2 Parish News Lectors & Homebound Calendar Reminder Please let Paul know of any conflicts for the months of April, May and June. Please call the Rectory at or We need this information by Monday, March 13th. Thank you! URGENT REQUEST Our Illinois bishops are asking for your help in fighting taxpayer-funded abortions. House Bill 40 is the latest version of legislation that allows your tax money to pay for elective abortions for Medicaid recipients and state employees. It also allows tax money to go to grants to organizations that refer, counsel for, or perform abortions. Current law calls for those grants to go to organizations that assist women experiencing problem pregnancies. All three of these uses of taxpayer money are currently prohibited by Illinois law. All of our Illinois bishops have written letters to parishioners, asking them to fight HB 40. This bill is likely to come to a vote very soon, so there is an urgency to this information. The parishioners of Queen of All Saints Parish reside in several state representative districts. Please consider calling or writing your state representative and advise him to vote no on House Bill 40. Thank you, Queen of All Saints Basilica Respect Life Committee Religious Education Classes Classes are focusing on Lenten Prayer - traditionally this includes the Stations of the Cross. Worship aids designed for specific age groups are made available to assist the students to delve into the meaning of the Passion of Christ, and how it affects their life today. Thank you to all who are participating in our New Life for Old Bags project. The response you have made for the homeless is overwhelming. Keep bringing them in! We will continue collecting them throughout the season of Lent. Annual Youth Ministry Awards Banquet On Sunday, March 5 th, over 500 teens and their families from Vicariate II gathered to recognize the important work that teens have made in the life of the Church. We were most pleased to recommend four from our teen community to be recognized. Sergio Rodriguez and Jack Mullen received recognition in Community Service. They both participated in the annual Mission Trip through Catholic Heart Work Camp among many other parish and youth ministry events. Jessica Ramirez and Jackie Dolibois were recognized in Catechesis and Evangelization for their assistance in both 3 rd and 1 st Religious Education Classes. Included with our nominees, two other parishioners were recognized by their schools. Max Manfredini and Brandon Nguyen of Notre Dame High School, and Katie Clancy from Regina Dominican High School were among those receiving awards. We are very proud of these young people who continue to live out the Gospel values beyond the walls of their Queen of All Saints School and their R.E. experience. May they be an example to all of us of putting on Christ in our daily life. Congratulations! 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL

3 The Lenten Season is a time to become closer to God and strengthen your relationship with Him through reflection and prayer. The gospel according to Mark (11:24) states, Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Join your fellow parishioners by participating in the Lenten Prayer Tree Project located in the east alcove of the Basilica. Write a prayer, place it on a tree and in turn, take a prayer from the tree and pray for another person's prayers. Life Giving Water "Access to safe drinkable water is a human right... Our world has a grave social debt towards the poor who lack access to drinking water because they are denied the right to a life consistent with their inalienable dignity." ~ From Laudato Si' by Pope Francis In what ways does the commodification of water affect poor people in our own country? What actions can we take this Lent to act on behalf of those whose right to water is being threatened or denied? Immigration The QAS Social Justice Ministry would like to share with you a link from the Archdiocesan Office of Human Dignity and Solidarity, Immigration Office which includes the 2017 Lenten Prayer Calendar. We hope this calendar feeds your Lenten Prayers and reminds us to pray for the needs of immigrants: Domestic Violence Awareness We have many relationships in our lives. Lent calls us to fast and there are many ways we can fast that can strengthen our relationships and make them more loving and kind. Pope Francis suggests some of the fasts that will enhance our relationships with God and our neighbor - and even with ourselves! How will you fast this Lent? Fast from hurting words and say kind words. Fast from anger and be filled with patience. Fast from bitterness and fill your heart with joy. Fast from selfishness and be compassionate to others. Fast from grudges and be reconciled. Fast from words and be silent so you can listen. ~ Pope Francis, Ash Wednesday 2016 Second Sunday of Lent March 12,

9 Name: Mark Abraham, Class of 1988 High School: St. Ignatius College Prep QAS Alumni Spotlight College: Loyola University - Chicago Graduate School: George Washington University Law School What are your best memories of QAS? We used to have Intramural Basketball that was a chance for the entire school to compete in an annual fun basketball tournament. Since I wasn t talented enough (or tall enough) to make the school team, it was a great opportunity to play in some competitive games. It seemed like the gym bleachers were always packed and it really brought our whole school together. I remember devouring homemade desserts (e.g., Rice Krispy treats) that were made by our moms. There was even an annual art contest where Sister Charlotte picked the best designs that made it onto everyone s T-shirts (thanks Mom). The only thing better than winning the championship one year (with the help of Tom Reardon if my memory serves me correctly) was being able to coach my younger brother, Patrick s team. We lost in the championship game but I m pretty sure my brother got some serious playing time. What is your favorite part of the campus? My favorite part of the campus is the Basilica. There are only two sacraments that I haven t received there and it has so many deep and powerful memories. I remember competing with some of my classmates to sing songs during school Mass at the top of our lungs. Nobody can say our hearts were not in it. I was an altar server at my soccer coach s wedding. I married my beautiful college sweetheart (Tracy), baptized two out of our three children at this magnificent House and sang On Eagles Wings at the funeral masses for each of my parents, who worked so hard to give us this opportunity. Laughter, tears of happiness, and healing tears of sadness mixed with the promise of eternal life. Not sure what more you could ask for. Why are you raising your family here at QAS? QAS is a special place. On top of being located in one of the most beautiful areas of the city, it is the people of Queen of All Saints that I have met on this journey that made me want to raise my family here. My best friend from QAS (David Behof) now Loyola Academy s Asst. Track and Cross Country coach - still goes to church here. QAS has one of the largest and most active Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Girl Scout programs in the City of Chicago. The dedication and passion that these scout leaders have invested in developing our young boys and girls is staggering. How many young boys get to spend hours building a wooden Pinewood Derby track with their fathers and scout leaders in David Kuhn s garage in the middle of winter? It has been awe-inspiring watching these boys develop into mature young men. Learning to help others and give back to their communities is something that you cannot put a price tag on. The QAS Men s Club is filled with salt of the Earth men who are so welcoming and inviting. In my opinion, they are one of the bedrocks of this Parish. It is very difficult to find an event or program that they are not involved with in some way. To give yourself to others without counting the cost is the definition of sacrifice and an Ignatian motto that the Men of this Club fully embody. To be able to have your children witness this example is priceless. Last but certainly not least, the teachers and administration at QAS lie at the heart of why I wanted to raise my family here. While QAS is a strong academic school, that is not, its defining feature. It is the love and compassion that the teachers give every day (and night) to help mold our children into young men and women for others. I am pretty sure it is not money that inspires our teachers to work at a Catholic grade school. I have seen the energy that QAS teachers have poured into our children s lives. You can tell they really do care about each and every one of our children - that is not something to be taken for granted. I believe it is that tireless commitment and love that ultimately shapes our children s moral compasses and motivates them to do better, to be better. What makes QAS unique? QAS takes what I consider to be the best of the Catholic Church (unconditional love, sacrifice, and faith) and injects it into a community of believers. Nobody here is perfect. We are all human. We pick each other up when we are down and when we hurt. We help to guide each other in what we think is the right direction. We are here for each other one family. Families sometimes disagree but they are stronger together than apart. QAS is one strong family, indeed. We are blessed to be a part of this. Second Sunday of Lent March 12,

11 f tewardship 2nd Sunday of Lent March 12, 2017 Queen of All Saints Basilica Committed to Christ, sharing God's gifts, building the Church together Stewardship - QAS Students in action for others Our QAS students have been working on the 3 Pillars of Lent: prayer, almsgiving and fasting. During Catholic Schools Week the students attended presentations on the Well of Mercy and Misericordia and were inspired by community members who put their faith into action. The students then made generous donations to the Well of Mercy and Misericordia. The students also participated in making over 1,000 Valentine cards and donating over 500 toys and books to children at Lurie Children s Hospital. On Ash Wednesday, they kept silent in the school hallways as a reflection for the beginning of the Holy Season. The students also worked on a school wide project called "I Will and discussed ways to incorporate almsgiving, fasting, and prayer into their daily lives in Lent. They wrote a promise on a card and placed it in a basket in the classroom to serve as a reminder to the students of their promises. The students are also joining in on the parish-wide Prayer Tree by adding their own intentions to the tree and in turn praying for the intentions of other parishioners. Go forth from the land of your kinsfolk and from your father s house to a land that I will show you. - Genesis 12:1 God calls all of us to leave behind our old ways and to follow Him, placing our complete trust in Him. Some of the old ways that we may have to struggle to leave behind might be materialism, selfishness and greed. Yet God promises to show us a new land and a better way to live. If it is not possible for you to come into the rectory, please call the rectory to make arrangements. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated two or three Sundays of the month, depending on the time of year, at 1:30 PM - call the rectory for the exact schedule. A Baptismal Preparation class for the parents is required. They are held once a month and must also be scheduled in advance. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests. The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament. Second Sunday of Lent March 12,
