2 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL From the Pastor Last Saturday s 5PM Mass was a third grade Family Mass. That means that the third graders prepared themselves for their participation at Mass by reading the gospel and writing a little reflection on it. They joined me in the sanctuary for the homily during which I read some of their reflections on the gospel. The theme was generosity and the children had many, many good ideas on how they could be more generous like the poor old woman in the gospel. They also performed many of the ministries of the Mass such as being lectors, offertory representatives and ushers. The third grade class this year also learned a special song which they enthusiastically sang to the assembly from the choir loft during the preparation of the gifts. For the most part all of our Family Masses take this form. The concept of Family Masses grew out of the conversations among the members of the Queen of All Saints Parents Association (QASPA). They have now become vital parts of how our parish worships together. The effectiveness of our parish Family Masses earned QASPA a special distinguished award from the National Catholic Educational Association a few years ago. They would not be as successful as they are, of course, were it not for the leadership provided by the parents at these Family Masses. Last Saturday, for example, the Basilica was practically filled to capacity due to the presence of our third graders and their parents, siblings and, in some cases, grandparents as well. Several of those who regularly attend the 5PM Mass on Saturday often come up to me at the conclusion of the Mass and say how happy they are to see the children and their parents taking such active roles in the liturgy. Naturally I agree with them and am always grateful for the participation of the families and the leadership of QASPA. Attracting so many families to the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist is a great good that they accomplish. There is no doubt about that. There is one nagging feeling I have, however, after I celebrate a Family Mass. I have shared this feeling with the members of QASPA, and think it s time that I share it with a wider audience. The nagging feeling I have comes from the sense that the large numbers of parents and young families who attend the special Family Masses are not replicated at regular Sunday Masses throughout the year. I m delighted that so many families are active in the Family Masses, but what about the other Sundays of the year? Many of the families of the parish are very faithful to their obligation to attend Mass every Sunday. I applaud them and admire them. But sadly some are not. Is it possible that some parents come to Sunday Mass only when their children are involved in some special way? Surely the need to attend Mass every Sunday has deeper roots in us than just to watch our children take on a special role. The issue is more complicated than that. In our contemporary culture and society Sunday has become just another day for shopping and running errands. It simply doesn t have the significance of a real sabbath anymore, a day set aside for worship and rest. Families chase around on Sundays now even more than they do on the other days of the week. They have so much to do on weekends that going to Mass is frequently squeezed out of the picture by sports events, door buster sales and commitments of every kind. All this rushing around leaves very little time for worship and rest. At some point our culture and society will pay the price for giving priority to such trivial matters over such fundamental humanizing activities as prayer and rest and it will be a heavy price. I was especially frustrated last week when I received an on the Men s Club general distribution list that informed us that Queen of All Saints School girls basketball teams had done very well in a tournament run by a local Catholic high school. I was very happy for the girls and congratulated

3 them on Monday morning. I cheer them on as I do all our teams every chance I get. But my frustration was over the fact that some of the games were played on Sunday morning while Masses were going on in the Basilica and in the parish churches of all the other girls participating. The indicated that the games were played before a great crowd of 5 th, 6 th, and 7 th grade parents. I hope the parents got to Mass that Sunday? Something is wrong when a Catholic high school runs a basketball tournament for children in Catholic elementary schools that makes it very difficult for them to attend Sunday morning Mass in their own parishes. The organizers have so many other opportunities to schedule games. Do they have to gobble up even Sunday mornings? I m very grateful to the coaches and the parents who support and encourage our children to get involved in our athletic programs, but it disheartens me when sports seems to take precedence over Sunday Mass. Monsignor John Pollard St. Vincent de Paul Society Share Christmas The St. Vincent de Paul Society of Queen of All Saints is sponsoring its annual Share Christmas with the poor on the weekend of November 21st and 22nd. If a family wishes to do more or if someone wishing to participate does not get one of the names from the tree, they may bring in an unwrapped toy, items of clothing such as warm hats, gloves, scarves, socks, or a gift card to our collection the weekend of December 12th and 13th. The instructions for wrapping the tree gift items will be on the cards. Please attach the name cards securely to the front of the wrapped item. This is the only way we will know where and to whom the gift goes. Remember also to leave your name and telephone number on the card attached to the back of the name card. The St. Vincent de Paul Society thanks our parishioners for their past generosity and for all your support in our efforts to help those in need. Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 15,

Throughout the next few months, we are asking students at various grade levels to concentrate on a particular corporal or spiritual work of mercy. They will begin planning on how that chosen work of mercy is to be acted on in daily life. We encourage all families to do the same in their homes. Families are asked to gather around the spot they have designated in their homes as their holy door. Also, we have begun the annual practice of singing Christmas carols. The carols will be performed during the annual Christmas Pageant, December 13 th. Many of our classes are now focusing attention on the celebration of Advent. If your family does not have an Advent wreath, please consider coming to the Make and Take on November 28 th at 4PM. It is a wonderful family event to make a family wreath and gather around it during the next weeks leading to Christmas. These wreathes will be blessed at the start of the 5 PM Mass that evening. Grade 4 Family Mass Today, the 4 graders will lead us in prayer at the 9:30 Mass. Their theme is a lesson from the parable of the fig tree. Students will present leaves to be placed on a tree in the sanctuary Confirmation Enrollment Mass On November 21 st at the 5 PM Mass, candidates for Confirmation will be formally presented to the parish community. They will be submitting covenants during the Mass promising to intensely study, serve, and pray to receive Confirmation worthily. The soft surface on the playground is beyond repair and will be replaced. The boys and girls washrooms in the gym will be completely refurbished. If it is not possible for you to come into the rectory, please call the rectory to make arrangements. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated two or three Sundays of the month, depending on the time of year, at 1:30 PM - call the rectory for the exact schedule. A Baptismal Preparation class for the parents is required. They are held on select Mondays at 7:30 PM in the Rectory and must also be scheduled in advance. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests. The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament. Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 15,
