2 From the Pastor November is the month of the Holy Souls and so thoughts about the faithful departed are a natural part of our prayerful remembrances this month. Also, recently the Vatican s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith issued an instruction, To Rise with Christ, on the burial rites involving ashes/cremated remains of the deceased. In issuing this Instruction, the Congregation noted that "the practice of cremation has notably increased in many countries, but simultaneously new ideas contrary to the Church's faith have also become widespread." Because of this, the Instruction is intended to emphasize the "pastoral reasons for the preference of the burial of the remains of the faithful and to set out norms pertaining to the conservation of ashes in the case of cremation." In light of this Instruction, some questions might raise in the minds of Catholic people. 1. Why are they changing the Rules on Cremation? The rules that govern cremation after death for the Catholic Church are actually not changing! Since 1963 the Church has allowed cremation and since the early 1997 it has allowed a funeral liturgy in the presence of cremated remains. Even with these concessions, the Church has always stressed the importance of burying the remains of the faithful, either the body or the cremated remains. In recent times, the practice of cremation has notably increased in many countries. Simultaneously, new and sometimes puzzling ideas contrary to the Church's vision of Christian burial have redirected the focus of Christian death (for example, cremated remains being used to make jewelry or other mementos). Thus, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has deemed opportune the publication of a new Instruction, with the intention of underlining, or re-emphasizing the doctrinal and pastoral reasons for the preference of the burial of the remains of the faithful and to set out norms for the conservation of cremated remains. 2. Is the prohibition of scattering ashes or keeping them in the home new? No. These are not new prohibitions. What the Instruction is emphasizing is the Church's ancient tradition of preferring that the bodies of the deceased be buried. Noting that there are reasons one might choose to be cremated, the Church holds to that tradition of burying remains, because of what we believe about the Resurrection - that one day, Christ will return in glory and our bodies and souls will be reunited but will be remade on that last day, sharing the Glory of the Risen Christ. Because of this, it is inconsistent with this belief to scatter the cremated remains of our deceased (into the air, on the ground, or in bodies of water) or to divide them, or to keep them in homes. 3. Then what are to be done with the cremated remains of a deceased loved one? The Instruction notes that "when, for legitimate motives, cremation of the body has been chosen, the ashes of the faithful must be laid to rest in a sacred place, that is, in a cemetery or, in certain cases, in a church or an area, which has been set aside for this purpose... From the earliest times, Christians have desired that the faithful departed become the objects of the Christian community's prayers and remembrance. Their tombs have become places of prayer, remembrance and reflection. The faithful departed remain part of the Church who believes 'in the communion of all the faithful of Christ, those who are pilgrims on earth, the dead who are being purified, and the blessed in heaven, all together forming one Church'." The Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Chicago are always ready to assist families who are dealing with the death of a loved one, and if cremation has been chosen, the Cemeteries are able to provide options for burial or internment of the cremated remains. Please remember to keep the holy souls in your prayers throughout the month of November. God bless you. Monsignor John Pollard 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL

5 Parish News The Albany Park Community Center Food Pantry Is Closing We are very sad to announce that the APCC Food Pantry is closing November 18, The Community Center must use our space to accommodate more children at the Kimball site. Due to security concerns with the children we will not be able to operate our food pantry. The APCC Food Pantry was started as a cooperative effort of Queen of All Saints Parish and the Community Center on November 15, The Community Center provided our space free of charge and volunteers from Queens operated the food pantry providing the food and working many, many hours to serve our many clients from the surrounding neighborhoods that needed help stretching their food budgets. We have enjoyed serving the poor and hungry for 20 years. Many of us have said that it is true that we receive more than we give in our ministry to the poor. We are providing our clients with the names of other pantries where they can go to for food. We will be providing a full and final report next month. Thank you to the many parishioners and friends who have donated their time, talents and treasure over these last 20 years. ~Peggy Molina Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 13,

14 WHY GO TO MASS EVERY SUNDAY? REASON #51 At times it seems we are living in a hard and unforgiving world. We set very high expectations for others, especially leaders and other public figures, and when they don t fulfill those expectations; we tend to judge them rather harshly. Once someone has made a mistake or lost our confidence, it s very difficult for that person to get back into our good graces. This happens within families as well as neighborhoods and communities. In contemporary society, trust is hard to win back once it has been lost. Over and against this hard and unforgiving perspective is one that is more merciful, more forgiving. That perspective is woven throughout our celebration of the Eucharist on Sunday. We ask God s forgiveness for our sins in the Penitential Rite; we publicly ask one another for forgiveness in the Confiteor, we extend and receive the sign of peace just before we receive Holy Communion and the celebrant encourages us to Go in peace just before we leave. In the world of the Sunday Eucharist, compassion, tolerance, understanding and mercy replace coldness and hardness of heart. Queen of All Saints Basilica, Rev. Msgr. 15 f tewardship Queen of All Saints Basilica Committed to Christ, sharing God's gifts, building the Church together Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time - November 13, 2016 Stewardship in Times of Sadness and Deprivation We thank God for the embarrassing moments of our lives, for the disappointments, the sorrows, even the mistakes, because we know that God was present in each of those moments, ready to teach us and to guide us. The Christian steward can go deep in prayer and thank God for lessons learned in times of trouble as well as times of bounty. Gratitude, for the Christian steward, is not just rendered in times of plenty, but in times of sadness and deprivation. The God of all is present in all situations. Please consider what we can give back to our parish, in our time, talent and treasure, in response to the great gifts God has given us. Rather, we wanted to present ourselves as a model for you, so that you might imitate us. - 2 THESSALONIANS 3:9 Most people who live a grateful and generous lifestyle don t go around bragging about it. But through their actions and words, others do take notice. They notice because of the joy and peace that results and other people desire this in their own life. Know that the way you live your life may be the only interaction others have with the Catholic faith. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament. Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 13,
