2 The Triduum The Three Days The Triduum, as the word signifies, is a three day observance. Lent is the preparation for it. Easter season is the continued celebration of it. The Triduum begins Holy Thursday at sunset and concludes at sunset on Easter Sunday. The Triduum is observed by the church with a single, three-day-long liturgy. The services held are simply different phases of one celebration a celebration of our faith. We should experience the flow of the Three Days as a continuous thread. We find the God of Salvation in the flow. The church celebrates with song, with shared prayer, with ritual action, and with shared silence. What makes it a celebration is the truth that we are already saved by the actions of our Redeemer. The various parts of the Triduum are not reenactments of events long past but are participation in the ongoing celebration of who we are as church in the salvation process. The Triduum is filled with meaningful, moving and beautiful rituals, gestures, prayers and hymns. Participate in the Triduum and remember that which is our faith, celebrate that faith with your family, friends and community, and believe in the good news of salvation. We remember, we celebrate, we believe. Holy Thursday, April 21 Mass of the Lord s Supper, 7:30 pm The Triduum begins with the gathering of the community for the Mass of the Lord s Supper. We gather to be part of something that transcends differences and unites us in a way that transforms us into the Body of Christ. We begin with the Reception of the Holy Oils, blessed and consecrated at Holy Name Cathedral. This small ceremony indicates our bond with our Bishop, our unity with other parishes in the archdiocese, and our oneness with the church universal. We are a sacramental people and find richness in the rituals within which these oils are used. We call to mind Christ s command to us to love and serve one another in the beautiful gesture of the Washing of Feet. We break bread and share wine in The Liturgy of the Eucharist. The gift of Jesus shared intimacy is a cause for joy shared in the midst of a loving community. At the close of this part of The Triduum, we walk in Solemn Procession to Venerate the Real Presence among us. There is no dismissal. The Triduum liturgy continues tomorrow. The church will remain open until midnight for prayer and reflection. Good Friday, April 22 The Passion of the Lord, 7:30 pm We walk into a barren, empty church. We hear the story of the passion and death of Jesus Christ in The Liturgy of the Word. This is the passion of every Christian. We are reminded of the foolishness of a life outside of intimate relationship with Jesus, and we pray for ourselves, our neighbors and all God s children. In The Veneration of the Cross, we pray before the Cross not as a symbol of suffering and shame; instead, we glory in the cross on which hung our salvation. It is by the cross that we are saved. The church will remain open until midnight. Traditional Stations of the Cross will be observed at 3:00 pm followed by the Divine Mercy Chaplet on Good Friday. Today is a day of fast and abstinence. Holy Saturday, April 23 Easter Vigil, 8:45 pm This night we relive the fullness of our redemption. We will gather on the field at 8:45 for the Service of Light. We light the new fire. The light blazing forth is the light of Christ s saving love. With the Paschal candle leading, we hold a candle procession into the Basilica, carrying the light of Christ into our place of worship. We listen to scripture proclaimed and sing psalms, telling the history of our salvation in The Liturgy of the Word. In The Liturgy of Baptism, we rejoice as the catechumens and elect are called forward. The assembly prays over them. They are baptized, confirmed and received into full communion with our church. The assembly, now open to a life in Christ, celebrates the reality of God-with-us in the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The Divine Mercy chaplet is prayed beginning at 7:00 pm. April 17,

3 THANK YOU The death of my sister has been an enormous loss for me. After her valiant fight with cancer and complications for seven years, acute leukemia suddenly took her. Now she is at rest in the loving mercy of Our Lord. Thank God for our faith. I want to thank all of you who alleviated our grief by visiting the wake, attending the funeral, sending flowers, giving Mass cards, sending cards of condolence, speaking kind words, embracing us gently, and donating to her various causes. I cannot thank you enough.. Monsignor Prist Pamela A. Collier April 17,

4 ST. VINCENT depaul SOCIETY QUEEN OF ALL SAINTS BASILICA ARE YOU HUNGRY AND THIRSTY TO SERVE GOD S PEOPLE? The Saint Vincent de Paul Society of QAS is having an open meeting on April 13, 2011 beginning at 7:00 in the Teachers lounge, which is a t the south entrance of the Lemont Avenue School, on the lower level. We would like to invite any parishioners interested in learning about the activities of the Society and how they could assist in our efforts to help those in need. At this meeting we will have speakers from Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Glenview who will discuss their plans for a non-for-profit organization to provide services for anyone in need. Referrals will come from local communities and Churches. Some of the services they are going to have available include legal, dental, job search and preparation, food, clothing, and many others. 7 Congratulations to Queen of All Saints Eighth Grade girls volleyball team! It was standing room only in the gym as the girls triumphed over a powerful IC team in two games. The crowd even helped cheer the girls on with performing the ever popular "wave". The QAS girls ended their season with a record of 13-2 and won both the IC and Resurrection tournaments. Coach Jamie Vanecko was instrumental in preparing the girls for their successful season. "They are one of the most talented and respectful group of girls I have ever coached; they even thanked me after each practice! I truly enjoyed being a part of their volleyball experience," explained Jamie. Thanks to Coach Vanecko and the skilled team of girls for an exciting season. We are proud to add the playoff banner in the school gym! Go Saints! The winner of our first EARLY BIRD drawing for the UPP is Michael Lovallo The drawing took place on April 8 at 12:12 P.M. 8 The Word Feeding Justice Reflections on the Sunday Lectionary April 17, 2011: Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion Catholic Social Teaching: Life and Dignity of the Human Person Psalm: 22 Second Reading: Philippians 2:6-11 Gospel: Matthew 26:14-27:66 First Reading: Isaiah 50:4-7 We ve journeyed through Lent to Holy Week. Lent is a procession that guides us on a journey of prayer, fasting and commitment to reach our hands into the world. Morning after morning have we allowed God to open our ears to listen to the person standing at the end of the freeway off ramp on our way to work, not as a beggar or a bum, but a human being needing compassion. Are they there because they lacked education to participate in a tech savvy world? Did they drop out of school to support younger siblings while growing up? Are they one in four homeless Americans that are veterans? Do they suffer from addictions, but lack the resources to seek treatment? Are they an immigrant exploited and discriminated against by unjust regulations separating families and boarders constructed of paper? The persons standing at the end of the freeway off ramp are our brothers and sisters. They have suffered, as Jesus suffered. They have been betrayed by society, as Jesus was betrayed. They have been denied economic participation three times or more. People flee their presence. They have suffered in agony through cold homeless nights, while others are found asleep in warm abodes. Arrested and questioned for resting on a park bench, they remain silent for they have no crime to answer to. And they may die a death yearning to know why society had forsaken them. But truly, they are children of God. Individual reflection: Matthew 26:14-27:66 Get business cards of a local program that assists homeless people find housing and jobs. Keep some in your car so can offer these resources to help affirm their human dignity. Family reflection: 50:4-7 Have the children use their allowance one week to buy math and reading workbooks to donate for use by an after school-tutoring program in your community. Have a discussion about people that may lack educational opportunities or have to work to support themselves and their families instead of going to school. April 17,

9 Reasons to attend the United Parish Program on May 13, 2011 We have always enjoyed seeing the old and new faces at the UPP party. We remember when the party consisted of picnic tables and coolers in the gym... Oh how times have changed! Phil and Maureen Barone We look forward to going to the UPP because it gives us the opportunity to reacquaint with old friends as well as mingle with new ones, as we enjoy a wonderful evening of great food, music, and dancing so close to home. There is a heartwarming sense of community in the air that makes the evening so worthwhile. Patsy and Mike Nick We enjoy attending the UPP to enjoy the company of parishioners from every age group. We bump into neighbors that we have not seen in months. There is a great feeling of community and faith. Stacey and Mark Kucharis April 17,
