2 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL From the Pastor Yesterday Queen of All Saints Basilica celebrated one of the most joyous events in any year, the First Holy Communion of its children, especially amid the alleluias of the Easter season. One of the ways a parish like ours is able to sustain the joy of the Easter season is to celebrate our children s First Holy Communion. It was a very beautiful celebration indeed and a large number of people collaborated in order to plan and celebrate our parish First Holy Communion with dignity, reverence and grace. The parents of the children should be the first ones thanked. On the day of their child s baptism they sought to have their children receive God s own life and be incorporated into the life of the Church. You have asked to have your child baptized, the priest said to them. In doing so you are accepting the responsibility of training them in the practice of the faith, he continued. It must be your duty to bring them up to keep God s commandments as Christ taught us, by loving God and our neighbor. He then asks them, Do you clearly understand what you are undertaking? Parents are the first teachers of their children in the ways of the faith. They teach their children by what they say and what they do. By living Christian values in their homes, by providing their children with formal education in the Catholic faith through either our parish religious education program or school and by attending Mass with their children every Sunday parents fulfill the responsibility that they freely accepted on the day they presented their children for baptism. I am very grateful to all the parents for sharing the Catholic faith with their children and accompanying them to the Lord s Table of the Eucharist. Children also learn the ways of faith from grandparents, godparents, brothers and sisters and other extended family members. Many came from great distances to be present at the First Communions yesterday and, just as they had encouraged the children s growth in faith that brought them to the Lord s Table, they were alongside them as they received the Body and Blood of Christ for the first time. I was delighted to see and meet so many of the extended family members of our first communicants. I was glad to welcome them to join us frequently at Queens as the children continue to grow in their faith and be nourished by the bread from heaven. Teachers and catechists are the parents trusted partners in the religious formation of their children. I want to thank Elizabeth Adamczyk, Linda Carbone, Santina Harris, Marizel Abad, Ellen Brady and her son, Bill, Jane Kolf, Melanie McAllister and Sheila Chovanek for their many hours of dedicated and generous service given in the preparation of the children for their First Communion. I also want to thank Paul Scavone for directing the practices and preparing all the details of the celebrations themselves. Erika Tate skillfully coordinated the whole event and Ken Sotak masterfully directed the choir and musicians. I am grateful to them and to Father Simon for presiding at one of the First Communion Masses and to Father Campana for joining us at the altar for each. It s a great privilege for all of us to welcome the children to a deeper initiation into the Body of Christ. Today the children are invited to don their First Communion clothes to crown the Mother of God and the Mother of the Church. I can think of no better way to honor the Blessed Mother. God bless you. Monsignor John Pollard

6 Parish News PLEASE NOTE: WEEKDAY MASS SCHEDULE CHANGE Beginning Monday, May 14 th Mass at Queen of All Saints Basilica will be celebrated Monday through Friday at 6:30am and 8:30am. After the careful consideration of the Pastoral Staff and consultation with those who ordinarily attend the weekday morning Masses in the Basilica, it was decided to eliminate the 7:30 am Mass and change the time of the 8:45 am Mass to 8:30am. The Saturday morning 8:00am Mass followed by the Sacrament of Reconciliation as well as the Saturday Mass of Anticipation at 5:00 pm and the full schedule of Sunday Masses remain unchanged at this time. The retirement of Father Conyers, Monsignor Prist s move of residence and the loss of one assigned associate pastor has reduced the number of priests now available to celebrate Mass. Our new pastor-designate, Father Simon, and I collaborated on this decision and have together concluded that it is the most prudent response to the present circumstances. We ask for your understanding and support. Monsignor John Pollard Pastor Remember your baby s Baptism? Your parish family remembers! Any family that has had a baby baptized at Queen of All Saints in the past year May of 2017-June 2018 is invited to celebrate those baptisms together. Save the date: Sunday, June 3, 2018, 9:30 Mass in the basilica followed by a reception in the school cafeteria. A continental breakfast will be served. Invitations will be ed soon. Please be sure to RSVP! Religious Education News Registration for the 2018/2019 year is open! Please call for additional information, or visit to download the forms. We also need catechists for next year. Specifically Saturday mornings 9:00 to 10:30am(Kindergarten through 4th grade); Tuesday evenings 5:00 to 6:30pm (1st & 2nd grade); and Tuesday nights 7:00 to 8:30pm (7th & 8th graders). 6 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL

13 f tewardship Queen of All Saints Basilica Committed to Christ, sharing God's gifts, building the Church together 6th Sunday of Easter May 6, 2018 This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends JOHN 15:12-13 Do you love Jesus? Do you consider Him your friend? Jesus says that if we love Him we would be willing to offer whatever we have to Him, not because we want praise and glory, but simply because we love Him. Does your giving seem mechanical out of obligation or do you share freely out of love? Stewardship Understanding our Parish Finances We rely on three main sources of funds: Sundays, Holidays, UPP This is our regular revenue and is by far the largest source of funds to pay for our parish operations. In a sense, this is what keeps the lights on. by paying for our staff, our routine repairs and maintenance, and the other day to day costs of running the parish. Long-Term Savings We are blessed with savings resulting from the generosity of the past, including parish and school endowments. The earnings from these accounts is used to supplement our regular revenue to balance the budget and, on occasion, to pay for extraordinary repairs. We have drawn upon those savings deeply to meet our financial obligations resulting from the Basilica ceiling project, and now need to take steps to replenish those savings. Capital Campaign Our From Generation To Generation drive will be used to make our older parish buildings more suitable for today s and tomorrow s needs, including making better use of space for school needs and for the needs of our increasing numbers of lay ministries. Our upcoming May 18 UPP event is a critical part of our normal annual revenues. We depend on it to meet our operating budget, as we do our Sunday and Holyday collections. Please become a generous supporter of the UPP and help our parish remain a vibrant and healthy faith community, with ministries that support all of us at all points of our lives. We believe that a well-informed parish membership deserves an explanation of parish finances. For our financial statement covering 7/1/16 to 6/30/17 see our November 5, 2017 bulletin, available on our parish website at qasparish.org. April 16 to 22, 2018 Sunday Stewardship Donation Type Amount Users Envelopes $16, Loose Donation $3, n/a Elect. Giving $6, Total $26, YTD Total $1,146, Our Basilica Repair Work Continues We have now completed work on replacing the ceiling above the choir loft. This required a special scaffolding as well as the disassembling of the organ itself. The organ is being reassembled and will be in full service shortly. We will soon begin repairs of some water damage around the transept windows, including replacing the caulk around the windows as well as minor repairs to some of the support rods holding the windows in place. The deteriorated marble behind the side altars has been removed and will be replaced with a modern lightweight replacement material similar to what was used in the sanctuary behind the main altar a few years ago. Currently there is a temporary substitute in place. Work on the bell tower is likely to begin later this year. Is it time to join your fellow parishioners who have already made the move to electronic giving? It s safe, convenient and dependable. Just go to the parish webpage at qasparish.org, click on the GiveCentral logo and follow the prompts. Are you receiving our monthly parish newsletter? It s a great way to keep track of the many ways we can participate in the worship ministries, social activities, and stewardship opportunities in our parish life.
