2 From the Pastor Progress on the repair and restoration of the Basilica ceiling continues to move forward. That progress is being managed and monitored by the Construction Committee chaired by Father Simon and comprised of representatives of Diprato-Rigali Studios (design and fabrication), Wiss Janney Elstner Associates (structural engineering) and the Archdiocese of Chicago Office of Building and Construction (oversight). In addition we are working with an acoustical consultant and a lighting designer. Also in attendance at our bi-weekly meetings are Jerry Farrell, our business manager, Ken Sotak, our music director, and myself. The purpose of this group is to keep the sprawling project on time and on budget. They seem to me to be a very effective, action-oriented group. During my latest visit to the platform high above the nave of the Basilica, I was able to see the progress that has been made on the replacement of the acoustical tiles in the first bay of the ceiling, that section of the ceiling closest to the choir loft. The difference between the new panels that are being installed where the old tiles were is truly remarkable. After the acoustical tiles and old insulation are removed, the wooden roof is completely examined. Then the new, air-tight insulation is installed. The new aluminum panels have been fabricated off-site and backed with foam glass for additional insulation. Each panel is 9 feet by 3 feet and weighs 65 pounds. Each one replaces 27 acoustical tiles, like the ones that fell. The panels are primed, painted, stenciled with black and white borders and decorated with the heavenly stars by very skilled artisans in the workshop high above the floor. When they dry, the panels are painstakingly installed and carefully secured between the ribs of the Basilica s arches. Sometimes this means shaving an edge or two of a particular panel because the spaces for which they are destined are not all exactly uniform. As one might suspect, as the arch rises, there is sometimes a slight tapering effect which has to be reflected in the proportions of the new panel. It s almost mind-boggling to think that in the nave and sanctuary of the Basilica there are 374 panels that have to be fabricated, decorated and installed using this process. The end result will be a brilliant vision of celestial stars that lead our hearts, minds and souls upwards toward the throne of God. This celestial ceiling will be illuminated by newly cleaned chandeliers and light fixtures and by more powerful, long-lasting bulbs designed to diffuse the light upward, outward and below. Great care is being taken to test the lighting design and its implementation in the Basilica. We are aiming for increased brightness throughout the Basilica, but also for a generally softer, warmer light as well. We will have to experiment with several scenarios for the lighting once the scaffold has been removed. While we re at it, we intend to improve the sound capacities in the Basilica as well. That s why we are relying on the professionalism of an acoustical consultant and the expertise of our own music director to ensure that the acoustic in the Basilica for the spoken voice, for congregational singing as well as for music performance is enhanced. As you can see, this is highly technical and somewhat experimental work. But it s all for one purpose: the greater honor and glory of God. Please keep this adventurous initiative in your prayers. God bless you. Monsignor John Pollard 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL
3 Summer Mission Appeal - This Weekend We will be joined this weekend by Sr. Kathy Brazda, CSJ, Anna Mayer, and Mitchell Roemer of Taller de José (Joseph s Workshop) as a part of the Archdiocese of Chicago Mission Office, Mission Appeal. Taller de José is a great example of mission at home. Our faith teaches us that at baptism we are all called to continue the mission of Christ. In this way we are all missionaries even in our own homes. Mission is about more than traveling to faraway lands, it s about building the Kingdom of God. Taller de José is an organization that builds the Kingdom in a profound way, through accompaniment. Taller de José is a community resource center, located in Chicago s Little Village community, which offers accompaniment to people in need, connecting people to services and services to people. Sponsored by the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Taller de José exists to fulfill the mission of Jesus, that all may be one. Taller de José offers companionship and personal attention to our underserved neighbors to assist them in navigating the social service system and linking them to the resources and services needed. The accompaniment ministry provided by Taller de José is more than sitting in an office, listening to people relate their stories, or making a few phone calls. Accompaniment takes place beyond the office as staff accompanies clients by public transportation standing in line, waiting in courts, health care facilities, government offices and social service agencies. When accompanying a client, Taller de José is a supportive presence, walking and journeying with them, offering information, direction, advocacy, emotional support and insight. Taller de José does not duplicate already existing services in the ecclesial and civic communities of Chicago but partners with them to help to alleviate human sufferings caused by, but not limited to, hunger, domestic abuse, legal problems, homelessness, sickness, and violence. In its first year of operation, 2008, Taller de José served 150 people. Today, Taller de José serves over 1,000 people every year, going on almost 700 off-site accompaniments to court, hospitals, social service agencies, police stations and more. For more information visit our website at We invite you and your family to accompany Taller de José by giving generously so that this ministry of accompaniment may continue to serve those most in need. 4 Religious Education News In our gospel reading this week, we see the disciples awestruck and afraid. Their Lord, teacher, and friend has begun to shine like the sun. This would be striking to anyone who would have encountered Jesus. On top of their friend s transfiguration, Moses and Elijah, two of the most important prophets, have appeared on the scene. Their friend is calmly conversing with both men. Lastly, God appears in a cloud and begins to speak not to Jesus but to them. The disciples were afraid; let s face it, they were probably terrified. God speaks to the disciples and states that they should listen to his beloved son. Jesus looks to his disciples, his friends, and the first thing he tells them is to not be afraid. It is amazing to imagine that in this moment Jesus is connecting the earth to the divine, the past to the present, and in all of this he states that they should not be afraid. In those moments of transfiguration, we should not be afraid. In those truly shaking moments, we should not be afraid. Even when are in the presence of God we should not be afraid. The religious education department is in need of catechists for Sunday mornings and Tuesday evenings. I ask each of you to prayerfully consider becoming a catechist this year and help our parish children grow in their faith. Lastly, a reminder that the religious education registration deadline for the year is August 15th. 9 f tewardship Queen of All Saints Basilica Committed to Christ, sharing God's gifts, building the Church together The Transfiguration of the Lord August 6, 2017 Stewardship of Our Resources The Basilica Ceiling We sit in our pews during Mass and look upward to see scaffolding over 50 feet up in the air and wonder what it looks like above. Here s a close-up look at the ceiling after the tiles were removed. The craftsmanship of the ceiling is remarkable, all the more reason to take careful steps to fix the ceiling properly, as stewards of the parish resources which have been so generously entrusted to us by those who came before us. And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. - MATTHEW 17:2 Just as the moon reflects the light of the sun, we should reflect Christ s light to the world. When we receive the Eucharist, the body and blood of Jesus, we are called to be supernatural to reflect His love, mercy and forgiveness to others. When we are grateful for all that God has given us, generosity flows through us because we are made in God s image. July 17th to 23rd, 2017 Sunday Stewardship Donation Type Amount Users Envelopes $14, Loose Donation $3, n/a Elect. Giving $5, Total $23, YTD Total $102, Please consider what we can give back to our parish, in our time, our talent, and our treasure, in response to the great gifts God has given us. Is it time to reconsider our level of support? We don t have to look around very far to see the effects of the very untimely need to replace our Basilica ceiling. Even though we are in the fortunate position to be able to front the costs of this capital project from our reserves, we will need to ask our parishioners to consider an increase in their Sunday offering to replenish our reserves in full for the project, which is on top of our already successful capital campaign To Teach Who Christ Is: From Generation to Generation. We anticipate a more formal campaign to focus on our regular Sunday collections in the fall, but wanted everyone to be aware about this now, and to begin to prayerfully consider this matter. Throughout the wonderful history of our parish there has been an uninterrupted series of very positive responses to calls for support. We know that the challenges we face today will be met with the same success that our predecessors in this parish achieved! Thank you for all you do for our parish and please know that you are always welcome here! Consider Give Central For safe and convenient handing of your valued generosity to our parish Go to our parish website at qasparish.org, click on the Give Central logo and follow the prompts. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed.
