1 MARCH 10, 2013 FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT Queen of All Saints Basilica Committed to Christ, sharing God s gifts and building the Church together through the ministries of word, worship and service. Mass Schedule Saturday 5:00 pm Sunday 6:45, 8:00, 9:30, 11:00 am 12:30 pm Daily Mass Monday-Friday 6:30, 7:30, 8:45 am Saturday 8:00 am Confessions Saturday at 8:30-9:15 am Perpetual Novena Monday at 7:00pm Dear Brothers and Sisters, After the great Pope John Paul II, the Cardinals have elected me, a simple and humble laborer in the vineyard of the Lord. The fact that the Lord knows how to work and to act even with inadequate instruments comforts me, and above all I entrust myself to your prayers. Let us move forward in the joy of the Risen Lord, confident of his unfailing help. The Lord will help us and Mary, his Most Holy Mother, will be on our side. Thank you. ~Pope Benedict XVI April 19th, N. Sauganash Avenue Chicago, Illinois Phone: Fax:

2 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL From the Pastor Eight years ago I had the privilege of being at the Vatican during the conclave that elected Pope Benedict XVI. Luckily I was in St. Peter s Square along with thousands of others on the late afternoon of April 19, 2005 when the white smoke wafted from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel announcing his election to the Church and the world. I remained in the Square, of course, to witness his first appearance about thirty minutes later on the central loggia balcony and to receive his first blessing as the successor of St. Peter. On those days from April 12 19, 2005, I wrote two articles for publication in the Sunday bulletin of St. Joseph Parish, where I was then pastor. As a small way of honoring the papacy of Pope Benedict XVI, I would like the people of Queen of All Saints Basilica to know what I felt and wrote back then. Last week s bulletin reprinted my article from April 17, 2005 on the conclave. This week s bulletin will reprint my article from April 24, 2005 on the election of Pope Benedict XVI. And the following week I will write a brief personal memoir of him. It was interesting for me to re-read what I wrote eight years ago. I hope it will be for you as well. *** It s almost seven on a cloudy evening in Rome, the 19 th of April, 2005, and I have just returned to my room after having received the first blessing of our new pope, Benedict XVI, along with the tens of thousands of others gathered in Saint Peter s Square for the historic event. As it happens, my host in Rome and dear friend for many years, Father Augustin DiNoia, is currently the under secretary in the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the office that, up until a few minutes ago, was headed by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger. So I was standing in Saint Peter s Square with Father DiNoia and all his colleagues in the Congregation when it was announced that their boss had been elected the 265 th successor of Saint Peter. Needless to say they exploded with joy, and I along with them, when they heard Cardinal Medina unmistakably proclaim, Josephum Cardinalem Ratzinger, as our new pope. Words simply cannot describe the experience. But I m getting a little ahead of myself. At 5:30 this afternoon I walked the hundred or so yards from my room into Saint Peter s Square thinking that, if the Cardinal electors had selected a new pope on their fourth ballot, their paper ballots would be burned and smoke would pour out of the chimney of the Sistine Chapel. The smoke could be any color, I thought, because, if they hadn t chosen a new pope on the fourth ballot, their paper ballots would be kept for burning until after the fifth ballot which would be held around six o clock. It was highly unlikely, in my view, that they would elect a new pope so quickly. But I was wrong. Precisely at ten minutes to six, just as I was saying that it seemed their fourth ballot was inconclusive, smoke began rising from the chimney, at first just brief puffs whose color was impossible to determine. A great cheer of anticipation rose up in the crowd. People all around me were saying in many different languages, Is it white or black? Against the cloudy sky the smoke first looked black, then grey, then black again. Bianca o nera, they cried, Blanche o noir, Black or white. But it didn t matter what the color of the smoke seemed to be because any color smoke coming from the chimney at that particular time, in the middle of their evening ballot, meant that the Cardinals had elected a pope. People began rushing into Saint Peter s Square from everywhere. The excitement was electric, like nothing I had ever experienced before. As the Square was filling the fact that an election had taken place was confirmed when the great bells of Saint Peter s Basilica started to ring joyfully. I could not help but think that, just a few days before, the bells of Saint Joseph Church had been slowly and mournfully tolling to announce the death of Pope John Paul II. Great cheers rose up again from the crowd, so loud that the sound of the bells was drowned out. But we could see them swinging back and forth and knew that the Church and the world had a new pope. But who was it?

3 Long white sheer drapes backed by red velvet ones conceal the great windows which open on to the central loggia of Saint Peter s Basilica from which the new pope s name is announced, from where he is presented to the people and from where he gives his first blessing Urbi et orbi, to the city and the world. Someone behind those drapes ruffled them for a moment and the crowd erupted in applause. But it was a false alarm. It would be some forty minutes until the drapes were parted and Cardinal Medina, the senior Cardinal, would walk out onto the loggia and announce to the world, Habemus papam, We have a pope. When he did, the crowd again broke out with cheers and applause. When he proclaimed that the name of the new pope was Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, a man had spoken with the previous day, the crowds, which by this time numbered in the tens of thousands and spilled all the way down the via Conciliazione to the Tiber River, went wild. Arms instinctively were raised, flags waved and tears ran down the faces of many around me. There were small children on the shoulders of their fathers, young people with stuffed backpacks, religious sisters of every order and priests of all ages joined for this unforgettable historic event. Cardinal Medina then announced that the new pope had chosen the name Benedict XVI. Again the cheers went up. Saint Benedict was the great evangelizer of Western Europe and his monks and their rule were responsible for the extension and endurance of Christian civilization for over a thousand years. In choosing that name, the new pope is certainly giving a clear signal of the early direction of his papacy. When Pope Benedict XVI came out onto the loggia, the crowd s enthusiasm was complete. He raised his arms high into the air in a warm and joyous gesture. His face beamed with a wide and peaceful smile. He said, The Cardinals have elected a simple, humble laborer in the vineyard of the Lord as your pope. He asked for the intercession of the Blessed Mother and the prayers of people all over the world. After a few more minutes of waves and warm smiles, Pope Benedict XVI reentered Saint Peter s Basilica and disappeared behind the long red drapes. Viva il Papa! God bless him. Father John Pollard Where? When? What? Who? Why? Vatican II: 50 Years Later Presentations by Fr. George Kane NOTE CHANGE OF VENUE. Lower level of the Benedict Center. 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. the following Thursdays: March 14 th, March 21 st, April 4 th, April 11th Vatican II was a major historical moment in the life of the church. Some of us may remember the changes in the liturgy that occurred during those years, from the change in Eucharistic fasting rules, to celebrating the Mass in the vernacular or English in the United States, to turning the altar to face the congregation. The council inaugurated a new era in the church. In 1972, Fr. George Kane was the founding Pastor of Church of the Holy Spirit in Schaumburg and served there as pastor until Now as Pastor Emeritus, Fr. George has given numerous missions and sessions on the Second Vatican Council. He is known for his compassionate outreach, dynamic homilies, and witty, hope-filled vision of life. This series on Vatican II is very timely, since on October 11, 2012 we marked the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council under Pope John XXIII, who designated Queen of All Saints as a Basilica, March 26, Understanding our past helps us understand the future. 8 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is the UPP? UPP stands for the United Parish Program. It has been the Queen of All Saints fundraiser for over 30 years and has undergone several changes over time. Currently the UPP is our one-night celebration in the tent. It includes dinner, dancing, auction, raffle and a chance to socialize with friends. We hope you will join us for A Starry Night. Why should I participate? This is you parishes ONE & ONLY parish fundraiser. No Friday night fish fries, no spaghetti dinners, no candies or gift wrap for your child to sell just a one-night package of serious fundraising. What are the goals of the UPP? The goals of the UPP are to support the ministries of the parish, to help fund improvements to the parish and to build the parish into a community of faith. The UPP goal last year was $275,000. Through everyone s incredible generosity, we raised over $300,000. This year s goal is $275,000 and with your help we can once again exceed our goal! Where do your dollars go? The operating budget includes the maintenance and repair of our 15 acre campus and its 5 beautiful buildings. The operating budget includes all we need to worship in our Basilica. Our parish invests 25% of all its ordinary income (including the UPP) in the education of 1200 children in our school and religious education program. The UPP also helps support our 40 ministries such as Bereavement Support Group, Elizabeth Ministry, Homebound Ministry etc. How can my family contribute? It is critical for every parish family to financially participate in the UPP at some level. The fundamental key to QAS financial success is the UPP raffle. We are asking every parish family to buy or sell $250 of raffle tickets. Each ticket is $50 or 6 for $250. Of course, we appreciate any contribution. Parish sponsorships at various levels are another way to contribute to the UPP. Advertising space in the UPP Program Book handed out on the night of the event is a great way to reach a large audience about your business. Families can buy ads to be included in the UPP Program Book. You can include family photos with a special message congratulating or acknowledging milestones like 1 St Communion or 8 th grade graduation. Support Children s Art Projects by being a benefactor. And, of course, there is an exciting Live and Silent Auction on the night of the event! Over the coming weeks you will learn more about these opportunities to contribute to the success of the UPP. With your help A Starry Night will be an evening to remember. 8 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL
