgiveness. This, of course, is good news. Our hope is that our children will have enough positive experiences of receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation by the time they leave our programs that they will be able to continue going to confession on their own without the prompting of teachers and catechists. Let me take this opportunity to invite you to receive the pardon and peace of the Lord in the Sacrament of Penance. The School Council meets this coming Tuesday night. At this time of the year the members of the School Council begin to wrestle with challenge of setting the tuition for next year. I have often said that the education a child receives in Queen of All School is the best buy in town. Every child enrolled in our school receives financial assistance of almost $800 from the School Endowment Fund. Not many parishes are able to be so generous. In light of that our tuition is among the lowest in the area. In addition we provide over $87,000 in financial assistance to families in particular need. Our school is quite healthy with over 650 students, an excellent staff, a solid curriculum and a comprehensive program of religious instruction and liturgical celebration. I m grateful to the members of the School Council for their generous dedication to the continual improvement of our school. Nominations and elections of new members of the School Council are going on right now. Please consider running for the School Council if you have the inclination. Also this week the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Because he was the legal and foster father of Jesus during his childhood and youth, Saint Joseph has been declared Patron or Protector of the Universal Church. At first glance there seems to be very little material upon which to base a reflection on Saint Joseph, for what do we know of him, apart from his name and a few events that occurred in Christ's childhood? The Gospels do not record a single word from him; his language is silence. His attention to the angelic voices which spoke in his sleep and his prompt and generous obedience to them characterize his role in the Scriptures. There, is nothing else known of him. It might be said that he lived an unknown life, the life of a simple carpenter, with no sign of personal greatness. But that humble figure who was so near to Jesus and Mary, the one who was from the House of David and therefore linked with the human genealogy of the Messiah is revealed as being full of significance if

3 we look at him more closely. If we look carefully into this life that was apparently so unremarkable, we will find a great deal. The Gospels describe Saint Joseph as a just man. No greater virtue could be applied to a man of humble social condition who was apparently far from being equipped to perform great deeds. This poor, honest, hardworking man must have possessed an unfathomable interior life which gave him clear direction and from which he drew great consolation. It gave him the strength to make momentous decisions, such as the decision to give over his personal freedom to the will of God, to accept the responsibility and the burden of a family not of his own making and, through what Pope Paul VI called an incomparable virginal love, to give up the natural conjugal love that is the foundation and the nourishment of the family. In this way he offered the whole of his existence in an act of total self-sacrifice so that the mystery of the Incarnation could unfold according to God s plan. Lastly this week I will continue to interview our candidates for Confirmation. The eighth graders in our school and religious education program have been preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation for several months. Bishop George Rassas will confirm them on April 25 th. But before that happens, on behalf of the people of the parish, I have to present them to the bishop as worthy recipients of the sacrament. My interviews with them give me an opportunity to discover their understanding of the sacrament and their commitment to the Catholic faith. Earlier in the year they each wrote me a letter explaining why they wanted to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Those letters were very revealing as well. I hope to share some of the content of those letters in a subsequent article. In the meantime, please keep our candidates for Confirmation in your prayers. God bless them. Monsignor John Pollard Request for Rosaries We are always seeking Rosaries for distribution to the sick and suffering in local hospitals. Please don t hesitate to drop off any unused sacramentals to the Rectory office. Celebrant Schedule Sunday, March 22nd 5:00pm - Fr. Brendan Horan 6:45am - Msgr. John Pollard 8:00am - Fr. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament. Fourth Sunday of Lent March 15,
