4 Jesus names Mary mother in his family BY CLIFFORD M. YEARY Associate Director of Little Rock Scripture Study This is the Eleventh Article in Hearing the Good News series from Little Rock Scripture Study. The Little Rock Scripture Study groups, lead by Mike Monnelly, will be studying The Book of Job in September. Registration will be held during August and the beginning of September The Gospels make it clear. There is no question that Jesus came from a fairly large family. The longest single list of his family members is found in Matthew 13: He came to his native place and taught the people in their synagogue. They were astonished and said, Where did this man get such wisdom and mighty deeds? Is he not the carpenter s son? Is not his mother named Mary and his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas? Are not his sisters all with us? Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Christians have always believed that Mary, the mother of Jesus, remained a virgin throughout her life, and so discovering that all the Gospels mention Jesus having brothers can be a source of puzzlement (Luke and John never refer to any sisters of Jesus). It is significant that the tradition of Mary s perpetual virginity was never seen as conflicting with Scripture in the early Church, though there were two different traditions used to explain the nature of Jesus and Mary s kinship to those identified as his brothers and sisters. In the Greek-speaking church (the Eastern Orthodox) it was most often claimed that Joseph was a widower when he was betrothed to Mary and that he had children from his previous wife. In a legal sense, this would make these children Jesus half brothers or sisters. In the Latin-speaking church, the so-called brothers and sisters of Jesus were understood as actually being his cousins. It is said to have been common in the Jewish culture of the time and place to refer to a cousin as a brother or sister. It is not unheard of today in cultures with a strong clan or patriarchal structure. While the matter of Jesus siblings is often the first concern of Catholics just discovering the references to them in the Bible, the most valuable message we can take from the passages referring to Mary s and Jesus immediate family is one concerning our own call to discipleship. When any of our Gospels characterize Jesus relationship to his family, they convey a common message concerning the primary importance of discipleship. Matthew and Mark are the most closely aligned in their treatment of Jesus and his family. Both Matthew (12:46-50) and Mark (3:31-35) record an incident where Jesus is speaking indoors to a crowd when his family comes to get him, but can t make their way inside to Jesus because of the crowd. When Jesus is told that his mother and his family are calling for him, he seemingly disavows his relationship to them. As recorded in Mark, Jesus says, Who are my mother and (my) brothers? And looking around at those seated in the circle he said, Here are my mother and my brothers. (For) whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother. The message, however, is not that Jesus has rejected his family; it is that the kinship most important to him is the one of spiritual affinity. Those who are obedient to God are Jesus brothers and sisters. Luke also records this incident (8:19-21), but Luke, in his infancy narrative (1:26 2:52), has previously devoted a very significant amount of his Gospel to Mary and her obedient response to all that God asks of her. Mary s response to the angel Gabriel s announcement that she is to bear a child who is to be called the Son of God is one of humble acceptance. Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word. (Luke 1:38) Mary may well not understand Jesus behavior later in life. When Joseph and Mary return to the temple after discovering the adolescent Jesus missing from among their fellow pilgrims returning to Nazareth, it is clear that Mary does not understand why Jesus acts as he does. But her response is a disciple s response. Mary, Luke tells us, kept all these things in her heart. (Luke 2:51) In John s Gospel Mary appears in two key episodes. She is with Jesus at the beginning of his ministry, at the wedding at Cana (2:1-12), and at the cross when he dies (19:25-27). It is at the cross, immediately preceding his death, that Jesus gives his mother to his most faithful disciple for them to share a new mother/child relationship. Again, the message seems clear. Jesus family is composed of those who are truly his disciples. But not by coincidence, Jesus mother is our mother in this new family. This article was originally published in Arkansas Catholic. 5 SCHOOL REGISTRATION Registration applications can be requested in the Main School Office ( ). Summer hours: Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. until Noon. For registration: Please present a Birth Certificate (not the hospital certificate) for all new students. Please present a Baptismal Certificate for all new students. Junior Kindergarten through Grade 8 children transferring from other schools public, private or parochial, will be accepted on an individual basis. At the time of registration, copies of the most current progress report, report card and standardized testing are to be submitted with all registration forms. There is a $50.00 non-refundable registration fee per child for Preschool and Jr. Kindergarten and a $ non-refundable registration fee per family for Kindergarten through Grade 8, which will be applied toward tuition. 6 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Registration for Registration for the coming school year is now underway. All forms for registration may be found on the parish website, qasparish.org. Simply download all forms and bring them to the RE Office. Families are asked to pay a minimum of $75 at the time of registration. Classes are filling fast. Register early to get your choice of classes. Since this was the Year of Strong Catholic Parents, we are hoping that many of you would consider volunteering in the program. I promise you that your rewards will be great. We are in need of some very special volunteers to teach the faith. There are openings in grades for both the Sunday morning classes as well as Tuesday afternoon. If you are interested in knowing more about these opportunities, please call Aline at (773) for details. Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) is a process for those considering becoming Catholic. Specifically, it is: For those who are not baptized and are in the process of making a decision to become Catholic For those who were baptized and are in another faith and are thinking of becoming Catholic For those who were baptized Roman Catholic and have not received Eucharist and Confirmation The process is designed to assist those interested in Catholicism, to learn about our faith, our traditions, and our celebrations. Each person is invited to reflect on his/her own relationship with God and the faith community. We journey through this process together, assisting each other in our response to God s call. 7 Parish News COME HELP US THIS SUMMER AT THE FOOD PANTRY We need more help at the Albany Park Community Center Food Pantry at any of the following times this summer. Our Food Pantry is fully staffed and supported by volunteers from Queen of All Saints. Help us reach out to the needy and less fortunate in our midst. THURSDAYS - Bagging groceries - July 17 & 31, August 7 & 21 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. THURSDAYS - Bagging groceries and unload our delivery truck - July 10 & 24, August 14 & 28 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. We are open every Friday from 9 am to 12 noon to distribute the food. There are many jobs on Fridays from bagging groceries to filing to interviewing clients. All ages are welcomed to come help but children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Get a head start on your service hours. The Albany Park Community Center is located at 5101 N. Kimball one block south of Foster. The Sacrament of Reconciliation Saturday After the 8:00am Mass until all are heard To Register in the Parish Please contact the Rectory Office The Sacrament of Baptism Queen of All Saints rejoices in the incorporation of new members into the Body of Christ through the Sacrament of Baptism. If you are a registered parishioner, please come into the rectory during business hours to schedule your child's baptism. If it is not possible for you to come into the rectory, please call the rectory to make arrangements. If you are not a registered parishioner, please contact the parish in which you live in order to schedule your child's baptism. It is important that a child is baptized in the parish in which his/her family lives. Only in three special cases (grandparents are registered parishioners, previous children were baptized at Queen of All Saints, or parents were married at Queen of All Saints) will we consider scheduling the baptism here. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated two or three Sundays of the month, depending on the time of year, at 1:30 PM - call the rectory for the exact schedule. A Baptismal Preparation class for the parents is required. They are held on select Mondays at 7:30 PM in the Rectory and must also be scheduled in advance. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests. The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed.
