2 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL From the Pastor Today Catholic Schools Week begins not just here in Queen of All Saints Parish, but throughout the country. It provides all of us an opportunity to thank the teachers, administrators and staffs for their dedication to the mission of Catholic education. Schools will observe the week with special Masses, community service projects, academic and artistic showcases, and athletic and family events. At Queens we will celebrate our Catholic Schools Week Mass this Sunday and there will be an open house in the school immediately following. The 2016 theme is Catholic Schools: Learn, Serve, Lead, Succeed. The theme encompasses several concepts that are at the heart of a Catholic education. First, schools are learning communities. Service, leadership and successful outcomes are three measures by which any Catholic school can and should be judged. Effective service programs, evident community leadership and a tradition of proven academic achievement should be hallmarks of any Catholic educational institution. I especially want to thank the parents of Queen of All Saints Parish who over the years have chosen to send their children to Queen of All Saints School at considerable personal sacrifice. The parent organizations, such as the School Council, QASPA, the Men s Club and the growing number of Alumni, also deserve our gratitude for the truly heroic work they do to keep Queen of All Saints School accessible and affordable to as many families as possible. At parent meetings I frequently remind parents that, when they presented their children for the Sacrament of Baptism, they also pledged to do all in their power to raise their children in the Catholic faith. This is their solemn obligation. Good Catholic family life is the most fundamental means of handing on the faith. A number of reliable studies over the years, however, have consistently indicated that a good Catholic school is also one of the most effective ways to hand on the faith. A vibrant parish life can also greatly contribute to the distinctively Catholic character of a child s development There are many reasons for parents in the area to choose to send their children to Queen of All Saints School. First of all, the children of our school receive an excellent education that is both academically demanding and authentically Catholic. There is no reason why a school that is distinctively Catholic cannot also have high academic standards. We at Queen of All Saints School constantly try to achieve both these objectives simultaneously. Second, our school children learn in a safe and secure environment in which each individual is respected because they are a child of God and each one s character is developed according to the teachings of Christ and the Church. Third, we do all we can to ensure that the Christian virtues and values that are espoused in the homes of the children are fostered in the school. And fourth, the children of Queen of All Saints School are free to learn about their faith, a subject that other schools cannot teach. I frequently say with pride that in Queen of All Saints School we can inform the minds of the children; we can help form their consciences; and uniquely with God s grace we can transform their souls. Other schools cannot make all those claims. I am especially proud this year of the growing number of parents in the parish who are deeply engaged in the life of our school. Parents are the first teachers of the faith to their children. Just as they teach their children to brush their teeth and tie their shoes, they also teach their children the ways of the faith more by what they do than by what they say. Catholic schools are communities of faith, knowledge and service all three of which are nurtured first in the home. Happy Catholic Schools Week. God bless you. Monsignor John Pollard

6 Music of the Masters Concert Series Presents MUSIC FOR A GREAT SPACE The Music of Michael McGlynn Friday, February 2 7:30 pm The choir and instrumentalists of Queen of All Saints Basilica will present an evening of music by the Irish composer Michael McGlynn. Michael, Artistic Director and Composer for the famed choral ensemble ANÚNA, is flying in from Dublin for this event and will be accompanied by two members of ANÚNA, tenor Zachary Trouton, also a native of Ireland, and American baritone Nick Stoppel. The program will include several of Michael s compositions, as well as Irish selections representative of music that serves as the inspiration for Michael s works. The evening promises to be a special and somewhat unique event in that rather than the usual run through of an evening s worth of musical items, time will be taken throughout the evening during which Michael will share his insights into the influence of traditional and popular music of Ireland on his compositions as well as his perspective on his own approach toward the art of choral singing in general. Additionally, Zachary will offer his reflections on stylistic considerations for the performance of music deeply rooted in the Irish musical tradition. Also, special about this evening is that prior to the actual program, all who plan to attend the program are invited to an open rehearsal led by Michael. The rehearsal will begin at 6 pm, during which time Michael will work with members of the Basilica Choir in preparation for the performance. This is an opportunity to see and hear the preparatory work that goes on behind the scenes, led by such an accomplished composer and director. The rehearsal will conclude with a Question and Answer session in which everyone in the room will have an opportunity to ask Michael questions about his compositions, his approach toward choral music in general or any other questions that come to mind. The schedule for the evening is as follows: 6:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. rehearsal in the basilica 7:00 p.m. 7:15 p.m. Q&A with Michael McGlynn 7:15 p.m. 7:30 p.m. Prelude music in preparation of the program 7:30 p.m. The start of the program The program is without ticket and without charge. A freewill offering will be accepted. 6 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL

7 About Michael McGlynn Michael McGlynn is the Artistic Director and Composer for the famed choral ensemble ANÚNA. His compositions are rooted in the tradition of Irish unaccompanied song (sean nós). Through his work with ANÚNA he has created a unique form of choral music that has grown from the singular nature of the group. In November Michael received the prestigious University College Dublin s Arts and Humanities Award for his achievements in developing an Irish form of ensemble singing that wove convincing connections between the ancient singing traditions and the literature of his homeland. Today ANÚNA is regarded as one of the finest vocal groups in the world and Michael s compositions have been performed (by) Grammy-winning ensembles AllMusic writes of Michael as being...among the ranks of the most accomplished contemporary choral composers...notable for a sophisticated compositional technique that s always tied to appealing emotional directness. 8 Parish News A Lenten Invitation Eucharistic Adoration Because of Christ s love for His Church, we have the true body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. To honor this miracle, Queen of All Saints will have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on Fridays in Lent. Every Friday in Lent 9:30am to 6pm Benedict Center Chapel The tradition of Eucharistic Adoration has dated back to the 4th Century where people prayed before the Eucharist exposed in the monstrance. St. John Paul II asks Catholics: Let us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in Adoration. This Lent, please consider spending a half-hour or hour with Jesus in the Eucharist, to pray to Him, to listen to Him, to rest in Him, and to keep Him company. We would like to have at least three adorers/volunteers present during Adoration. You can sign up online at You will also have the opportunity to sign up after the Masses on the weekends of Feb 4th & 11th. Walk-ins, of course, are welcome! 9 f tewardship Queen of All Saints Basilica Committed to Christ, sharing God's gifts, building the Church together Brothers and sisters: I should like you to be free of anxieties. - 1 Corinthians 7:32 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time January 28, 2018 How much anxiety do we bring upon ourselves by constantly worrying about not having enough or attaining more things? God won t necessarily give you everything you want, but He will provide everything you need. Try this use the word pray instead of the word worry in the future. Stewardship and Catholic Education As we enter Catholic Schools Week here at Queen of All Saints, we recall that the ministry of teaching and passing on our faith has always been at the core of our parish s commitment to continue the mission of Jesus. It is a story of generosity and sacrifice by parents, family members and our parish community itself. Catholic education is not an isolated ministry of our parish. Rather, it is an essential part of our parish mission. From the very beginning of our parish, the education of our young has been a priority. Our school buildings were funded and built long before our church was built evidence of the critical importance our parish has always placed on the formation of our children in their academic and spiritual lives. It should be obvious that our school is Catholic but it helps to remember this part of its Mission Statement: Queen of All Saints School provides a dynamic, Catholic environment where children experience the Gospel message, and faith and knowledge grow. Recognizing that parents are the primary educators, this mission is accomplished in a partnership with parents, clergy, faculty and staff, and the Faith Community of the parish. We are proud that our school combines the very best of academic excellence and character formation, and we give our deep thanks to the generations of parishioners, teachers and parents whose dedication and generosity has built our school into what it is today a superb choice for the education of our young in their spiritual, intellectual, physical and emotional development. Do we have your current contact information? Many households have cut the cord and rely only on their cell phones. Please us your current phone number to qasoffice@qasparish.org. If it is not possible for you to come into the rectory, please call the rectory to make arrangements. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated two or three Sundays of the month, depending on the time of year, at 1:30 PM - call the rectory for the exact schedule. A Baptismal Preparation class for the parents is required. They are held once a month and must also be scheduled in advance. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests. The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament. Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January 28,
