3 Parish News Get a head start on next year s uniform wardrobe and come to the uniform exchange. This is a great way for new students and those just entering kindergarten to start out. For anyone who does not have uniforms to exchange, there is a $5.00 charge for each item. Various items that may be exchanged or purchased are: jumpers, skirts, pants, skorts, shirts/blouses, sweaters/vests, gym clothes and Girl Scout uniforms. Please make sure all uniforms are cleaned and pressed, on hangers and with sizes clearly marked on the front. It is a privileged opportunity to exercise an important ministry in the Church. Training sessions will take place in the Basilica. You only need to attend one of them. Sessions for training and formation for NEW Extraordinary Ministers are scheduled on: Tuesday, June 5th at 7:00pm Saturday, June 9th at 12:30pm The ministry is open to any practicing Catholic, high school age or older. 4 Parish News Religious Education News We are now undertaking ongoing registration for the fall classes. Anyone needing registration forms may call the RE Office ( ) during regular office hours. You will find us on the second floor of the Benedict Center Monday through Thursday from 10 AM until 3PM. The office will switch to summer hours after June 7. If you are a new student please bring in all sacrament records at the time of registration and medical information with you. Transfer students will be asked to produce transcripts from their previous parish. Help Needed We are most grateful to all our volunteers particularly our catechists who gave of their time to share their most treasured gifts, that is their faith. We are always looking for special people to join our faculty. So if you are interested or know of someone who would like to be part of our team of catechists, please call Aline for more information. There is a need for both Sunday morning for classes in Grades K, 1 st, 3 rd, 7 th and 8 th, as well as our Tuesday afternoon classes for Grades 5 and 7. If you would like to help in some other capacity (ex. office help, attendance clerk), give us a call. We will find the perfect spot for you. Vacation Bible School News We will be conducting onsite registration this Sunday, June 3 rd after the 8, 9:30 11, and 12:30 Masses. Final day to register will be Sunday, June 11 after the morning Masses. Just stop by the registration tent. There will no registrations accepted after this date. Camp begins June 18 th and runs through June 22 nd. These packets contained many helpful opportunities for prospective candidates to get started over the summer weeks. 6 Parish News Please join us for the 27th annual Hunger Walk. Registration is at 7am, Step-Off is at 8:15am. If you can t walk with us, make a donation and 100% of it will help support the Albany Park Community Center Food Pantry that is run by parishioners from Queen of All Saints. We have operated the food pantry as a community outreach ministry for more than 15 years and currently serve between 1,700 and 2,200 each month. 7 Basilica Portal The center of the portal, the most extended portion of the façade, is paneled and carved in limestone, embellished with various symbolic and significant decorations. In fact, it is here, that one is introduced immediately to the underlying themes and motifs that inspired the creation and ornamentation of the whole edifice. 1. The lancet or pointed arch Not only in the great shadowed arch, which frames the stately window in the upper portion of the façade, but also, recessed under the circular archivolt which spans the doorway, the tapering lancet arch is to be found, carved in bas-relief at the peak of the seven panels of stone, forming the tympanum, or upper part of the doorway. The lancet arch, truly Gothic in design, is to be found in every portion of the Basilica, from the foremost wall in the façade to the marble wainscoting which embellishes the rear wall of the sanctuary. 2. Regal Cresting Above the center mullion, or divider of the doorway, a stone shield looks down, plain and unadorned. Four other escutcheons are to be found in the stone panels of the façade, on either side of the Crucifixion statuary group. Each shield, with a carved design, has a symbolic meaning. From left to right, the shield with the cross, is the symbol of faith; that with the anchor, is the symbol of hope; the third, with a heart, the symbol of charity; the last, with the vase, the vessel of grace. Escutcheons and shields, such as these, accepted signs of royalty, are to be found in the ornamentation throughout the Basilica; signs of the Queenship of Mary are carved in the stone on the exterior and they adorn the nave and chapels. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated on the 2nd, 3rd & 4th Sunday of each month at 1:30 PM. Please come into the rectory to schedule the baptism for your child. Prior to the baptism, the parents are invited to attend a baptismal preparation session. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests.
