2 My Friends, As I am finishing up my assignment at Queen of All Saints, I would like to tell you that it has been five wonderful years of immense blessings, growth, challenges, and yet, surprises. I will be leaving you with no small degree of sadness. There is sadness because I will be leaving so many wonderful people. I ve been honored to get to know many of you. I had the opportunity to watch your children grow and reach adulthood. I have been privileged to serve you at various periods of time, time of great joy and time of deep sadness. As I look back over the five years of my ministry in this awesome parish, my heart is filled with joy, gratitude, and admiration. As I think of my time as a transitional deacon and then a priest of the Catholic Church, here at Queens, I thank God for all of you. I thank you for your great kindness, trust, and all of your expressions of support over the years. Some of you accompanied me from the very first day, when His Eminence Cardinal Francis George ordained me a priest. I thank you for that. I am grateful for the many parishioners and friends that have helped guide me on my pilgrim way. I will remember the ways this community gathers to celebrate the Holy Eucharist and to celebrate life. I will remember how you support one another in death and how you reach out to people in need. I thank all the talented priests and deacons that I had the privilege of working with over the years. Our parish has many hard working staff. From the very first day, they welcomed me into their family. I appreciate and thank their great work for the betterment of this community. I pray and remember those who are no longer with us. I couldn't ask God for anything more. Priests will come and go, but Queen of All Saints will always remain as you all work selflessly for and in this community of faith that constantly grows, that courageously reaches out to others, and becomes a vital sign of God s loving Kingdom in Sauganash. This is a special place. This is your treasure and you know it. Continue the light of Queen of All Saints to shine even stronger as years go by. I thank all who helped with my Farewell Mass. Special thank you to our choir and all musicians, under the direction of Ken Sotak, and to our cantor Paul Scavone, who also helped to plan the liturgy. Your talent and voices, blessed our celebration with a reminder how heaven s music must sound! Many of you offered me best wishes, generous gifts, notes, and cards. I am deeply touched by your kind words and your support over the last five years. I thank all who helped with the Appreciation Barbeque, especially The Men s Club, QASPA, Women s Auxiliary, and Parish Staff. Effective July 1, 2011, I will move on and welcome new challenges of my new assignment at Incarnation Parish in Palos Heights. I will do that with the words Jesus, I trust in you! on my lips and in my heart. I will have a new address and contact information: Rev. Arek Falana Incarnation Catholic Parish 5757 West 127 th Street Palos Heights, IL fatherarek@gmail.com Thank You! Dziękuję! Fr. Arek Falana June 26,

3 FAREWELL FATHER AREK I know I write on behalf of the pastoral staff and people of Queen of All Saints Basilica when I extend our deepest gratitude and fondest best wishes to Father Arek Falana. During his five years among us, Father Arek has distinguished himself as a dedicated and generous parish priest. He has especially excelled in his celebration of the sacraments and his devotion to ensuring that the Church s liturgies are fitting offerings of praise and thanks to God. Whether he was the celebrant at a Sunday Mass, hearing confessions, witnessing marriages, visiting and anointing the sick or pouring the waters of baptism; Father Arek conducted himself as a faithful minister of the graces of each of these sacraments. His careful attention to the details of each liturgical celebration revealed a remarkable appreciation for the Church s history and tradition. In his celebration of the sacraments, Father Arek always strove to be an effective bridge between the human and the divine, between God and the people. That s precisely what a parish priest is supposed to be. And so it is with a mixture of sadness and hope that we bid farewell to Father Arek. We are sad to see him move on to become associate pastor of Incarnation Parish and hopeful that he will be able to continue his loving ministry among the people of that parish. They are very blessed indeed to have Father Arek. We know that while he was among us he showed the kindness and gentleness of the Good Shepherd, and for that the pastoral staff and people of this great parish are profoundly grateful. Farewell, Father Arek, may God go with you to your new parish, may he bless your priestly hands with happiness and holiness and may he hold you in the palms of his own divine hands all the days of your life. Monsignor John Pollard GLOSSARY TERMS Eucharistic Prayer: This prayer is the summit of the celebration of the Mass. It is a prayer of thanksgiving and sanctification. The word Eucharist comes from the Greek and is literally translated as thanksgiving. The entire congregation of the faithful joins itself to Christ in offering sacrifice to God, and in turn Christ is offered to the Church in his Body and Blood. June 26,

10 The Word Feeding Justice June 26, 2011: The Body and Blood of Christ Sunday Catholic Social Teaching: Solidarity First Reading: Deuteronomy 8:2-3, 14b-16a Psalm: 147 Second Reading: 1 st Corinthians 10:16-17 Gospel: John 6:51-58 We acknowledge Jesus presence before sitting in the pew, with a sign of reverence toward the tabernacle. His presence in the Word helps us see God brought us through all our journeys in the deserts of self-indulgence, doubt and slavery in idolatry to things of the world. Tested in struggles, we hungered with parched souls to be fed unknown bread. God s patience viewed our free wills struggle with sincerity to follow His commandments. In rising from the pew, to proceed to the Eucharistic table, we make a statement of hungering and thirsting no more. The real presence of Jesus, we receive in our hands and drink from the cup grants life giving peace in the endless boarders of our souls. A gift not received as individuals, but in unity we are many, partaking of one loaf, as one body of Christ. Rising from the pew, the profound embrace has satisfied our yearning knowing the kingdom of the Messiah is precisely the kingdom of peace. The promise of peace that runs through the entire Old Testament finds its fulfillment in the very person of Jesus. Peace, in fact, is the messianic attribute par excellence, in which all other beneficial effects of salvation are included. The Hebrew word shalom expresses this fullness of meaning in its etymological sense of completeness. The kingdom of the messiah is precisely the kingdom of peace. Jesus is our peace (Eph 2:14). He has broken down the dividing wall of hostility among people, reconciling them with God (cf. Eph 2:14-16). This is the very effective simplicity with which Saint Paul indicates the radical motivation spurring Christians to undertake a life and mission of peace. On the eve of his death, Jesus speaks of his loving relation with the Father and the unifying power that this love bestows upon his disciples. It is a farewell discourse which reveals the profound meaning of his life and can be considered a summary of all this teaching. The gift of peace is the seal of his spiritual testament: Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you (John 14:27). The words of the Risen Lord will not be any different; every time that he meets his disciples they receive from him the greeting and gift of peace: Peace be with you (Luke 24:36; John 20:19, 21, 26). (Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, paragraph 491) How will you live that mission of peace when you rise from the pew this week? Individual Reflection: 1 st Corinthians 10:16-17 Visit the website of NETWORK, a Catholic Social Justice Lobby, to learn more about their Mind The Gap campaign. How do you see issues they discuss present in your neighborhood and what can you do to address those concerns? Family Reflection: John 6:51-58 Talk about how the gifts of bread and wine in the Eucharist take many people to grow, process and produce. Discuss how this is a symbol of unity. June 26,

11 I would like to formally invite all of you to a Ravinia style event on our front lawn. Here are the details: What: Morgan Fingleton will be playing various adult contemporary music for your listening pleasure. Morgan is an Irish lad with a nice brogue and an even better voice. He plays many hot spots in the Lincoln Park area and I believe he has the scope of music that will entertain all of us. When: June 26, 2011 from 7pm to 10pm...feel free to arrive a bit earlier if you would like to save your spot. If there is any hint of bad weather, the event will be canceled. (Note: Mr. Skilling says it is going to be perfect that day, so keep your fingers crossed) Where: On the lawn in front of the Basilica How: There is no need for volunteers, sign up sheets or anything else. The only thing you need to do is bring yourselves and families and join fellow parishioners for a night of music and fun. Per the Ravinia style, feel free to bring your own refreshments and food. The only restrictions are no grills or anything with open flames. Also, bring comfortable chairs and/or blankets to relax. We will not provide any tables or chairs for seating. Monsignor Pollard will make sure the Queen of All Saints Basilica lawn is at a perfect height for the event. We will have full access to the bathrooms inside the front entrance of the Basilica. PLEASE make sure to pick up your areas. We will have plenty of trash containers for garbage on the lawn and the maintenance crew will be emptying them throughout the night as needed. Our goal is to leave the lawn in exactly the same condition as when we arrive. We would ask that everyone be mindful and not go into the sanctuary itself and I will have someone standing security to make sure no shenanigans go on inside. Finally, being mindful of the neighbors we will end promptly at 10pm and I would ask that you do not bring anything else that would play loud music after. If you have any questions, please let me know and I hope to see everyone there.
