2 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL From the Pastor I had not even officially begun my ministry as pastor of Queen of All Saints when I was invited to the United Parish Program s Field of Dreams eight years ago. What a night it was. I was overwhelmed, first of all, by the enormous tent on the field and then by the warm and friendly welcome of the people. What an initiation. My first UPP was a baptism by immersion. I knew so little then, but I have come to know much more over the past eight years. I now look very much forward to it every year. In fact this annual gathering of the Queen of All Saints clans is just three weeks from now. What I didn t know at the time was that the Field of Dreams was the only fund raiser of the year for the parish. What I didn t know at the time was that all the ministries, groups and organizations of the parish benefit from the proceeds of the event. What I didn t know at the time was that the funds raised at the Field of Dreams was a crucial component of the parish s operating budget. From this perspective the enthusiasm of the parishioners for the success of the event was not only understandable but admirable. They expressed their love for the parish and all its outreach ministries by encouraging everyone on the Field of Dreams to step up to the plate and do their part. As the year unfolded, I began to realize just how important the Field of Dreams is for the life of Queen of All Saints Parish. There are over forty ministries, groups and organizations that this parish offers the community. All of these initiatives are funded out of the proceeds from the Field of Dreams. Queen of All Saints School, our Parish Religious Education Program, our program of religious education for the developmentally disabled and our adult catechumenate program are partially funded by the Field of Dreams. Our baptismal preparation program, Bereavement Ministry, Elizabeth Ministry, Homebound Ministry, the Saint Vincent DePaul Program and several other Social Justice ministries benefit from the Field of Dreams. Our parish social life also depends heavily on support from the Field of Dreams. The Oktoberfest welcomes hundreds of people from the community to good food, lively music and a great time all for no charge. Likewise the Spring Barbecue gathers just as many of our families for an afternoon of enjoyment again without cost. In addition, the activities sponsored by our parent association and our Filipino American Community Association, which are so important for building up the community of faith, are partially funded by the Field of Dreams. Our generous outreach to those in need also depends on the Field of Dreams as well. I knew none of this eight years ago. I did not know how much of the vibrancy and vitality of this parish family flows directly from our Field of Dreams. I thought it was just a four square acre plot of land that dramatically set off one of the most beautiful churches in the country. That would ordinarily be enough to justify its presence. But the field is far more than that. It has become the premier gathering space for the parish social events, sporting events and even cultural events like our Ravinia nights. Our field doesn t just produce green grass; it produces the fertile soil from which a lively people can build themselves with God s grace into the Body of Christ. That s why the United Parish Program deserves the untold hours of work on the part of the organizers and workers. That s why it deserves the generous financial support of every person in the parish. Raise the Paddle has become a crucial component of our UPP. The first year we vastly improved the technology program of our school through the funds raised during the Raise the Paddle section of the evening. The next year we renovated the school cafeteria. The year after that we put new bleachers in the gym and the year following we purchased a new stage curtain and made other substantial improvements to the look of the gym. Last year we gutted the Jubilee Room and repurposed and outfitted it as a state of the art Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Laboratory. All of these projects were direct

3 results of the Raise the Paddle initiative and all were completed in time for the start of school the following September. This year funds from Raise the Paddle will be used to replace as many windows as we can in the classrooms of the Lemont building. It costs $12,000 to replace the windows in each classroom. Every dollar raised in the Raise the Paddle will be matched, so if we raise $36,000 during Raise the Paddle, it will be matched with another $36,000 so we can replace the windows in six classrooms. The overall financial goal for this year s Field of Dreams is $275,000. That s an ambitious objective, but the hopes and dreams of this wonderful parish are ambitious as well. If you haven t already purchased your ticket, be advised that the ticket price increases as of May 4 th. And it s not too late to be a sponsor, purchase raffle tickets, take out an advertisement in the gala s program book or volunteer to help. If you re asked to help, please be as generous as you possibly can be. I look forward to seeing you on May 18 th. God bless you. 4 Parish News PLEASE NOTE: WEEKDAY MASS SCHEDULE CHANGE Beginning Monday, May 14 th Mass at Queen of All Saints Basilica will be celebrated Monday through Friday at 6:30am and 8:30am. After the careful consideration of the Pastoral Staff and consultation with those who ordinarily attend the weekday morning Masses in the Basilica, it was decided to eliminate the 7:30 am Mass and change the time of the 8:45 am Mass to 8:30am. The Saturday morning 8:00am Mass followed by the Sacrament of Reconciliation as well as the Saturday Mass of Anticipation at 5:00 pm and the full schedule of Sunday Masses remain unchanged at this time. The retirement of Father Conyers, Monsignor Prist s move of residence and the loss of one assigned associate pastor has reduced the number of priests now available to celebrate Mass. Our new pastor-designate, Father Simon, and I collaborated on this decision and have together concluded that it is the most prudent response to the present circumstances. We ask for your understanding and support. Monsignor John Pollard Pastor To: All Babies Baptized at QAS in the last year Hi! We remember your baptism and want to celebrate it with you and your family! Please come to the 9:30 Mass on the morning of June 3rd and then come to the school cafeteria for a reception. You will meet other babies and their families! Invitations will be ed soon. Tell your family to RSVP cuz you want to come!! Questions? Call Carole at the rectory. 5 School Council Elections Cast your vote in the vestibule after every Mass this weekend Kristin Vasilj: As a member of the School Council, I look forward to supporting the school s continued growth. I believe my background in writing and marketing will prove beneficial as we look for ways to improve administration-parent-student communications. I would also advocate for increased health and safety messaging and programs for the students and the school community. Beth Ryan: My objective would be to assist in the continued improvement of our school through establishing a strong parent & faculty relationship. This can be further developed through encouraging parents and teachers using technology. Thomas A. Reardon: My parents moved into the Sauganash neighborhood in My siblings and I have had the great privilege of attending QAS Grammar School in the 70s & 80s. As a proud alumnus of the Class of 1987, I now live in the very same neighborhood I was raised. Currently, I volunteer my time at QAS as a co-head football coach on the JV football team with coach Tim Lynch. My objective is to be open, honest, and transparent. I work collaboratively with others focusing on a common goal. Dave Manning: As an alumnus of QAS, I believe I can provide a unique perspective and shared experience with other QAS alumni. My objective on the council would be working with the finance and/or marketing teams to ensure the school s future. My career in finance provides me with the background to be an asset to the Council. Being a parent of a 1st grader, the longer term stability and success of the school is my top priority. Paul Longo: I have been in the information technology field for approximately 20 years and have supported many business areas. I have served in a variety of roles including project management and technical consulting to support software development and implementation. To support the current initiatives/objectives and engage in planning for future needs. Vince Fattore: As a former QAS student and current parishioner, I would be delighted to serve on the school because I passionately believe in the importance of education - not just for my own children, but for all! I am committed to working diligently for the needs of QAS to ensure an optimal learning experience for our children, and I would appreciate the opportunity to utilize my knowledge, experience and dedication for the benefit of QAS. 13 f tewardship Queen of All Saints Basilica Committed to Christ, sharing God's gifts, building the Church together 5th Sunday of Easter April 29, 2018 Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth. 1 JOHN 3:18 Regarding our Catholic faith, do you walk the talk? Do your actions reflect what it means to be a good disciple? Are you an active participant at Sunday Mass? Are you joyful when participating in parish ministry? Do you give gratefully and generously with your financial support to your parish and other Church needs? If not, it s not too late to start! Consider this your personal invitation to follow your heart and passions in order to be the person God created you to be. We truly believe that your involvement in any one of our many parish ministries increases your happiness and helps you grow closer to the Lord. It is a proven fact that many of our parishioners have found great joy and satisfaction by increasing their involvement in the life of Queen of All Saints Parish. We invite you to join them. Your commitment to service will make a difference for you and for our parish. This week we make special note of the generous spirit of giving of our many volunteers who are working hard to make this year s United Parish Program a success. We hope you will be able to join us on May 18 at this special event, either in person or through your other support! April 9 to 15, 2018 Sunday Stewardship Donation Type Amount Users Envelopes $15, Loose Donation $3, n/a Elect. Giving $6, Total $25, YTD Total $1,119, Our Basilica Repair Work Continues We have now completed work on replacing the ceiling above the choir loft. This required a special scaffolding as well as the disassembling of the organ itself. The organ is being reassembled and will be in full service shortly. We will soon begin repairs of some water damage around the transept windows, including replacing the caulk around the windows as well as minor repairs to some of the support rods holding the windows in place. The deteriorated marble behind the side altars has been removed and will be replaced with a modern lightweight replacement material similar to what was used in the sanctuary behind the main altar a few years ago. Currently there is a temporary substitute in place. Work on the bell tower is likely to begin later this year. Is it time to join your fellow parishioners who have already made the move to electronic giving? It s safe, convenient and dependable. Just go to the parish webpage at qasparish.org, click on the GiveCentral logo and follow the prompts. Are you receiving our monthly parish newsletter? It s a great way to keep track of the many ways we can participate in the worship ministries, social activities, and stewardship opportunities in our parish life. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament. Fifth Sunday of Easter April 29,
