2 A Special Word from the Pastor 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL In just two weeks the expansive green that stretches before the Basilica will be the site of our annual gala. This year the United Parish Program presents Gala on the Green. To mark that occasion a majestic white tent will rise over the scene welcoming all the revelers to come together for an evening of celebration, thanksgiving and let s be honest fund raising. We will be celebrating the community spirit that binds the people of Queen of All Saints Parish together, just as it has for many previous generations. We will be giving thanks, first of all, to God for having brought us together in this marvelous place and, secondly, to all those generous benefactors who have sustained this great parish in the past and who continue to support it in the present. We will be pooling a portion of our resources, both personal and financial, to ensure that Queen of All Saints continues to be the luminous star that lights the way for Catholic families for generations to come. First of all, the event is commonly referred to as the UPP, the United Parish Program. This characterization speaks volumes in just those three words. All the many and varied organizations active in the parish come together to work for a common goal. Simply to express our unity in this singular event enhances that unity and, like sacramental experiences, actually significantly contributes to the achievement of that unity. In addition, the vast majority of our parishioners who aren t particularly active in one or other of our parish organizations are nevertheless vital components in the community of faith that is Queen of All Saints Parish. Secondly, the UPP benefits both parishioners in general as well as our many ministries, groups, clubs, organizations and programs. Just as all share in the success of Gala on the Green, all are expected to contribute what they are able to ensuring that success. That brings me to my pitch. I am not at all shy or ashamed to invite all the parishioners of Queen of All Saints to participate in some way in Gala on the Green. Every family in the parish and we have 3,000 families should be represented. There are many ways to participate other than simply buying a ticket and attending. You could be a sponsor, take out an advertisement in the event booklet, offer an item for auction, buy some raffle tickets or work on one of the many committees preparing for the event. This is the one major fund raiser of the year for this parish. Most parishes have several throughout the year which can be annoying but it has been part of the distinguished recent history of this parish to have only one. As a result, the success of our annual fund raiser is essential to the smooth operation of the parish. We have to raise $275,000 in order to achieve our goal. That s a lot of money, but we need it in order to fund the many ministries of the parish. Without a financially successful event we would have to consider eliminating one or more of them. So I am calling on all the people of Queen of All Saints Parish to share the responsibility of raising the funds we need to keep our budget balanced and to continue our wonderful works of charity and social justice. I am deeply grateful to Melissa McManamy and Mira Gundlach who are coordinating Gala on the Green as well as to the many individuals who are working so hard on the various committees. But they cannot do it alone. If you are a part of this parish and want it to continue to serve the liturgical, catechetical and social needs of this community, you must contribute in some way to the success of Gala on the Green. In the following pages of this bulletin, many opportunities are presented to participate in making Gala on the Green a brilliant, shining success. 9 Parish News Religious Education News This weekend, we turn our attention to all those who are welcomed to the Lord s Table for the first time. At both the 11AM and the 2PM Mass on Saturday, there were 118 children joining their families for Communion. Please continue to pray and support these families as they grow in faith. On Tuesday, May 6 th we will have the last session of RE classes for the year. Beginning at the usual time with class, dismissal will be from the Basilica. Parents may join us at 5:30 for the closing prayer service. We look forward to seeing you in September. RE Registration for Registration for the coming school year is now underway. All forms for registration may be found on the parish website. Simply download all forms and bring them to the RE Office. Be sure to register before the June 12 to receive the Early Bird discount. Families are asked to pay a minimum of $75 at the time of registration. Since this is the Year of Strong Catholic Families, we are hoping that many of you would consider volunteering in the program. I promise you that your rewards will be great. Treasure Island Vacation Bible School We will be beginning registration for Vacation Bible School this week. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated on the 2nd, 3rd & 4th Sunday of each month at 1:30 PM. Please come into the rectory to schedule the baptism for your child. Prior to the baptism, the parents are invited to attend a baptismal preparation session. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests. The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica.
