2 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL From the Pastor Ready or not the days of Christmas are upon us. It s already the 3 rd Sunday of Advent, Gaudete Sunday. To begin this time of prayer and festival mindful of all the blessings we have received gives us joy and guards against some of the traps that the material world sets before us, particularly at this time of the year. A mindset of thankfulness, gratitude and appreciation is a great foundation on which to build a balanced and healthy celebration of the Christmas season. Gratitude grows when we emphasize all the good things we have rather than dwelling on those we don t have. Gratitude also deepens when we commit ourselves to a life of sharing what we do have. It is within this context that I ask each family in Queen of All Saints Parish to take some time during the busy final days of Advent to reflect on the many gifts God has given us, and to make a carefully considered decision about what, in turn, you would like to offer to Queen of All Saints Parish as your Christmas gift. I ask you to be as generous as you are able to be in your offering to the Basilica this Christmas. The improvements to the interior of the Basilica were unexpected and very costly, and we must replenish our savings. I am confident that we will do so because the people of this wonderful parish have always been most generous when the parish was in need. I have two ideas that might be helpful to a portion of our parishioners. First, if you are 70½ or older and have an IRA, you may qualify for a charitable giving opportunity directly from your IRA. Individuals are allowed to make direct transfers from an IRA to Queen of All Saints tax free up to $100,000. The tax free nature of this withdrawal may have a number of other favorable benefits affecting your tax return, depending on your particular situation. Please contact our parish business office at for further information. And second, I want to make a special request of those whose investments have appreciated in an especially robust stock market over this past year. You might also consider whether it makes sense in your situation to liquidate some stocks or mutual fund shares to lock in long-term gains and dedicate a portion of your proceeds after taxes to Queen of All Saints. Additionally, there is another potentially even more valuable alternative where you can directly transfer appreciated securities to Queens without paying any capital gains tax, thereby increasing your gift to our parish and your own tax deduction for a charitable contribution. Again, please contact our parish business office for information on this latter alternative. Of course, these tax-related benefits to our donors are strictly secondary to other, more profound benefits as well. If our parishioners took advantage of these opportunities and made a gift to Queens, they would have a deep sense of satisfaction that they have touched the future. They would have contributed significantly to ensuring that this great parish with such a proud past also has a bright horizon and a secure future. They would have given to the next generations of faithful Catholic people including their own children and grandchildren what they received from their parents and grandparents. When we reach a certain age, such considerations mean more than they did when we were younger, more than it is possible to put into words. I am happy to say that several parishioners have taken advantage of similar opportunities in the past. When we look around, we have so much for which to be grateful. We have our lives, our families, our faith and our parish. We have so many reasons on this Gaudete Sunday to Rejoice. God bless you. Monsignor John Pollard

7 f tewardship Queen of All Saints Basilica Committed to Christ, sharing God's gifts, building the Church together Third Sunday of Advent December 17, 2017 Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you - 1 THESSALONIANS 5:16-18 This scripture reading sums up Stewardship. Rejoice always means place your trust in God; He will provide all that you need. Pray constantly means prayer should be a running conversation with God throughout the whole day, every day. Give thanks in all circumstances means even in bad situations, thank God. Suffering a little bit helps build empathy for others in similar situations. Stewardship on Gaudete Sunday A Day of Joy Stewardship is, of course, based upon an attitude of gratitude and today is a day to focus on the joy that results from that gratitude. Father Henri Nouwen was a well known Catholic priest, professor, writer, and theologian. In describing the significance of this particular day, Father Nouwen clarified the difference between joy and happiness. He said, While happiness is dependent upon external conditions, joy is the experience of knowing that we are unconditionally loved by God and nothing not sickness, failure, emotional distress, oppression, war, or even death can take that love away. Joy can be present in the midst of sadness. This joy that is reflected in lives of stewardship was also emphasized by Pope Francis, who said in his homily for Gaudete Sunday in 2014, Today is a day of joy. Rather than fretting about all we have not done or accomplished to prepare for Christmas during Advent, we need to think of all the good things God, and life, has given us. Our Christmas collection is our largest special collection of the year. Please keep in mind the many ministries, liturgies, and activities that touch us throughout the year as you decide on your gift to our parish this Christmas. The Season of Advent: A Fruitful Time for the Christian Steward Probably nothing challenges a Christian steward s use of time as much as the seasons of Advent and Christmas. Each year, we marvel at the irony of it: a time to honor and ponder God s great mystery, the Incarnation, somehow falls prey to a time of stressful shopping, endless to do lists, strained checkbooks, and guilt over what s not getting done. Sometimes those non-stop Christmas tunes begin to grate on our senses. How does the Christian steward answer this challenge to devote time to reflection and prayer while incorporating the best and most fruitful of our cultural traditions into this festive season? I just don t have time, is the frequent lament of the holiday season. But the Christian steward is aware that we all have the same amount of time, and to each is given an opportunity of returning the first fruits of that time back to God. The season of Advent offers just such a grace-filled opportunity. Dec 1st to 5th, 2017 Sunday Stewardship Donation Type Amount Users Envelopes $23, Loose Donation $5, n/a Elect. Giving $6, Total $35, YTD Total $614, Please consider what we can give back to our parish, in our time, our talent, and our treasure, in response to the great gifts God has given us. In switching on the light of the Nativity scene, we wish for the light of Christ to be in us. A Christmas without light is not Christmas. Let there be light in the soul, in the heart; let there be forgiveness to others; let there be no hostilities, which are dark. Let there be the beautiful light of Jesus. This is my wish for all of you, when you turn on the light of the crib. If you are a registered parishioner, please come into the rectory during business hours to schedule your child's baptism. If it is not possible for you to come into the rectory, please call the rectory to make arrangements. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated two or three Sundays of the month, depending on the time of year, at 1:30 PM - call the rectory for the exact schedule. A Baptismal Preparation class for the parents is required. They are held once a month and must also be scheduled in advance. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests. The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament. Third Sunday of Advent December 17,
