2 2 Chicago, IL From the Pastor Ready or not the days of Christmas are upon us. To begin this time of prayer and festival with a mindfulness of all the blessings we have received gives us joy and guards against some of the traps that the material world sets before us, particularly at this time of the year. A mindset of thankfulness, gratitude and appreciation is a great foundation on which to build a balanced and healthy celebration of the Christmas season. Gratitude grows when we emphasize all the good things we have rather than dwelling on those we don t have. Gratitude also deepens when we commit ourselves to a life of sharing what we do have. It is within this context that I ask each family in Queen of All Saints Parish to take some time during the busy final days of Advent to reflect on the many gifts God has given you, and to make a carefully considered decision about what, in turn, you would like to offer to Queen of All Saints Parish as your Christmas gift. I ask you be as generous as you are able to be in your offering to the Basilica this Christmas. Quite frankly, we need your generosity more than we have in the time that I have been pastor. This parish is one of the many blessings for which we all ought to be most grateful. The Basilica has stood soaring above Sauganash for many generations of faithful Catholic people. In the fifty years since our church was raised to the dignity of a Basilica they have generously responded to similar requests at this time of year from my distinguished predecessors. I want to ask a special consideration of those over the age of 70 years and six months. The tax laws allow anyone over that age to make a charitable gift to Queen of All Saints Parish or School directly from their IRA without paying any tax on that money. IRAs may be the best source for contributions for many Catholics, and it s uncertain whether Congress will renew this opportunity beyond People can give any amount up to $100,000 directly to the parish tax free. These distributions are never included in your adjusted gross income and so are not taxable to you. Even taxpayers who don t itemize their deductions enjoy a tax benefit from giving to Queens. In addition to these tax-related benefits, I think those who are over seventy years and six months of age would gain other, more profound benefits as well. If they took advantage of this opportunity and made a gift to the parish from their IRA, they would have a deep sense of satisfaction that they have touched the future. They would have contributed significantly to ensuring that this great parish with such a proud past also has a bright horizon and a secure future. They would have given to the next generations of faithful Catholic people including their own children and grandchildren what they received from their parents and grandparents. When we reach a certain age, such considerations mean more than they did when we were younger, more than it is possible to put into words. I am happy to say that several parishioners have taken advantage of this opportunity in the past. I hope those who are eligible will carefully consider making a gift to the parish from their IRAs. Even though we still face some daunting economic challenges, we have so much for which to be grateful. We have our lives, our families, our faith and our parish. We have so many reasons to Rejoice. 3 Advent Prayer Monday Evening Holy Hour Each Monday during Advent, the weekly Novena and Rosary to the Blessed Mother will be followed by a Holy Hour with Exposition of The Blessed Sacrament and Benediction. Prepare your heart for Christ with an hour of prayer each week before the Body of Christ. Priests will be in the confessionals during the Holy Hour each week for the Sacrament of Reconciliation,. Mondays 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Advent Schedule Spiritual Preparation The Roman Missal, Third Edition The new translation of the Roman Missal will bring a change in the texts and prayers that we use at Mass. The heightened poetry and greater connection to Scripture of the translation offer an opportunity for us all to rediscover the meaning of the Mass. Fourth Week of Advent December 18, Sunday Second collection to support our monthly sharing with the needy December 18, Sunday Religious Education Students Christmas Program Eucharistic Adoration for Advent Monday, December 19th at 6:45pm During this final week of the Advent season, we invite you to take a brief time away from the busyness of Christmas preparations and spend time preparing your hearts to welcome Jesus by spending time in Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. The Monday Night Perpetual Novena will pray the Rosary at 6:45pm, followed by Benediction and confessions. We encourage you to bring your family for this special time of prayer. All are welcome! 4 Children s Christmas Choir Ken and Paul invite all parishioners in grades 3rd through 8th to sing in the Queen of All Saints Children s Christmas Choir. On Christmas Eve, Saturday December 24th, the Christmas Choir will sing a prelude service of Lessons and Carols beginning at 3:30pm and then provide service music at the 4:00pm Christmas Family Liturgy. Rehearsals Wednesday, December 21st at 3:15-4:45pm Thursday, December 22nd at 3:15-4:45pm Service Christmas Eve, Saturday, December 24th (Call time of 3:00pm) Service of Lessons and Carols at 3:30pm Mass at 4:00pm The UPP will be selling the Queen of All Saints ornaments in the vestibule of the Basilica after all this weekend s Masses. $20 per ornament. All packages are pre pre--wrapped. Ornaments will continue be sold in the Rectory throughout the week. This years UPP will be held on Friday, May 18th - mark your calendars. 4 Chicago, IL

6 QAS School Showcase The QAS students treated the community to a lovely evening of Christmas music during the recent Candles & Carols concert. Students in grades 1-3 along with members of the QAS Chamber Singers, Handbell Choir, Concert Band, Schola Singers and Broadway Kids after-school club entertained the packed house with a variety of traditional holiday songs. Music enrichment is part of the regular core curriculum for all QAS students. In addition to weekly music classes, students have the opportunity to participate in one of the many grade-level and specialized choirs. In addition, band and guitar lessons are offered. Throughout the year, the QAS choirs perform at area nursing homes, Misericordia, the Felician Sisters Motherhouse as well as choral festivals at Loyola Academy and VanderCook College of Music. 7 IRA Charitable Gifts are STILL AN OPTION (But only until December 31, 2011) Last year, Congress re-authorized legislation that allows you to make charitable gifts from your IRA accounts during 2011 without incurring income tax on the withdrawal. That provision is set to expire on December 31, 2011 and it might now be renewed. The IRA Charitable Rollover provides you with an excellent opportunity to make a gift during your lifetime from an asset that would be subject to multiple levels of taxation if it remained in your taxable estate. Here are some important rules to keep in mind if you are considering a 2011 IRA gift to Queen of All Saints: You must be age 70 1/2 or older at the time of gift. Transfers must be made directly from a traditional IRA account by your plan provider to the parish. Funds that are withdrawn by you and then contributed do NOT qualify. Gifts from 401k, 403b, SEP and other plans do not qualify. Your plan administrator may make the check out to the parish and mail the check to you. But you must postmark the check to us by December 31, Gifts must be outright, Distributions to donor-advised funds, certain supporting organizations, or life-income arrangements such as a charitable remained trusts and charitable gift annuities are not allowed. Benefits - qualified charitable distributions: Can total up to $100,000 Are not included in your gross income for federal income tax purposes on your IRS Form 1040 (no charitable deduction is available, however) Example: Suppose John has $5000,000 in an IRA and he also wants to contribute $25,000 to his parish. He can authorize the administrator of his IRA to transfer $25,000 to the parish. The $25,000 distribution to his parish will not be subject to tax and will be counted towards his annual minimum required distribution. 9 The Word Feeding Justice Reflections on the Sunday Lectionary December 18th, 2011: 4 th Sunday of Advent Catholic Social Teaching: Option for the Poor and Vulnerable First Reading: 2nd Samuel 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a-16 Psalm: 89 Second Reading: Romans 16:25-27 Gospel: Luke 1:26-38 Will we let the Lord take us from settled pastures of complacency and not be afraid to venture into the realm of God s desires? Can we see the newness of the impossible replacing repetitiveness of familiarity? Have we as parish done the same annual holiday shopping without questioning the potential wickedness in buying socially irresponsible merchandise? Clothing items possibly crafted in sweatshops, chocolate that might use slave or child labor in harvesting ingredients, wreathes from forests forgoing sustainable practices or holiday ornaments manufactured by artisans not paid a living wage. To pursue gift giving according to God s words, go and tell your friends and fellow parishioners, to raise awareness of socially responsible options to show we stand firm in our covenant with God in all our actions. Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church 172. The universal right to use the goods of the earth is based on the principle of the universal destination of goods. Each person must have access to the level of well-being necessary for his full development. The right to the common use of goods is the first principle of the whole ethical and social order and the characteristic principle of Christian social doctrine. For this reason the Church feels bound in duty to specify the nature and characteristics of this principle. It is first of all a natural right, inscribed in human nature and not merely a positive right connected with changing historical circumstances; moreover it is an inherent right. It is innate in individual persons, in every person, and has priority with regard to any human intervention concerning goods, to any legal system concerning the same, to any economic or social system or method: All other rights, whatever they are, including property rights and the right of free trade must be subordinated to this norm [the universal destination of goods]; they must not hinder it, but must rather expedite its application. It must be considered a serious and urgent social obligation to refer these rights to their original purpose. The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace issued the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church.
