2 From Father Simon: Today we enter the most sacred week in the Church s liturgical calendar. This week we celebrate the mystery of a divinely extravagant love that lies at the heart of our faith: Jesus death and resurrection. We begin today with the liturgy of Palm Sunday, when we gather together and reenact the scene of his entry into Jerusalem, riding on a donkey, to the cheers of the crowd. Today, we, the people, will shout hosanna in the liturgy of the palms, and crucify him in the reading of the passion. What is interesting in this Palm Sunday liturgy, as we listen to the story of Jesus last hours, is that we, the congregation, operate in the role of observers of Jesus actions. Our stance will change radically as we progress through the liturgies that will take place later in Holy Week. On Holy Thursday, our attention will focus on his last meal with the disciples, immediately prior to his betrayal and arrest. We will hear the story of Jesus washing the feet of the disciples. Subtly but surely, we will be invited to move from being mere observers to identifying with Jesus and to imitating him. As Jesus explains: I have washed your feet so you also ought to wash one another s feet. I have set before you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Jesus message is clear: Our sharing in the Eucharist in the Holy Thursday liturgy and in every celebration of the Eucharist is a participation in this ministry of service to each other and to the world. When we then come to Good Friday and we listen again to the account of his passion and death, we will come not as mere observers, somewhat detached from the events before us, but responding to the call to follow his way and imitate his compassion, hospitality, love and concern for others, especially for the poor and marginalized. Holy Week will culminate in the Easter Vigil Eucharist, when we will celebrate Jesus paschal mystery of new life through suffering and death, and our entry into this great mystery of life and love. We are no longer mere observers, nor even just imitators, but deeply immersed in Jesus paschal mystery. So, we are incorporated into the life and love of God, the author of this great story of love. Come and be part of the Triduum liturgies. On a different note and not wanting to distract your participation in the solemn days of the Triduum, I want to draw your attention to the invitation you received to our one and only fundraiser in the parish, the UPP. I am grateful for your support in the past and encourage and ask for your continued support to this program by sending in your RSVP, buying raffle tickets, donating items to our auction or being a sponsor. You will find information in the bulletin and on our website. Fr. Simon Braganza 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL

3 The Triduum - The Three Days The Triduum, as the word signifies, is a three day observance. Lent is the preparation for it. Easter season is the continued celebration of it. The Triduum begins Holy Thursday at sunset and concludes at sunset on Easter Sunday. The Triduum is observed by the Church with a single, three-daylong liturgy. The services held are simply different phases of one celebration a celebration of our faith. We should experience the flow of the Three Days as a continuous thread. We find the God of Salvation in the flow. The Church celebrates with song, with shared prayer, with ritual action, and with shared silence. What makes it a celebration is the truth that we are already saved by the actions of our Redeemer. The various parts of the Triduum are not reenactments of events long past but are a participation in the ongoing celebration of who we are as Church in the salvation process. The Triduum is filled with meaningful, moving and beautiful rituals, gestures, prayers and hymns. Participate in the Triduum and remember that which is our faith, celebrate that faith with your family, friends and community, and believe in the good news of salvation. We remember, we celebrate, we believe. Holy Thursday, April 13 Mass of the Lord s Supper, 7:30 pm The Triduum begins with the gathering of the community for the Mass of the Lord s Supper. We gather to be part of something that transcends differences and unites us in a way that transforms us into the Body of Christ. We begin with the Reception of the Holy Oils, blessed and consecrated at Holy Name Cathedral. This small ceremony indicates our bond with our Bishop, our unity with other parishes in the archdiocese, and our oneness with the Church universal. We are a sacramental people and find richness in the rituals within which these oils are used. We call to mind Christ s command to us to love and serve one another in the beautiful gesture of the Washing of Feet. We break bread and share wine in The Liturgy of the Eucharist. The gift of Jesus shared intimacy is a cause for joy shared in the midst of a loving community. At the close of this part of The Triduum, we walk in Solemn Procession to Venerate the Real Presence among us. There is no dismissal. The Triduum liturgy continues tomorrow. The church will remain open until midnight for prayer and reflection. Good Friday, April 14 The Passion of the Lord, 7:30 pm We walk into a barren, empty church. We hear the story of the passion and death of Jesus Christ in The Liturgy of the Word. This is the passion of every Christian. We are reminded of the foolishness of a life outside of intimate relationship with Jesus, and we pray for ourselves, our neighbors and all God s children. In The Veneration of the Cross, we pray before the Cross not as a symbol of suffering and shame; instead, we glory in the cross on which hung our salvation. It is by the cross that we are saved. Stations of the Cross will be observed at 3:00 pm. Today is a day of fast and abstinence. Holy Saturday, April 15 Easter Vigil, 7:30 pm This night we relive the fullness of our redemption. We will gather on the field at 7:30 for the Service of Light. We light the new fire. The light blazing forth is the light of Christ s saving love. With the Paschal candle leading, we hold a candle procession into the Basilica, carrying the light of Christ into our place of worship. We listen to scripture proclaimed and sing psalms, telling the history of our salvation in The Liturgy of the Word. In The Liturgy of Baptism, we rejoice as the catechumens and elect are called forward. The assembly prays over them. They are baptized, confirmed and received into full communion with our church. The assembly, now open to a life in Christ, celebrates the reality of God-with-us in the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord April 9,

11 f tewardship Palm Sunday April 9, 2017 Queen of All Saints Basilica Committed to Christ, sharing God's gifts, building the Church together Stewardship - Be a good steward of the Lenten Season The Lenten season prepares us for the celebration of Easter. It is a time for Christians to embrace prayer, fasting, and almsgiving in a more concerted way. For some it is a time of healing, an opportunity to repair their spiritual brokenness. For others it is simply a good time to cultivate their spiritual lives in a more disciplined manner. The goal of Lenten practices: to prepare ourselves to enter into the paschal mystery of Holy Week with a more humble spirit and determination to follow Jesus Christ. This ancient triad of prayer, fasting and almsgiving offers wonderful spiritual benefits. Being a good steward of these gifts by planning ahead and following through is essential to having a fruitful Lenten experience. This week let s consider almsgiving: This spiritual discipline heightens our sense of generosity. Just as an increase in prayer and fasting leads us to be more grateful for the gifts we ve received, and promotes a greater awareness of others, almsgiving helps us to reach out to others in gratitude. Just as we don t squeeze in time to pray during Lent, we also don t scrutinize our checkbook when being generous with others. Again, make a plan and let a meaningful sense of sacrifice be your guide. As they were marching out, they came upon a man of Cyrene, Simon by name; this man they pressed into service to carry his cross. - MATTHEW 27:32 The Lord calls us to love God and to love our neighbor. Every day we are presented with opportunities to love our neighbor and help him carry his cross. These opportunities aren t usually big events, they are usually ordinary occurrences like helping someone carry their groceries or holding the door open for them. The key is putting the other person s needs before our own and not expecting anything in return. Please consider what we can give back to our parish, in our time, our talent, and our treasure, in response to the great gifts God has given us. Please remember our parish this Easter Our Easter collection is one of our two major annual Holy Day collections to support our parish. We depend on the support of our parishioners throughout the year to fund our total operating budget. This includes the maintenance of the beautiful Basilica where you received this bulletin, and all our parish ministries that support each and every one of us at all stages of our lives. Our parish is our family in faith, and like any good family we are called to be present for each other. We support each other in our shared worship, in our shared prayers, and in our shared experiences. No matter our circumstances our giving to others truly is a shared message of hope in the Risen Lord this Easter. Thank you for all you do for our parish! Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament. Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord April 9,
