2 From the Pastor Next Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. The time has now come in the Church year for the solemn observance of the great central act of salvation history, the redemption of the human race by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In the Roman Rite, the beginning of the forty days of penance is marked with the austere symbol of ashes which are used in today's liturgy. The use of ashes is a survival from an ancient rite according to which converted sinners submitted themselves to public penance. At the beginning of Lent, on Ash Wednesday, ashes are blessed during Mass, after the homily. This solemn blessing and sprinkling with holy water obviously is more than a reminder of death; it is rather a pledge and reminder of resurrection. The blessed ashes are then imposed on the faithful as a sign of conversion, penance, fasting and human mortality. To each one he says: Turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel. (Mark 1:15) or Remember that you are dust, and unto dust you shall return. (Cf. Gen. 3:19) The ashes themselves are made from the palms used at the previous Passion Sunday ceremonies. Blessed ashes are a sacramental. That means that they are a sacred sign. Their reception with humility is a sign of penance. We wear them publicly to acknowledge our need to atone for our sinfulness. As hard as this is to admit, we are all sinners and Lent is the season of the Church year when we have the opportunity to get in closer touch with our personal limitations, our dependence of God and our need for forgiveness. The act of receiving ashes symbolizes our fragility, mortality, and our need to be redeemed by the mercy of God. Far from being a merely external act, the Church has retained the use of ashes to symbolize that attitude of internal penance to which all the baptized are called during Lent. From the very early times the commemoration of the approach of Christ's passion and death was observed by a period of self-denial. On Ash Wednesday in the early days, the Pope went barefoot to St. Sabina s Church in Rome to begin with holy fasts the exercises of Christian warfare, that as we do battle with the spirits of evil, we may be protected by the help of self-denial. Here at Queen of All Saints Basilica we will have Masses at 6:30, 7:30, 8:45 AM and a Mass for our school children at 1:45 PM. In addition we will have Liturgical Services of the Word at 12 Noon, 4:30 and 7:30 PM. Ashes will be distributed after the homily at each of these liturgies. Throughout the season of Lent we will also have other devotions and opportunities for prayer and spiritual development. Father George Kane will be presenting an adult faith formation series commemorating the 50 th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council on February 28, March 7, 14 and 21 and April 4 and 11 at 7 PM in the Basilica. Deacon Mike Monnelly will lead The Little Rock Scripture Study every Tuesday morning and evening in the Benedict Center. The Women s Spiritual Spa, Holy Places along the Way: My Spiritual Geography, will be presented by Kieran Lyons on Thursday, February 28 and Thursday, March 21. A Lenten Holy Hour will be held in the Basilica beginning at 7 PM every Monday evening. The Way of the Cross will be walked every Friday in Lent at 2:15 PM with the school children and 4 PM with parishioners in general. The Living Stations will be presented on Friday, March 22 at 2:15 PM. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered during the Lenten Holy Hour from 7:30-8:30 every Monday evening and on Saturday mornings beginning at 8:30. Queen of All Saints Elizabeth Ministry also offers Lenten Prayer Evenings on all the Mondays in Lent in the Benedict Center. Please consult the bulletin for more specific details on all these opportunities for Lenten prayer and devotion. God bless you. Monsignor John Pollard 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL

12 Medallions in the Window of Apparitions The lower portion of the window is divided by subject matter into two layers, each one containing four medallions, depicting the Apparitions of Our Blessed Lady on notable miraculous occasions. The size of the medallions makes this type of fenestration unique, for it is unusual to have such large space set aside for one single image. Each medallion recreates a scene in the past in which Our Blessed Mother appeared to some gifted souls; in each case she is portrayed in the accurate costume which she wore, appropriate to time and place. In the lowest panel at the base of each lancet an angel stands guard, each one a symbol of colorful artistry, boasting a glowing orange halo around its head, with its wings in blue standing out against a background of deeper blue and faint rose. Above that, in the first row of medallions, the images from left to right are: 1. Our Lady of Lourdes, dressed in white, with a blue sash around her waist, standing on a bed of roses. The shield beneath the image, three gold Fleursde-lis upon a deep blue field, represents France. 2. Our Lady of Guadalupe, dressed in a garment of deepest blue and rich lavender. The rays of the sun completely surround the image. The coat of arms of Mexico adorn the shield underneath, a gold eagle on a white field. 3. Our Lady of Czestochowa, ornately crowned and distinguished by a halo, wearing an attractively blue gown, holding the Christ Child in her arms. The shield of Poland is centered in the intermediate panel beneath. 4. Our Lady of La Salette (1846), vested as a strange lady resplendent in a strange costume. Crowned, yet wearing a peasant dress, Our Lady looks resplendent in pink and soft yellow. The shield at the bottom, red, white, and blue bears the Cross of Lorraine in the center panel. In the lower row of medallions, the images from left to right are: 1. Our Lady of the Snows, (350) the Madonna and Child, dressed in blue against a deep red background. An occasional snowflake is visible in the heavens above. The shield of Italy, a white star on a white field, adorns the intermediate panel beneath the image. 2. Our Lady of Knock (1879) wearing a royal green gown, with touches of green in her cloak, stands upon a bed of green shamrocks. The shield at the bottom, a gold harp upon a blue field, represents Ireland. 12 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL

13 3. Our Lady of Fatima (1917) resplendent with the sun whirling behind her, stands upon a patch of green shrubbery. The shield of Portugal ornaments the lower panel. 4. Our Lady of Einsiedeln (948) crowned, holding a sceptre in her right hand and her Divine Son in the other; she is a vision of loveliness garbed in a beautiful robe. The shield of the Swiss, a white cross on a red field, lies beneath the medallion. The recurring theme of the decoration of the Basilica is found in the upper portion of the window. In the area above the medallions, set against a background of deep sky blue, a field of red roses blossoms across the width of the four lancets. Within each circular design formed by the open stone tracery, bright white stars stand out, like the Star of the Sea they symbolize. And a field of graceful white lilies flourishes higher still, against a variegated background of ruby-red, fresh green, and sky blue. Within the arch of the window at the peak, set in a circular limestone frame is an extensive and elaborate quatrefoil. The figure of Our Blessed Lady stand supreme over all, clothed in white as the Immaculate Conception. In a bright red band which encircles her is the prayer: O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee. In the lower cusp of the quatrefoil, at the feet of Our Lady is the traditional bright, striped shield of the United States. The complete theme of the window, therefore, is filial and patriotic. Our Blessed Mother, the Patroness of the United States, is enshrined above the shield of the country, bestowing her motherly care on its citizens, and they, in turn, extend to her the filial devotion. Descendents for the most part of foreign lands which have been blessed with miraculous apparitions of Mary, they have brought their owns traditions and love of her and blended them into the culture of America.
