3 Infant Baptism: Welcoming Babies to the Catholic Faith Having a baby is an exciting and joyful time albeit at times an exhausting one too! Your faith community at Queen of All Saints is anxious to share your joy and welcome your baby through Baptism. We are beginning a new preparation process for parents seeking Baptism for their babies. Understanding your baby s Baptism and its effects and your role as parents in your baby s faith is just as critical as finding the right pediatrician or nourishing the baby properly. Starting in August, the preparation sessions will be led by some of our new baptismal prep team members: Carol and Pete Tomaselli, Lauren Gaffey, Mike and Manette Lill, John and Kathleen Linn, Ken and Julie Sotak. The preparation consists of one session conducted at the parish from 7:30-9 on scheduled evenings. Parents are invited to come at 7:15 for social time and refreshments. The session is required for each Baptism whether it is the first child in the family or later children. After all, each child is special, and so is the Baptism of each child. Parents who attended a session for previous children will be asked to share their experience during the preparation session and assist new parents with ways to help their child grow in faith. Preparation sessions will take place in the Holy Name Room. The coming months are scheduled for: August 25, Sept. 27, and Oct. 27. To schedule a Baptism and register for the preparation session, please come to the rectory. You are welcome to attend the preparation before the baby s birth if you desire. School Supplies Needed During the month of August we will be collecting school supplies for the children at the food pantry. The stores are starting their sales now. If you can help us get paper, pencils, pens, book bags, notebooks, folders, crayons, markers, etc - please put them in the bins in the back of church. If you need us to pick up your donations, call Pat Steiner at You will be helping the children get off to a good start in school. Thank you so much from the Albany Park Food Pantry Volunteers! The St. Vincent DePaul Gift-Card Collection Weekend of Sunday, August 14th We will be collecting gift cards during all the Masses in two weeks. Even a small donation of $10 or $15 is of help to those in the area. Recommended places are: Jewel, Target, Aldi, Walmart, CVS Walgreens, Shell BP, Subway, McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell or Panera Bread. Due to the inclimate weather last weekend, we have rescheduled Ravinia Night for Sunday, August 27th at 7:00pm Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 31,

6 As for me and my house - we shall serve the Lord. Hear the call to Liturgical Ministry The Liturgy is the source and summit of all we do as Baptized Catholics. To serve your fellow parishioners through Liturgical ministry is a special gift indeed. We are currently in need of new Eucharistic ministers. This ministry is open to all parishioners, high school age or older. According to Liturgical guidelines, those who would consider this ministry should be a baptized Catholic in good standing with the Church, who attends Sunday Mass regularly. The minister will be a person of faith who believes in God, follows Christ and trusts in the Holy Spirit. Experience the joy of serving the Body and Blood of Christ to the Body of Christ Eucharistic ministers are those who share the Body and Blood with the assembly at Mass. It is a wonderful calling to participate in the sacred nourishment of your fellow parishioners. The ministry of Extraordinary Minister of Communion is open to any parishioner, high school age or older. Because of the flexibility in serving with no specific schedule, high school students are especially encouraged to consider this ministry. Ministers simply sign up in the Sacristy for a station at whichever Mass they happen to attend. There are two training sessions schedules for NEW Eucharistic ministers. You only need to attend one of these: Tuesday, August 16 at 7:00pm OR Saturday, August 20 at 12:00 noon. WHY GO TO MASS EVERY SUNDAY? REASON 36 People get frustrated when their prayers aren t answered. They figure why bother praying if I don t get what I m praying for. That s an understandable way of thinking for human beings, but not for God. God is not a human being. He s not a kind of super human, all-knowing human or all-powerful human. God is not human at all. In fact he is the opposite of human; he is divine. God doesn t need our prayers. God doesn t need anything at all. Human beings need to pray because, in the act of creation, God calls every person from nothingness into existence. Our response to being created is to be in search of the Creator for the length of our lives. We raise our hearts and minds to God in that search, and that raising of our hearts and minds to God is called prayer. So we need to pray in order to be authentic human beings in right relationship with our Creator. The Sunday Eucharist recognizes and celebrates that right relationship in the highest form of Christian prayer, the Mass. Queen of All Saints Basilica, Rev. Msgr. John Pollard 6 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL
7 f tewardship Queen of All Saints Basilica Committed to Christ, sharing God's gifts, building the Church together Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - July 31, 2016 Think Back to Our Weather Last Weekend Despite high heat and humidity, the Basilica remained comfortable for all our worshippers regardless of age or physical condition. We are truly fortunate that those who came before us designed and built a church with a classic look and with modern air conditioning. However, our electric bills are a matter for today. Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one s life does not consist of possessions. - Luke 12:15 The Gospel message today is so contrary to our modern culture where advertising continually tries to convince us that our value lies in the things we possess. Jesus showed us that our true value lies in the way we live our lives. He challenges us to not store up or hoard material possessions, but rather to live a grateful and generous lifestyle. Please remember that your comfort and the comfort of others are part of what is paid for with your financial support. Please consider what we can give back to our parish, in our time, talent and treasure, in response to the great gifts God has given us. July 11 to July 17, 2016 Sunday Stewardship Donation Type Amount Users Envelopes $13, Loose Cash $5, n/a Elect. Giving $5, Total $24, Year-to-Date $77, Religious Education News Religious Education Registration Registration continues for the coming school year for Religious Education classes. If you have not already done so, simply download the registration forms from the parish website and bring them to the RE Office completed along with payment. The deadline for registration is August 15 th. Any registrations after that date will not have a choice of placement. Students will be placed in classes that remain open for added students, or be put on a waiting list. Help Needed There is a need for additional volunteers in our parish religious education program for the school year. We are looking for catechists on both Sundays and Tuesdays, crossing guards, attendance clerks, and general assistance. If you are interested and would like more information, please call Aline Reynolds at the RE Office (773) Your reward will be heavenly. Wedding Banns Timothy P. Kosiba & Cari L. If you are a registered parishioner, please come into the rectory during business hours to schedule your child's baptism. If it is not possible for you to come into the rectory, please call the rectory to make arrangements. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated two or three Sundays of the month, depending on the time of year, at 1:30 PM - call the rectory for the exact schedule. A Baptismal Preparation class for the parents is required. They are held once a month and must also be scheduled in advance. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests. The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament. Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 31,
