1 November 27th, 2011 First Sunday of Advent In this season of rebirth and renewal, rediscover the meaning of the Mass and its importance in our lives. The entire Church in the United States has been blessed with this opportunity to Deepen its understanding of the Sacred Liturgy. ~United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

2 The Roman Missal, Third Edition New Words: A Deeper Meaning, but the same Mass My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This Advent the English-speaking parts of the Church will begin to use the new translation of the Roman Missal in our celebration of the Eucharist. The Roman Missal is the large red book in which all the prayers of the Mass are located. It is a sacramental and as such is always treated with the respect and reverence it is due. While the specific changes in the words of the Mass are minimal, the use of the new language of the Missal gives us an opportunity to review the meaning of the Mass and reflect on the quality of our prayer as a community of faith. Advent is a period of hopeful, vigilant waiting for the coming of Christ at Christmas. But on a deeper level, Advent characterizes the stance of the Christian throughout his or her life. For as long as we live on this earth, we are watching and waiting for the return of the Lord at the end of time. The season of Advent reminds us to raise our eyes from the daily distractions of everyday life to gaze toward the horizon of our hope, our inclusion in the kingdom of God. Advent focuses our attention not only on the end of the calendar year and the Solemnity of the Nativity of Christ, but also on the end of time itself when Christ will return for the second time in human history and present all of creation to his heavenly Father. The one who holds out until the end will see salvation. The believer who is able to watch carefully and wait patiently for the return of Christ will be saved. It is a message of encouragement and hope for each one of us on our journey to meet God and remain in eternal communion with him. Those who persevere to the end will discover that the object of their longing, God himself, was there all along drawing them to himself. I encourage you to maintain a spirit of prayer during the days of Advent. There will be much to distract you from the authentic spirit of this joyful season of anticipation for the coming of Christ at Christmas. Amidst the many responsibilities, anxieties and concerns which you face each day, turn to the Lord in prayer and ask Him to fill you with His strength and peace. I assure all of you, dear friends, of my own prayerful support in Christ Jesus. Let us use this season of Advent to welcome the new translation of the Roman Missal and renew our understanding of the Mass. May God bless you throughout this joyful season. 2 Chicago, IL Reverend Monsignor John Pollard Pastor

3 Advent Prayer Monday Evening Holy Hour Each Monday during Advent, the weekly Novena and rosary to the Blessed Mother will be followed by a Holy Hour with Exposition of The Blessed Sacrament and Benediction. Prepare your heart for Christ with an hour of prayer each week before the Body of Christ. Priests will be in the confessionals during the Holy Hour each week for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Mondays 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Spiritual Preparation The Roman Missal, Third Edition The new translation of the Roman Missal, set to begin the First Sunday of Advent, will bring a change in the texts and prayers that we use at Mass. The heightened poetry and greater connection to Scripture of the translation offer an opportunity for us all to rediscover the meaning of the Mass. 6 Thanksgiving at the Food Pantry As you can imagine, our parish-run food pantry at Albany Park Community Center Food Pantry has seen first hand how difficult life in this economy is for a large number of people. In the fifteen years of our existence, we have seen our numbers steadily increase. Our first month, we served about 100 families. We are now serving over 600 families that include 2,200 people each month. We have determined that we have now served over 280,000 people and distributed over 2.5 MILLION pounds of food since we opened!!! Fortunately, we are blessed with a most amazing group of volunteers from our parish. I wish to say thank you to all of you who have volunteered at or for the pantry in the past. I cannot say enough about your dedication, professionalism and hard work. It is a gift to work with each and every one of you. Thank you also to our parish that has supported this endeavor from the start. We are grateful to have this opportunity to serve the poor and hungry in such a direct manner. It is inspiring to see our faith in action. We also are grateful to other groups who have been helping us. A group of men from Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Glenview pick up bread from local stores and restaurants and deliver a large load of bakery goods each Friday. This is in addition to our faithful drivers who pick up at Whole Foods, Deerfield s, Dominick s and Schlegl s. All of this bread would have been wasted but instead it goes to hungry families. A group of neighbors in the Ravenswood Manor area heard about us and now hold a neighborhood food drive once a month. Many parishioners have been so generous in supporting us through donations of diapers, formula, toys and books for the little children who come with their parents to the pantry or monetarily through individual donations. Thanks to all who walked the Hunger Walk with us in June. We raised enough money to buy food for about 2 months. Different groups have helped us this last year. QAS School holds a food drive every year during Catholic Schools Week and delivers a great amount of food to us. Thanks to the Family Ministry and Men s Club who shared some of the proceeds of their recent food drive. We also enjoy having teens and children who come with their parents to do service hours for Confirmation and school requirements. Another parishioner helps with correspondence. Thanks also to Infant, Inc., which supplies us with formula for our babies. We welcome any donation of food, diapers, formula and gently used small toys and books. We also thank those we serve for allowing us to serve them, not just by receiving our food but allowing us to see a little closer into their world. In many ways, we receive as much as our clients. New volunteers are always welcome. We have many, many different jobs from unloading our delivery truck on the 2 nd and 4 th Thursday mornings to bagging on all the other Thursdays in the evening at 5pm to picking up bakery goods from Deerfield s, Schlegl s, or Whole Foods to all the different jobs during our Friday morning distribution time. Call Peggy Molina at 847/ for information. Again, thank you. Peggy 6 Chicago, IL

7 St. Vincent de Paul Society The St. Vincent de Paul Society of Queen of All Saints is sponsoring its annual Share Christmas with the poor this weekend of. We ask that each family wishing to participate take only one name from the tree. If a family wishes to do more or if someone wishing to participate does not get one of the names from the tree, they may bring in an unwrapped toy, items of clothing such as warm hats, gloves, scarves, socks, or a gift card to our collection the weekend December 10th and 11th. The instructions for wrapping the tree gift items will be on the cards. Please attach the name cards securely to the front of the wrapped item. This is the only way we will know where and to whom the gift goes. Remember also to leave your name and telephone number on the card attached to the back of the name card. The St. Vincent de Paul Society thanks our parishioners for their past generosity and for all your support in our efforts to help those in need.
